Renault Megane II sedan
Radically the same
Renault has guts. Not only has the French manufacturer been the first to come up with different concepts, but also where design is concerned Renault sometimes takes radical steps. At its introduction the Megane created quite a stir with a backside that seemed to have been designed in the opposite direction of traffic. At the same time the car was praised for its well-considered interior and unprecedented high level of safety. The car in this test is hardly seen on public roads, but it combines all advantages of the Megane with the traditional look of a sedan: the Megane Sport Saloon.
We asked for it, but especially on a car park packed with the hatchback version of the Megane, a sedan looks very conservative. Even a grey and conservative accountant in dustcoat would consider this to be an inconspicuous car. The charm that makes the hatchback so popular has completely vanished by the addition of a "boot". On the other hand it does offer an enormous luggage space. The back seat too is now more easily accessible and offers considerably more room than average in this segment.
Start button
Like any other Megane, this model has no key either. It merely has a card with buttons to unlock the doors. After that the card is put in a slot in the centre console and all that is needed to start the engine is to press a button. Chances of getting confused over the necessary procedure are minimal, because the display near the speedometer is showing instructions.
Moreover the start button is not only just a nice gadget, but also the first of many safety features that make the Megane into something special. The ignition is usually situated in the steering wheel column close to the driver's knee. The hard cylinder of the lock therefore often causes knee injuries in case of an accident. While other manufacturers simply move the lock (Smart / Saab), Renault makes the whole thing superfluous.
Ergonomics
Another part of the safety package is the headrests, which are adjustable almost up to the roof of the car. Even the tallest drivers are safe in the Megane. It is a shame though that these particularly safe headrests are part of a sensationally dull interior of this test vehicle. The black/grey chequered fabric and black/grey interior apparently had to strike a contrast to the radical design of the car. Except for the looks of the car, every part has been reconsidered. From the adjustment of the seats to the fuel cap: everything is different, everything is smarter. Dull or not: the test vehicle is extremely comprehensive. Cruise control, air-conditioning, a rain sensor, an extensive on-board computer and a radio/cd-player are all standard. The latter sounds, even though it is the most simple version, surprisingly good. The test vehicle has a 1.6 16v engine, which is the most popular of the ten available engines. Although the power source according to Renault is good for an impressive 115 horsepower, in practice this is not very obvious. The character is frankly rather docile. A good performance is possible, but it doesn't come whole-heartedly. Merging in with traffic however is no problem at all and with 60 litres in the fuel tank the Megane will go a long way.
Conclusion
The sedan version of the Renault Megane has the reliable appearance of an average car and offers lots of luggage space. Furthermore the sedan offers all well-known advantages of the Megane. The most important one being a high level of safety, good road holding qualities and several useful ergonomical solutions. In every way the car is just that little bit better thought through than the competition. Therefore the Megane as a sedan is not just an average car.
Safety
All passive safety (=absorbing the crash) is well taken care of and therefore Renault scores high points in crash tests. But much more important is the active safety (=preventing the crash) and that too is well taken care of from the start. Almost straight away the road holding qualities of the Megane are convincingly excellent. "Almost straight away", for steering around the middle is slightly vague. Even when using the car for a longer period one does not really get used to this. Road holding doesn't suffer from it, driving pleasure however does.
The brakes leave no shadow of a doubt: these are of an outstanding quality. When taking the Megane out for a test drive, it would be advisable to first test the brakes. If not, all passengers will soon meet the safety belts.

Scnic II: the intelligence of an MPV, the driving pleasure of a saloon
Following Mgane II Hatch and Sport Hatch, Scnic II is the third vehicle to be unveiled in the X84 programme. With this successor to the benchmark Scnic, Renault takes another step ahead of the competition by combining the versatility and spaciousness of an MPV with the driving pleasure of a saloon. Its compact and dynamic design endow it with a distinctive personality that stands out from the general run of compact MPV models. Scnic II benefits from technical innovations developed by Renault for higher-range models, such as the automatic parking brake, as well as from the companys expertise in passive safety. To be sold initially in five-seat form, Scnic II will in a few months time become the only compact MPV in the segment to offer a special seven-seat version, in the same way as Espace in the top-range segment.
