New Renault Mgane Hatch and New Renault Mgane Coup, which were both unveiled this autumn, mark the beginning of Renaults renewal of its C-segment line-up. With the Hatch version due to go on sale from November 13, 2008, and the Coup to follow in January 2009, the New Mgane range offers remarkable on-road ability, outstanding comfort and a highly practical driving environment, plus a raft of high-end equipment and features.
A SINGLE OBJECTIVE FOR NEW RENAULT MGANE HATCH AND COUP: APPEAL The design of the New Mgane family stems from a bid to produce a range of immediately eye-catching cars that take their inspiration from the world of sport and a passion for cars. New Mgane Hatch stands out as appealing and reassuring, while New Mgane Coup places the emphasis on providing safe motoring pleasure and performance for discerning enthusiasts who are looking for enjoyment to match the newcomers looks, but who also want a car they can drive on a day to day basis. SHARED GENES FOR ROBUSTNESS AND PERCEIVED QUALITY In addition to the robustness promised by their styling, New Mgane Hatch and New Mgane Coup feature a high standard of body panel fit-and-finish, and only quality materials have been chosen for their production. RESPONSE AND RESPECT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT: TWO HALLMARKS OF THE dCi AND TCe ENGINE RANGES In todays context of reducing CO2 emissions and continuing pressure on fuel prices, the New Renault Mgane range features a broad choice of significantly renewed petrol and diesel powerplants which combine performance and respect for the environment. The dCi 85 and the dCi 105, which are acclaimed for the performance and driving pleasure they deliver, have been joined by the dCi 90 DPF and dCi 110 DPF which deliver CO2 emissions of just 118 and 120g/km respectively. The range also includes the new dCi 130 DPF (135g of CO2/km) and will shortly be expanded to include the powerful dCi 150 and dCi 160 engines. Depending on market, New Mgane Hatch and New Mgane Coup can also be ordered with a choice of petrol engines, namely the familiar 1.6 16V and 2.0 16V units, which are renowned for their flexibility, and the new TCe 130 and TCe 180 engines (TCe = Turbo Control efficiency). These two turbocharged engines, which stem from Renault's expertise in the realm of downsizing, are both economical with particularly competitive running and maintenance costs and responsive from very low engine speeds, with power delivered smoothly and effortlessly all the way up the rev range. The production go-ahead for New Mgane Hatch was given a month and a half before the scheduled date (three weeks ahead of schedule in the case of New Mgane Coup) and the staff were prepared to deliver the highest-level quality from start-up.

In addition to heralding a profound shift in Renaults approach to styling, the Mgane Coup Concept show car unveiled at the Geneva Show in the spring of 2008 previewed the launch of a new family of vehicles with genuine character. The elegant New Mgane Hatch and the racy New Mgane Coup each have their own distinctive personality, and both clearly aim to appeal to the motoring public.

DYNAMIC, ELEGANT STYLING FOR NEW MGANE HATCH New Mgane Hatch is designed to win over a particularly exacting clientele and combines styling cues from both the world of sport and the passion associated with cars. From a very early stage, Renault's Design Department worked hand in hand with the project engineers to incorporate sporty styling and robustness into New Mganes genetic make-up, and both are exuded by the new models generously dimensioned body panels and sweeping curves. The result is a family hatchback of 4,295mm in length with an unmistakably dynamic stance thanks particularly to its short front and rear overhangs, its wheelbase of 2,640mm, its steeply-raked roofline and wide front and rear tracks (respectively 28mm and 33mm wider than Mgane II).
Its assertive personality is immediately apparent through its racy front-end looks which feature crease lines that sweep down from the windscreen pillars and across the bonnet. Meanwhile, the streamlined forms of the headlamps extend the fluid contours of the air-intakes to reinforce New Renault Mganes determined expression and piercing gaze. The strong character of New Renault Mgane is also apparent at the rear where the two-piece light clusters not only continue the feature line but also facilitate easy access to the boot. The Latin influence of New Renault Mganes elegantly sensual curves is especially visible when seen from the side. The proportions of its flanks are both harmonious and dynamic, and irresistibly suggest forward movement, as well as genuine personality and the promise of real driving enjoyment.
