| Saying all that, I still give it a high ranking. For the price, it is a great value. For the digitally challenged, simple rehearsal of turning it on. This camera is for those who place design and functionality side by side, and for snap shooters. | |

To users of this camera Do not use or store this device in the vicinity of equipment that generates strong electromagnetic radiation or magnetic fields. Strong static charges or the magnetic fields produced by equipment such as radio transmitters could interfere with the monitor, damage the stored data, or affect the product's internal circuitry and cause camera misoperation. The liquid crystal panel used in the display is manufactured using extremely high precision technology. Although the level of functioning pixels is 99.99% or better, you should be aware that 0.01% or fewer of the pixels may not illuminate or may illuminate when they should not. However, this has no effect on the recorded image. If you point the camera toward an object that is bright, a band of light may appear on the screen display. This phenomenon is referred to as smear and is not a malfunction of the camera. There is a possibility that the illustrations and the display screen in this manual are different from the actual product. In this manual, both an SD Memory Card and an SDHC Memory Card are referred to as SD Memory Cards hereafter. In this manual, the generic term computer(s) refers to either a Windows PC or a Macintosh hereafter. USING YOUR CAMERA SAFELY
We have paid close attention to the safety of this product. When using this product, we request your special attention regarding items marked with the following symbols. Warning This symbol indicates that violating this item could cause serious personal injuries. Caution This symbol indicates that violating this item could cause minor or medium personal injuries, or material losses.
About the Camera Warning
Do not disassemble or modify the camera. High voltage areas are present inside the camera, with the risk of electric shock.
If the camera interior is exposed due to dropping or otherwise damaging the camera, never touch the exposed portion. There is a risk of electric shock. Wrapping the strap around your neck is dangerous. Take care that small children do not hang the strap around their necks. If any irregularities occur during use, such as smoke or a strange odor, stop use immediately, remove the battery or the AC adapter, and contact your nearest PENTAX Service Center. Continuing to use the product can cause a fire or electric shock.
Caution
Do not place your finger over the flash when discharging the flash. You may burn yourself. Do not cover the flash with clothing when discharging the flash. Discoloration may occur. Some portions of the camera heat up during use. There is a risk of low temperature burns when holding such portions for long periods. Should the monitor be damaged, be careful of glass fragments. Also, be careful not to allow the liquid crystal to get on your skin, in your eyes or mouth. Depending on your individual factors or physical condition, the use of the camera may cause itching, rashes or blisters. In case of any abnormality, stop using the camera and get medical attention immediately.
About the Battery Charger and the AC Adapter Warning
Always use the battery charger and AC adapter exclusively developed for this product, with the specified power and voltage. Using a battery charger or AC adapter not exclusive to this product, or using the exclusive battery charger or AC adapter with an unspecified power or voltage can cause a fire, electric shock, or camera breakdown. The specified voltage is 100 240V AC. Do not disassemble or modify the product. This can cause a fire or electric shock. If the generation of smoke or strange odor from the product or other abnormality occurs, immediately discontinue use and consult a PENTAX Service Center. Continuing to use the product can cause a fire or electric shock.
If water should happen to get inside the product, consult a PENTAX Service Center. Continuing to use the product can cause a fire or electric shock. If a thunder storm should occur while using the battery charger and AC plug cord, unplug the AC plug cord and discontinue use. Continuing to use the product can cause damage to the equipment, fire, or electric shock. Wipe off the plug of the AC plug cord if it becomes covered with dust. Dust on the plug may cause a fire.
Care to be Taken During Handling
Before Using Your Camera
When traveling, take the Worldwide Service Network listing that is included in the package. This will be useful if you experience problems abroad. When the camera has not been used for a long time, confirm that it is still working properly, particularly prior to taking important pictures (such as at a wedding or when traveling). Pictures and sounds cannot be guaranteed if recording, playback or transferring your data to a computer, etc. is not possible due to a malfunction of your camera or recording media (SD Memory Card), etc.
About the Battery and Charger
Storing the battery fully charged may decrease the battery performance. Avoid storing in high temperatures. If the battery is left inserted and the camera is not used for a long time, the battery will over-discharge and shorten the batterys usage span. Charging the battery a day before use or on the day of use is recommended. The AC plug cord provided with this camera is developed exclusively for the battery charger D-BC106. Do not use it with other devices.