Innovative, compact and dynamic design
The one-box design and the "hatchback-style" rear treatment, contained within an overall length of only 4.25 metres 8cm longer than Scnic suggest new levels of driving pleasure. The special care devoted to standard of finish, and the regularity and width of shut-lines, give Scnic II the appearance of a robust
vehicle shaped from a single block. By carrying across the taut lines of Mgane II Hatch and Sport Hatch, Scnic II displays a modern and expressive style. The use of a front face in tune with the Renault visual identity, and the distinctive treatment of the rear window, signal its membership of the Renault range. The vehicle offers all the features of a grand tourer: wide track, long wheelbase, and reduced overhangs. Warm and welcoming, the cabin interior is equipped with a typically MPV dashboard with a centrally-mounted instrument panel. This makes it visible to all occupants and helps to better share information. The materials used for upholstery and finish reflect Renaults drive for perceived quality, notably the generous use of slush on the upper surfaces of the dashboard. Finally, the "Touch Design" treatment of the Scnic II controls renders their operation more intuitive and more pleasant. Scnic II continues the principle of the " la carte" car introduced with Mgane II, allowing the customer to combine an overall colour and trim scheme (Authentique, Expression, Dynamique or Privilge) with an equipment level (Pack, Confort or Luxe) and a powertrain.
The best of the MPV
Pioneer of the MPV, Renault brings to Scnic II all its expertise in order to achieve maximum interior space. Thanks to the horizontal form of its roof line, Scnic II gains 26mm of headroom in the front, placing it among the best in the class. In addition, elbow room is increased by 23mm. With high priority given to back seat space, Scnic II offers knee room of 226mm, which remains the largest in the market. With a windscreen area of 1.40 sq. metres, unequalled in the segment, Scnic II provides an even more remarkable panoramic view. Scnic II naturally retains all the versatility offered on Scnic and adds new functions. The main new feature is the mounting of the gearchange and, for the Confort and Luxe equipment levels, the automatic parking brake in the dashboard for optimum ergonomics and interior space layout. The floor space thus freed allows the installation of a new sliding central stowage feature. Electrically unlatched, it slides from the dashboard to the back seats for easier sharing between front and rear occupants. In addition, the front passenger seat can now be folded to form a flat, hard-surfaced table. This enables the back seat passengers to enjoy better visibility, while also making it easy to load very long objects. In a further development, the three back seats, when set into their vertical stowage position, latch themselves and maintain the position automatically without the need for bungee-straps. Finally, Scnic II remains the only compact MPV to be equipped with an opening rear window. By treating all free volume as stowage space, Scnic II further strengthens its leadership in terms of travelling comfort. The stowage spaces in Scnic II are more numerous, notably with the 15-litre sliding centre stowage feature, more accessible, and better divided between the front seats (44 litres) and the back (32 litres), creating a benchmark volume for the segment of 91 litres available in total. Increased in size to 17 litres, the refrigerated glovebox becomes the largest in the segment. In addition, four drawers beneath the seats are always accessible, as well as four compartments made possible by the flat floor. According to the position of the back seats, the luggage space varies in volume from 430 to 480 litres (VDA). It can be partitioned off by a luggage retention net.
Exploiting the advances achieved in Mgane II, Scnic II enjoys high levels of acoustic and thermal comfort. The control of wind noise and engine noise means that Scnic II has excellent sound-deadening. Thanks to the higher-capacity heating and air conditioning components from Mgane II, thermal comfort in Scnic II matches the best levels. When it comes to travelling pleasure, the cabin interior provides benchmark interior lightness thanks to a panoramic sunroof with an area of 1.61 sq. metres unique in the segment. At the same time, the fitting of roller sunblinds in the rear doors and an interior communication mirror help to make travelling more sociable. The Renault Card works to the same operating principles as in Mgane II.