A COUP INSPIRED BY A PASSION FOR CARS The passion associated with cars is even more evident in the case of New Renault Mgane Coup. The extremely dynamic front-end design of this version features a grille that is made up of two outer air-scoops picked out by a satin-finish chrome trim, plus a central air-intake incorporating a matt-black crossbar. The headlamps, which extend the lines of the two air-scoops, point to a strong, no-nonsense personality, while the crease lines of the bonnet sweep upwards to the windscreen pillars and continue via the raked windscreen and sloping roofline to produce an unmistakably dynamic silhouette. Seen from the side, the graphic forms of its glazed areas, and especially the quarterlights, echo the character line as it strikes rearward to suggest forward movement. New Mgane Coups sculpted rear-end, broad, muscular haunches and low ride-height (12mm lower than the hatch version) ensure that it sits squarely on the road, and its assertive character is further expressed by the form of its rear light clusters which appear to be suspended over the shoulders and which incorporate square taillights set in a black background. The sporting pedigree of the Coup version and its affinity with the Fluence concept car are further accentuated by the two vertical lines which pick out the logo on the hatch and which add a dynamic touch to the rounded forms of the rear. New Mgane Coup is also equipped with an air diffuser visible beneath the rear bumper, while the hatch is topped by an aerodynamic lip spoiler to further highlight the cars sporty design.

The sensation of travelling comfort is further heightened by the particularly roomy cabin which boasts best-in-class front elbow room (1,476mm) in the case of New Mgane Hatch. The Coup comes with the same rear seat as New Mgane Hatch and, thanks to headroom of 830mm, comfortably sits three adults at the back, making it ideal for daily use, solitary jaunts or journeys with friends. New Renault Mgane Hatch and New Renault Mgane Coup also boast a long list of interior features. Both carry over the practical under-floor stowage solutions first seen on Mgane II, while the front door bins can hold a one-litre bottle. The centre console stowage incorporates space underneath the armrest and rear passengers can profit from an open, practical, easily accessible cubby. Both versions also stand out by the amount of luggage they can hold. The hatchbacks boot volume of 405dm3 VDA (including 33dm3 under the floor) figures amongst the best in the segment, while New Mgane Coup tops its particular segment with a score of 377dm3 VDA. Special attention has been also paid to acoustic comfort. The design and sealing quality of the doors and tailgate, the fitment of inserts inside the hollow sections of body components, one-piece cowl sound proofing and foam dashboard structure all contribute to minimizing the transmission of noise into the cabin. The twin-mass flywheel damper that is a feature of all the powerplants available for New Mgane Hatch and New Mgane Coup (except the 1.6 16V 100, dCi 85 and dCi 90 DPF) and the balancer shafts of the high torque engines (dCi 150, dCi 160 and 2.0 16V) also play an important role in this area.
A RAFT OF EQUIPMENT FROM THE NEXT SEGMENT UP In response to customer demand, Renault has taken particular care to ensure that New Mganes driving environment is practical with controls that are both ergonomically positioned and intuitive. The two versions also come with a long list of technological equipment and features traditionally associated with the next segment up and aimed at taking the strain out of driving as well as enhancing travelling comfort. New Renault Mgane and New Renault Mgane Coup are equipped with hands-free entry and ignition, while the same card remotely locks the car when the driver walks away from the vehicle. The doors can also be locked automatically by pressing on the button situated on the drivers side door handle. They unlock when the hand of the person carrying the card approaches one of the door handles or activates the boot latch. Meanwhile, the remote lighting function enables drivers to locate their vehicle thanks to a specific button on the card which switches on the lights. Another comfort feature shared by both versions of New Renault Mgane is the parking brake which is automatically applied when the engine is switched off and released by a simple press on the accelerator pedal with the engine running. This system facilitates easy hill starts and can be activated manually thanks to a switch situated on the centre console.