Precautions on Carrying and Using Your Camera
Do not subject the camera to high temperatures or high humidity. Do not leave the camera in a vehicle, as the temperature can get very high. Do not subject the camera to strong vibrations, shocks, or pressure. Use a cushion to protect the camera from vibrations of motorcycles, automobiles, or ships. The temperature range for camera use is 0C to 40C (32F to 104F). The monitor may appear black at high temperatures, but will return to normal at normal temperatures. The monitor may respond more slowly at low temperatures. This is due to liquid crystal properties, and is not a malfunction. Sudden temperature changes will cause condensation on the inside and outside of the camera. Place the camera in your bag or a plastic bag, and remove it after temperature of the camera and surroundings are equalized.
Avoid contact with garbage, mud, sand, dust, water, toxic gases, or salts. These could cause the camera to breakdown. Wipe the camera to dry off any rain or water drops. Please do not press forcefully on the monitor. This could cause it to break or malfunction. Be careful not to overtighten the tripod screw when using a tripod. The lens on this camera is not interchangeable. The lens is not removable. Do not hold or force the extended part of the lens. This can cause a malfunction.

Using the Histogram A histogram shows the brightness distribution of an image. The horizontal axis represents brightness (dark at the left and bright at the right) and the vertical axis represents the number of pixels. The shape of the histogram (Dark) Brightness (Bright) before and after shooting tells Dark portions Bright portions you whether the brightness and contrast are correct or not, and lets you decide if you need to adjust the exposure and take a picture again.
Adjusting the Exposure 1p.76 Number of pixels
Understanding Brightness If the brightness is correct, the graph peaks in the middle. If the image is too dark, the peak is on the left side, and if it is too bright, the peak is on the right side.
Dark image Correct image Bright image
When the image is too dark, the part to the left is cut off (dark portions) and when the image is too bright, the part to the right is cut off (bright portions). Understanding Contrast The graph peaks gradually for images in which contrast is balanced. The graph peaks on both sides but sinks in the middle for images with a large difference in contrast and low amounts of mid-level brightness.

An all-in-one digital camera with upgraded basic specifications to assure solid performance in a variety of situations
HOYA CORPORATION PENTAX Imaging Systems Division is pleased to announce the launch of the PENTAX X90 digital camera. Offering upgraded basic specifications, including extra-wide zoom coverage, longer battery life and an electronic viewfinder, this all-in-one-type camera delivers effortless picture-taking in a wide variety of outdoor situations to photographers of all levels. Major Features 1. Versatile optical 26X zoom lens to accommodate a range of subjects Within its compact, lightweight body, the PENTAX X90 features a high-magnification optical 26-times zoom lens offering a focal-length coverage between 26mm wide angle to 676mm super telephoto (in the 35mm format). Coupled with the 1cm Macro mode - which allows the photographer to capture dramatic close-up images of a subject from just one centimeter away - it offers quick, effortless shooting in a wide range of photographic situations. Furthermore, it also provides the Intelligent Zoom function, which extends the zoom coverage to approximately 162.5 times (for a focal length of an astonishing 4225mm in the 35mm format) without compromising the optical performance of the zoom lens.
Pix your life
2. Dependable shake-reduction system for sharp, blur-free images The X90 incorporates the PENTAX-original CCD-shift-type SR (Shake Reduction) system to assure sharply focused, blur-free images even under demanding photographic conditions prone to camera shake, such as when using the zoom lenss super-telephoto range or when shooting a sunset or indoor scene with incident light only. By accurately detecting the amount of camera shake using a high-performance gyro sensor and shifting the CCD image sensor vertically and horizontally at high speed, the X90 offers an outstanding camera-shake compensation effect, equivalent to approximately three shutter steps.*
* The degree of shake-reduction effect may vary, depending on the photographic conditions.
3. Extra-powerful battery for extended shooting sessions Thanks to its large-capacity lithium-ion battery, the X90s battery life is approximately 50 percent longer than predecessor model. This translates into the recording of approximately 255 images** with a single recharge of the battery. This longer battery life is particularly helpful on the road or during outdoor shooting, as it eliminates the necessity of frequent battery recharging.