Driving to saloon standards
The extended driving position and more vertical steering wheel enhance driving comfort. The gear lever, and the controls behind the steering wheel with their reduced movements, also contribute to "saloon-style" driving pleasure. In other respects, the driver benefits from the dominating position and superior visibility provided by an MPV, since the eye-height from the road remains the same as in Scnic. As a world premiere in the compact MPV segment, Scnic II introduces three technical innovations: the bi-xenon headlamps first seen in Espace IV, the automatic parking brake, and the fuel filler flap with built-in cap. For additional comfort, the model also benefits from parking sensors. Finally, Scnic II offers two navigation systems: Carminat Guidance and Carminat Advanced Navigation System, with colour cartography on wide format screens built into the dashboard. Scnic II uses the front and rear suspension of Mgane II and enjoys the same benefits of precision and roadholding to achieve well controlled dynamic comfort. The use of large-diameter anti-roll bars, and the width of track, ensures exemplary control of roll angles. Little affected by quality of road surface, when accelerating or braking, Scnic II exhibits exemplary stability. The variable-assist electric steering is quick and precise yet without being excessively reactive. Scnic II provides a wide choice of powertrains which make it easy yet dynamic to drive. The petrol engine range comprises the 98bhp 1.4 16V, the 115bhp 1.6 16V, and the 136bhp 2.0 16V, while the diesel range includes the 80bhp 1.5 dCi, the 100bhp 1.5 dCi and the 120bhp 1.9 dCi whose maximum torque is increased to 300Nm. The range of five-speed and six-speed manual gearboxes and the flick-shift proactive automatic transmission is taken from Mgane II with changes in gearing to adapt to the needs of Scnic II. For greater peace of mind, Scnic II provides active safety of the highest order. It is the first MPV in the C segment to be equipped with new-generation ESP including understeer control, and it carries over the tyre pressure monitoring system and the Pax System run-flat tyres introduced by its predecessor. The specification is completed by ABS and Emergency Brake Assist.
Excellence in passive safety
The structure of Scnic II includes many strengthened zones with programmed deformation. The restraint mechanisms of the third-generation Renault System for Restraint and Protection, with three-point safety belts for all seats, guarantee close coupling to the seats and ideal protection for all occupants. The Scnic II safety system includes up to six airbags including two adaptive frontal bags.
A long-lasting investment
Scnic II inaugurates the new AVES (Alliance Vehicle Evaluation Standard) quality standard common to Renault and Nissan, based on customer perception in terms of perceived quality. The global dimension of the Mgane II programme calls for levels of quality and reliability meeting the most demanding standards. The extension of service intervals, improved component durability, the 12-year anti-corrosion warranty, insurance classifications and shorter repair times allow Scnic II to ensure the customer benefits from lower operating costs. Its exterior noise level is only 71dB, the record achieved by Mgane II. Finally, by reducing CO2 emissions and using recycled plastic materials and renewable materials, Scnic II adopts the same environmental solutions as Mgane II.
The Mgane II programme Act II
With over 2 million units produced to the end of 2002, Scnic, voted Car of the Year 1997, has beyond doubt left its mark on the Mgane line and the European C segment. The first compact MPV in the segment, Scnic immediately succeeded in attracting a wide European public looking for interior space and greater versatility, resulting in profound changes within the C segment. From 1996 to 2002, Scnic retained its lead position despite the progressive entry of other manufacturers and the growing number of models in the segment. Since 1998, Scnic alone had a 5.8% share of the European C segment and in 2000, the year in which the Mgane range as a whole achieved its highest performance with 12.4%, Scnic took 6.8% of the segment. With the new Scnic about to be introduced, the Douai factory is operating at full capacity (1,650 units/day on average in 2002) building a model which enjoys undisputed success. In 2002, Douai set a new production record for the third consecutive year of over 350,000 units per year. With the arrival of the new model, production is organized around two final assembly lines, one exclusively for Scnic II, the second capable of building a mix of Mgane II Hatch, Scnic II and Mgane II Coup-Cabriolet. This flexibility has been made possible by an industrial process designed from the outset around a single platform and the use of a very high number of common components by the different body types. Thus Douai will benefit from an overall production capacity of 550,000 units a year with flexibility between three different body types.
Optimum safety in all circumstances
Mgane II Coup-Cabriolet confirms the progress made by Renault in the area of passive safety. The stiffness of the body has been designed to keep the cabin space intact in the event of a rollover with the aid of strengthened windscreen pillars, body sides and sills, and by two fixed hoops installed as standard. The thirdgeneration Renault System for Restraint and Protection and the six airbags, including the two anti-submarining airbags beneath the cushions of the front seats, provide occupants with optimum protection. In addition, Mgane II Coup-Cabriolet can be equipped with two automatic safety hoops which deploy whenever an imminent rollover is detected.