ALL-NEW POWER STEERING Renaults engineers took a completely fresh look at New Mganes electric power steering compared with that of Mgane II, and the result is a marked improvement in terms of steering precision and ride comfort. Enhanced steering precision New Mganes overall steering ratio is 16:1 compared with 17:1 in the case of Mgane II, The new horned subframe has increased transverse rigidity by a factor of three, Bi-material bushes between the rear suspensions and the bodyshell fulfil both vibration filtering and transversal stiffness, The inductive torque sensor is four times faster than an optical sensor (0.6ms, compare with 2.4ms in the case of Mgane II), Increased steering control unit sampling frequency (1,000Hz, compared with 420Hz in the case of Mgane II), Broader servo-motor bandwidth (300Hz, compared with 70Hz in the case of Mgane II). These modifications combine to improve turning into corners and eliminate inertia and viscosity. The feedback of information from the road feels far more natural. The response of the servo guarantees delivery of 90% of the level of servo assistance requested in just 0.2s, which is half the time required for Mgane II. Enhanced ride comfort The calibration of New Mganes system delivers a standard of comfort and feel identical to that of hydraulic power steering. The phenomenon of hysteresis between the drivers input and the vehicles response, which is a natural feature of hydraulic power steering systems, enables a more informative and continuously increasing climb in turning effort into corners and enhanced comfort through turns.

New Mgane Hatch and New Mgane Coup benefit from a range of engines and transmissions which perfectly respond to the demands of todays motorists. The significantly renewed dCi and TCe powerplants combine fuel efficiency and driving pleasure, and are capable of delivering torque and power from low revs across a broad rev band in all situations.
THE dCi RANGE Depending on the market, the New Mgane ranges extensive line-up of diesel engines features the dCi 85, dCi 90 DPF, dCi 105, dCi 110 DPF, dCi 130 with and without particulate filter, dCi 150 DPF with automatic transmission and the dCi 160 DPF mated to a manual gearbox. All these engines incorporate the best available technology to achieve the market's best trade-off between performance and fuel consumption. CO2 EMISSIONS OF 118 AND 120G/KM FOR THE NEW dCi 90 AND dCi 110 It goes without saying that the New Mgane engine range includes the 1.5-litre diesel powerplant which has been so widely praised for its fuel consumption and driving enjoyment. This 1,461cc block is now available in a choice of four power outputs, since the existing 85 and 105hp units have been joined by two new versions: the particulate filter-equipped dCi 90 and dCi 110. All four stand out through their low CO2 emissions performance (118g/km for the dCi 85 and dCi 90, 120g/km in the case of the dCi 105 and dCi 110). The dCi 90 and dCi 110 engines are B30 biodiesel compatible in certain markets and are equipped with a particulate filter in readiness for Euro5 legislation. Regeneration takes place without the driver even noticing thanks to an additional injector located in the exhaust line. This so-called fifth injector technology, which is protected by 30 patents, contributes to minimizing maintenance costs. Widely praised for its efficiency and acoustic performance, this block boasts punchy, responsive performance from low revs thanks to its opti-
dCi 110
mized combustion (five squirts per cycle) and specific turbocharger management. The dCi 90 and dCi 110 engines deliver peak torque of 200Nm and 240Nm at 1,750rpm respectively. They also feature a new fuel return rail and a new control unit for improved fuel efficiency, while the injection pressure has been uprated to 1,650 bar. The combined cycle fuel consumption of the dCi 90 and dCi 110 versions of New Mgane Hatch has been homologated at 4.5 and 4.6 litres/100km respectively, giving it one of the best performance/fuel consumption ratios of the market. Mated either to a manual five-speed gearbox (JR5) in the case of the dCi 90 or a six-speed box (TL4) in the case of the dCi 110, both engines permit remarkable driving enjoyment. The running and servicing costs of the dCi 90 and dCi 110 engines are amongst the lowest of their class. Oil change intervals are every 30,000km (or every two years) and the life expectancy of the diesel filter is 60,000km. The timing belt needs changing every 160,000km, while the particulate filter comes with a lifetime warranty (more than 300,000km). THE NEW dCi 130

To prepare for the switch to Euro5 legislation, the dCi 130 engine (F9Q) has been significantly revised, and New Mgane Hatch and New Mgane Coup are the first two models of the Renault range to benefit from this work. Mated to a manual six-speed gearbox (ND4), New Mgane dCi 130 returns combined cycle fuel consumption of 5.1 litres/km. This 1,870cc block has peak power of 130hp (96kW) which is available from as low down as 3,750rpm, while maximum torque (300Nm) is available from 1,750rpm. These figures have been made possible thanks to the revised variable geometry turbo with curved blades which contribute to swifter response and the speedier availability of power. The seven-hole injector nozzles (compared with six previously) ensure a finer, more efficient fuel spray. Last but not least, the catalytic particulate filter (regeneration by combustion) and the addition of a new EGR cooler enable it to comply with the forthcoming Euro5 standard. The sum of these technical modifications has improved dynamic and acoustic performance, and optimized fuel consumption. Remarkably powerful yet also very quiet, the particulate filter-equipped dCi 130 is respectful of the environment, too, since it emits just 135g of CO2/km (134g of CO2/km without particulate filter). These improvements have led to lower running and maintenance costs, too. Oil change intervals have been doubled to every 30,000km and the timing belt needs changing every 160,000km, instead of 120,000km previously.