** Based on measurement conditions conforming to CIPA specifications using the exclusive D-LI106 Lithium-ion Battery.
4. Electronic viewfinder with diopter adjustment for clear image viewing outdoors The X90 comes equipped with an electronic viewfinder of dots, which comes in handy when shooting the subject against harsh backlight or when the user needs a more solid hold of the camera. Since its newly incorporated diopter adjustment mechanism provides a clearer view of the subject and in-finder indications, the photographer can enjoy shooting more comfortably. 5. Movie shooting in high-definition TV image quality, with anti-shake protection The X90 captures high-quality movie clips, equivalent in image quality to that of high-definition TV (1280 x 720 pixels), in 30 frames per second. It also features the Movie SR (Shake Reduction) mode,*** which effectively minimizes annoying camera shake during movie shooting through the use of exclusive software. As a result, the photographer enjoys high-quality, blur-free movie shooting with minimal effort. It is even equipped with an HDMI micro terminal for audio/video signal output, allowing the enjoyment of highresolution movies simply by connecting the camera with a high-definition TV monitor.
*** When the Movie SR mode is selected, the angle of view becomes narrower than normal shooting.
6. Multi-mode exposure system to accommodate different applications In addition to the advanced Programmed AE mode, which automatically selects the optimal combination of aperture and shutter speed for a given subject, the X90 also offers Aperture-Priority AE, Shutter-Priority AE and Metered Manual modes to let the photographer more freely express their creative intention and personal style.
7. High image quality Thanks to the combination of approximately 12.1 effective megapixels, a sophisticated imaging engine and a high-quality PENTAX zoom lens, the X90 delivers super-clear, high-quality images. It even allows the photographer to choose the preferred finishing touch from Bright, Natural or Monotone. 8. Auto Picture mode for hands-off selection of seven different shooting modes The X90 features the advanced Auto Picture mode, which automatically selects the most appropriate shooting mode for a given subject or scene by detecting the subjects lighting and other conditions. This user-friendly mode not only makes the right mode choice for the photographer from Landscape, Portrait, Night Scene, Night Scene Portrait, Flower, Sport or Standard modes, but also features an auto macro mode, which automatically switches the cameras focus range to macro in close-range applications. 9. Face Detection AF & AE function, with an innovative Small Face filter The X90 features the upgraded Face Detection AF & AE function, which automatically detects up to 32 faces in the image field in a mere 0.03 seconds and captures them in great accuracy and with superb clarity, even when the faces are tilted or turned sideways. It also offers a new Small Face filter, which makes the subjects face appear slightly smaller than in reality in recorded images. In addition, the X90 offers other user-friendly functions designed to produce beautiful portraits with ease: the Smile Capture function, which automatically releases the shutter the instant it detects the subjects smile; and the Blinking Detection function, which warns the photographer when the subjects eyes close at the time of shutter release. 10. High-sensitivity anti-shake mode to minimize camera shake and subject shake at indoor events and for fast-moving subjects The X90 comes equipped with the advanced High-Sensitivity anti-shake (Digital SR) mode,**** which allows the photographer to use higher shutter speeds in dimly lit locations by automatically shifting the sensitivity level to as high as ISO 6400 based on the subjects lighting condition. By coupling this function with the dependable CCD-shift-type SR system, the photographer can effectively minimize adverse effects of camera shake and subject shake, even when shooting at such demanding locations as concert halls and indoor sports arenas.
**** When the High-Sensitivity anti-shake mode is selected, the image size is fixed at 5M (2592 x 1944 pixels).
11. Other features 1) The Burst shooting***** at a maximum speed of approximately 11 images per second to capture decisive moments 2) Choice of image format: 4:3, 3:2, 16:9 or 1:1 proportions 3) Large 2.7-inch color LCD monitor with approximately 230,000 dots, treated with AR (Anti-Reflection) coating to minimize reflections 4) Shooting mode palette for easy selection of a desired shooting mode from 20 different options, including a new Baby mode programmed
5) 6) 7)
to capture the healthy, lively face of a baby D-Range setting to minimize excessively overexposed and underexposed areas in the image A selection of digital filters, including Toy Camera and Retro, to add creative visual effects MediaImpression 2.0 for PENTAX image viewing, editing and filing software included (compatible with latest operation systems, including Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.6) Compatibility with Eye-Fi wireless LAN SD memory cards (only USA, Canada, Japan, UK, Germany, and France)
***** When the continuous-shooting mode is selected, the image size is fixed at 5M (2592 x 1944 pixels).