From the third quarter of 2003, Mgane II Coup-Cabriolet will round out Renaults offensive on the C segment and more particularly on the cabriolet market. In Europe, this market has almost tripled in 10 years thanks to the ever-increasing number of coup-cabriolets launched since 1996, accounting for a third of sales in 2001. With the preceding generation Mgane Coup and Cabriolet, Renault achieved third place in the coup and cabriolet class in Europe in 2001. At the end of October 2002, more than 70,000 units of Mgane Cabriolet, which was introduced in March 1997, had been built in the Dieppe factory. Mgane II Coup-Cabriolet is the first car of this type to be equipped as standard with a folding glass roof, which was designed and developed with Karmann. The roof module is delivered to the Douai factory where it is installed directly into the car on the production line. Thanks to the flexibility of the production tooling at Douai, Mgane II Coup-Cabriolet will be built on the same line as Mgane II Hatch and Scnic II.
At the 2003 Geneva Motor Show,
Renault unveils New Kangoo and Laguna line-up
At the 73rd International Geneva Motor Show, Renault is set to unveil New Kangoo, in addition to Scnic II and Mgane II Coup-Cabriolet. New Kangoo has been given a more grown-up look and fitted with a host of new travelling comfort, safety and powertrain features to retain its lead position in the purpose-built small van market. Exactly two years after its market launch, Laguna gets a boost in driving pleasure with the 2.0T and 2.2 dCi engines with Proactive transmission, as well as new technology, colour and trim schemes and body colours. Inspired by the world of MPVs, Trafic is now available in a new Minibus variant capable of accommodating up to eight occupants and designed for both business customers and families seeking a comfortable, high-performance vehicle. Renault has teamed the five-speed Proactive automatic transmission with the 2.0T and 2.2 dCi engines, thereby boosting its line-up of automatic transmissions. Renault expands its range of exclusive sporting models with New Clio V6, dedicated to automotive passion. New Clio V6 offers unusually high performance and driving pleasure thanks to a host of new developments. Furthermore, New Clio V6 and Clio Renault Sport 2.0 16V will benefit from Renault Sport's new personalization programme.
New Kangoo is fitted with a seat belt reminder on the driver's seat. The vehicle also incorporates two front airbags driver and passenger as standard, optional side head/chest airbags, front seat belts fitted with pretensioners and load limiters that can be adjusted for height, three-point seat belts with load limiters in the 60/40 rear bench seat, Isofix child seat fittings in the middle rear seat and the Renault Anti-Intruder Device (RAID). A driving style for all requirements Always intent on staying ahead of the pack, New Kangoo is available with a wide range of the latest powertrains that is unique on the market. It offers the liveliness and performance of the 75bhp 1.2 16V and 95bhp 1.6 16V petrol engines, and the 65bhp or 80bhp 1.5 dCi diesel engines known for their driving pleasure, low fuel consumption and low noise levels. With the 80bhp 1.5 dCi engine, 90% of torque is available at very low revs for fast acceleration combined with fuel consumption of only 5.3l/100km over a full cycle. The entry-level engines 60bhp 1.2, 55bhp 1.5 dCi and 65bhp 1.9 D are particularly economical and suited to city motoring. Now Renault has added another innovation: the 1.6 16V Proactive automatic transmission version. Based on the powertrain fitted to New Clio, Scnic and Laguna II, the "K4M" (1598cc, 16 valves) has been tailored to suit the outlook and expectations of Kangoo drivers. It develops 95bhp (70kW) at 5,000rpm and supplies maximum torque of 148Nm at 3,750rpm, with 90% available from 2,500 to 5,500rpm. With its nine shift patterns and fuzzy logic taking account of individual driving styles and road profiles, the Proactive automatic transmission lets the driver use the potential of the 1.6 16V engine to best advantage. It also offers driving pleasure and fuel consumption that are practically identical to those of engines with manual gearboxes. New Kangoo 1.6 16V Proactive goes from 0-100kph in 12.4 seconds, which is 4.5 seconds faster than its predecessor, and has a top speed of 162kph, compared to the former 147kph. Fuel consumption in the combined cycle remains a very reasonable 8l/100km. The three IF05 petrol engines, Electri'cit and Elect'road electric vehicles and the LPG version are respectful of the environment, putting New Kangoo into the "clean cars" category. A sound investment New Kangoo, made at the MCA site in Maubeuge awarded ISO 14001 certification, is the first vehicle after Mgane II to adopt life-cycle environmental management (LEM). The aim of LEM is to ensure optimum recyclability for ELVs, in addition to Renault's efforts to cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The target is to make it possible to recycle 95% of the vehicle's weight, without compromising on quality and features. The need to use parts that can easily be recycled at the end of their useful life has led Renault engineers and suppliers to seek innovative ideas and to include recyclability into the design, development and quality processes. Mountings have been carefully studied to ensure that vehicles can be taken apart easily. This has been done with the side mouldings, the sliding side door panels, which use the same material throughout, the door sill trim and the centre pillar. The windscreen washer system has been redesigned to collect as much as possible of the liquid for re-use. The front bumper and grille, made of recyclable materials, represent
another step towards using fewer materials. A system has been introduced to stamp parts with a materials code so that they can be identified immediately. While remaining true to the original Kangoo concept, New Kangoo goes even further in the direction of motoring economy by offering even lower running costs. With the 1.5 dCi diesel and the 16V petrol engines, oil changes are needed only every 30,000 kilometres compared to 20,000 kilometres previously, making New Kangoo best in class.