THE dCi 160 WITH MANUAL GEARBOX AND THE dCi 150 WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION TO JOIN THE LINE-UP IN SPRING 2009 New Mgane Hatch and New Mgane Coup are available with the celebrated Renault-Nissan Alliance-developed 1,995cc block (M9R). Coupled with either six-speed auto-adaptive logic automatic transmission (AJ0) or a manual six-speed gearbox, it delivers 150hp and 160hp respectively. It is equipped with a catalytic particulate filter (regeneration by combustion) which has the advantage of functioning without the need for additives. Powered by the dCi 150 engine with automatic transmission (availability depending on market), New Mgane offers outstanding driving pleasure, ease of use and smooth, fluid gear changes. In addition to their performance, noise and environmental credentials, the dCi 150 and dCi 160 engines figure among the most efficient of their class and produce exceptional power outputs of 150hp (110kW) at 4,000rpm and 160hp (118kW) at 3,750rpm respectively. Their maximum torque is 360Nm and 380Nm respectively at 2,000rpm and this torque is readily available all the way up the revs to 5,000rpm. Their 1,600bar common rail fuel injection, piezo-electric injectors, the advanced design of their pistons and their variable geometry turbo ensure class-topping efficiency for a four-cylinder diesel. Equipped with two balancer shafts to combat vibrations and noise, they delivers exceptional driving pleasure and comfort. Thanks to their ultra-fast pre-heat sparkplugs, they fires up straight away, even in very cold weather (minus 23C).
TCe 130: Derived from Nissans normally-aspirated HR15 and HR16 blocks (1.5 and 1.6 litres), this new engine is equipped with an aluminium block and a single-scroll turbo. The profile of the intake ports has been modified in comparison with the normally-aspirated version to encourage the effect known as tumble inside the combustion chamber. This ensures a more homogenous blend which in turn favours a more even spread of the flame for enhanced combustion performance, optimizing torque at low revs without impairing performance at high engine speeds. The continuously variable camshaft angle at the intake port also contributes to improving performance at all engine speeds and to reducing fuel consumption. To deal with the energy produced by the thermo-mechanical constraints associated with this extra performance and the higher pressures inside the combustion chambers, oil jets are employed to cool the pistons.
TCe 180 The TCe 180 (132kW) available for New Mgane Hatch and New Mgane Coup (depending on country) is a new evolution of the 1,998cc turbocharged petrol block which provides unrivalled driving pleasure and already complies with Euro5 emissions legislation. With torque of 300Nm at 2,250rpm, it is extremely responsive and provides exceptional pick-up from low revs thanks to the combination of its twin-scroll turbo and continuously variable camshaft angle at the intake port which optimizes the intake of air into the combustion chamber and which enables the turbine to spin up to speed more quickly. The turbo consequently responds to the slightest touch of the accelerator from revs as low as 1,200rpm. This engine drives through a six-speed manual gearbox (PK4).

06 ENVIRONMENTAL STANCE A STRONG
Thanks to a weight-saving programme, carefully honed aerodynamics, a range of six powerplants which emit less than 140g of CO2/km and a line-up of biofuel-compatible engines, New Mgane Hatch and New Mgane Coup illustrate the achievements that Renault continues to make on the environmental front.
New Mgane Hatch and New Mgane Coup are an average 8kg lighter than their predecessor, despite being 10cm longer. Thanks to their lower weight and optimized aerodynamics (the result of work on the substructure, including wheel deflectors, fairings), the cars that make up the New Mgane range return best level fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, yet not to the detriment of either driving pleasure or performance. Depending on version, savings vary from 2 to 10g of CO2/km (between 0.1 and 0.4 litres/100km in terms of fuel consumption) compared with the equivalent version of Mgane II (same equipment level and engine). New Mgane is also 95% end-of-life recoverable by mass, while almost 12% of the plastics it contains (an average value of 22kg) are sourced from recycling. New Mgane Hatch and Coup are socially responsible cars, too. Almost 70 per cent of all sales will concern models that meet the three criteria necessary to qualify for the Renault eco signature, namely: CO2 emissions of less than 140g/km, or else biofuel-compatible, Manufactured in an ISO 14001-certified factory, 95 per cent end-of-life recoverable, while at least five per cent of the plastics eco cars contain must be sourced from recycling. The New Mgane range includes a line-up of biofuel-compatible engines (bioethanol and biodiesel), including the 1.6 16V 110hp Ethanol powerplant which will be available on many markets from spring 2009.

Impact from the side is a leading cause of fatal injuries. However, specific work into this area has produced very positive breakthroughs. Indeed, New Mgane Hatch and New Mgane Coup inherit the same double side-impact sensors and dual-chamber thorax/pelvis airbags first seen on Laguna III. The latter are designed to adjust the load exerted on the body by applying three times more pressure to the groin area which is more exposed than the thorax. Meanwhile, the fixation rods of the new generation headrests slide within the headrest and no longer within the upper part of the seatback to ensure enhanced protection of the cervical vertebrae in case of impact from the rear. The rods no longer form a rigid element in the seat and this allows the occupants back to sink up to 60mm into the curved, frameless seatback following an impact, resulting in less movement of the head and thorax. The front ends of both New Mgane Hatch and New Mgane Coup have also benefited from work aimed at improving pedestrian impact protection. The rigidity and thickness of the bumper have been modified to protect the lower limbs by absorbing energy at tibia and knee height. Careful attention was also paid to the energy absorption capacity of the bonnet and surrounding structure (wings, opening mechanism, bonnet lining).
The PRC (Pelvis Restrain Cushion) anti-submarining airbag The PRC airbag featured on New Mgane Coup is positioned in the driver and front passenger seat cushions and functions in association with the passive anti-submarining plate located underneath the foam of the seat cushion. It works in exactly the same way as an ordinary airbag, except that the anti-submarining airbags never come into direct contact with the occupant. In an impact, triggering of the PRC anti-submarining airbag limits the displacement of the pelvis.

ACCESSORIES FOR NEW RENAULT MGANE
New Mgane Hatch and New Mgane Coup come with a wide range of customization accessories designed to bring out the best in their looks, enhance travelling comfort and facilitate leisure activities.
EXTERIOR STYLING Sport kits have been developed to allow owners to personalize the exterior of their car and further enhance New Mgane's inherently dynamic looks. New Mgane Hatch can be equipped with: grille trims (depending on engine) which give a New Mgane Coup feel to the front-end styling, a rear diffuser incorporating twin exhaust tailpipes, a rear lip spoiler, a front spoiler, extended sills, The New Mgane Coup Sport Kit features: a front spoiler, extended sills, a rear spoiler with central tailpipe. Extra-tinted glass and a selection of 15-, 16- and 17-inch light alloy wheels are also available to round off New Mganes great exterior looks.
INTERIOR STYLING The list of equipment available to customize the interior of New Mgane includes: cloth or rubber carpet mats (pre-fitted studs permit a swift, safe fitment over the original carpet), a reversible cloth/rubber boot mat marked with the name of the model, two-tone door sills to protect against knocks and scrapes. The list of accessories continues with a range of other comfort, connectivity and security-related equipment such as volumetric and/or perimetric alarms (necessitate the fitment of alarm pre-equipment).
PRACTICAL ACCESSORIES The carrying capacity (volume) of New Mgane can be increased by fitting tow bars and/or roof bars. Two types of tow bar are available: a conventional swan-neck tow bar (New Mgane Hatch only) or a particularly practical RDSO tow bar (tow ball removable without tools) which permits the vehicle's original looks to be restored in a matter of seconds. New Mgane Hatch and Coup can also be equipped with aluminium transverse roof bars. Recesses in the doorframes ensure swift, safe fitment. Renault has taken care to ensure that its roof bars do not lead to deformation, cracks or corrosion. Roof bars and cycle racks are available from dealers as after-sales accessories. Last but not least, the accessory catalogue includes several stowage solutions: Cargo net (fits vertically in the boot, comprises three compartments), Boot net (fixes to the four corners of the boot to hold items firmly against the boot floor), Boot tray (semi-rigid and waterproof, it is marked with the name of the model name and facilitates the transport of soiled and/or damp items), Note Box (ideally positioned within easy reach of the driver, this small carbon colour box can hold up to 100/150 Post-its and pen, for quick, easy note-taking) and Organizer Box.

RENAULTS PALENCIA PLANT IN SPAIN
The Palencia factory employs a total staff of 2,720 and has the capacity to produce almost 310,000 vehicles annually in three shifts on one line.
Palencias modern facilities are particularly suited to the Mgane platform and their flexibility means that New Mgane Hatch and New Mgane Coup can be manufactured at the same time as Mgane II. Significant investment went into the factory notably the paint and body shops prior to production of the Mgane II family. This facilitated the carry over of almost 30%, of existing, high quality tooling which meant that factory-related investment did not exceed 190 million. Furthermore, the decision to manufacture New Mgane Hatch and New Mgane Coup exclusively at Palencia resulted in a significant saving with regard to the investment necessary for the production of a new platform. The vast majority of production-related investment went into ensuring the vehicles perceived quality and durability. Management of the diversity necessitated by the simultaneous production of New Mgane and Mgane II is an essential factor of the production process. The body shop has been equipped to take onboard the introduction of new laser brazing technology for the roof to ensure perfectly accurate for enhanced perceived quality and durability. In addition to minimizing play between the body panels, diode laser brazing is energy efficient, more powerful and takes up less floor space, while the higher number of welds (160 more than Mgane II) also contributes significantly to enhanced quality. To cater for the diversity of models, the body shop has been equipped with some 100 additional robots, which takes the total number to 450. Meanwhile, the production of New Mgane Coup has called for specific facilities, including the introduction of a bespoke workshop for the production of body sides.
A new, fully robotized glazing assembly unit has also been added to the assembly line to ensure precision fitment of the rear screen at high production rates. In addition to guaranteeing rear end waterproofing, this facility contributes to the vehicles perceived quality as a whole, as well as to the durability of the components concerned. This robot also means that the rear screens of New Mgane which are very different to those of Mgane II can be fitted on the same line without slowing down production. More than 1 million has also been invested in the introduction of anti-forget systems used by Nissan which are aimed at enhancing the reliability of certain assembly operations, including the fitment of safety-related equipment such as airbags and seatbelts. As seen in other factories of the Renault group (Sandouville, Novo Mesto), the stepping up of quality control procedures after each operation has already shown its value during previous start-ups. The quality of each new vehicle that has been launched has exceeded that of its predecessor. Thanks to this investment, Palencia will continue to produce the three models of the Mgane II family (Hatch, Coup and Estate), while also ensuring an excellent standard of quality for New Mgane Hatch and New Mgane Coup during production ramp-up. The production go-ahead for New Mgane Hatch was given a month and a half before the scheduled date (three weeks in the case of New Mgane Coup), while extensive measures were taken to enable the factorys staff to deliver best-level quality from start-up. In order to guarantee the highest possible standard of quality from startup, staff from Palencia met their colleagues from other factories of the group, including Novo Mesto in Slovenia and Sandouville in France, with a view to benefiting from the experience of previous successful start-ups (New Twingo, New Laguna). Meanwhile, in 2007, some 150 employees spent time at the Renault Technocentre in Guyancourt, France, to prepare for the arrival of New Mgane by working in close collaboration with the project engineers to take production-related constraints onboard at the design stage. An extensive training plan in 2008 also saw operators at Palencia benefit from some 50,000 hours of instruction relating to the groups best practices and quality procedures, while bespoke dexterity training for staff from the different departments, including logistics, helped perfect assembly operations and component handling. Last but not least, work stations have been made even more practical, thanks notably to the introduction of variable-height skids which do away with the need for awkward working positions on the assembly line for enhanced productivity and quality.