Together with new design and technology,
Renault Laguna II boosts pleasure with 2.0T engine
driving
Exactly two years after its introduction, Laguna II takes on a new look and offers new engines and technology, as well as brand-new trim materials and body colours. A new version powered by the 2.0-litre 16-valve turbo 2.0T engine and a special equipment package is added to the range. A true grand tourer, it provides both first-rate comfort and dynamic behaviour. Laguna II 2.2 dCi is now available with the fivespeed Proactive automatic transmission with flick-shift operation. The technological standing of Laguna II is further enhanced with new features such as ESP with understeer control, a new version of Carminat Guidance, and a 4x40W Cabasse audio system with a facia-mounted 6CD changer. All versions in the Laguna II range also benefit from new, more attractive colour and trim schemes and three new body colours.
Laguna II has won a host of prizes and awards, including a five-star rating in the crash tests carried out by the independent European body Euro NCAP, and became a force to be reckoned with in Europe in 2002. Despite heightened competition, Laguna II has put in a strong sales showing. Remarkable sales success In 2002, European sales of Laguna II increased by 10% over 2001, with a D-segment share of 8.7%. Ranked No. 2 volume-manufactured car behind the VW Passat, Renault Laguna II was in the top six, alongside models of German origin the BMW 3-series, VW Passat, Audi A4 and Mercedes C-class. The Opel Vectra, Citroen C5 and Peugeot 406 were all well behind in the rankings. Today, Laguna II enjoys sales success in more than 60 countries worldwide. It has been specially adapted to satisfy the operating conditions found in various parts of the
globe, with new heavy-duty suspension and engines adapted to different fuel grades. Outside Europe its main export markets have been Japan, Russia, Australia, South Africa, Brazil and Mexico. Laguna II should continue to improve its share of the D segment in 2003 thanks to these new developments and the increase in sales of diesel-powered models and the Sport Tourer version (35% of the mix).
New technologies for new driving sensations and greater safety Laguna II's powertrains, materials and electronics all use the latest techniques and technologies dedicated to driving sensations, some of which are brand-new. The hallmarks of Laguna II are driving pleasure, active and passive safety, travelling comfort and user peace of mind. Laguna II was the first car on the market, in any segment, to have achieved the maximum five-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests. It has since been joined by Mgane II and Vel Satis, while the only competitor cars yet to have achieved this level of passive safety are the Mercedes C- and E-class and the Saab 9-3. A new boost for unequalled driving pleasure In early 2003, Renault launched a new version of Laguna II powered by a four-cylinder 2.0 16V turbo engine driving through a six-speed manual gearbox. This engine is a derivative of the unit that powers Vel Satis and Avantime. While it develops the same comfortable power output of 165bhp at 5,000rpm, the version has a higher maximum torque of 270Nm at 3,250rpm (+8%) instead of 250Nm, thus providing better response. With its optimized power and torque curves, the Laguna II 2.0T provides easy driving at low speeds. Its twin-scroll turbocharger boosts efficiency while limiting the re-aspiration of exhaust gases. A twin-mass damping flywheel reduces drivetrain noise. The conservative valve timing, together with a special timing belt tensioner, further reduce noise. With this new engine, Laguna II is able to offer the same level of performance as a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre engine but with 15% to 20% lower fuel consumption in the combined European cycle. The Hatchback thus achieves a maximum speed of 218kph (on a circuit) and covers a kilometre from a standing start in 29.4sec, while consuming only 8.2 litres/100km in the complete cycle. Before the end of the year, this new powertrain will also be offered with the five-speed Proactive automatic transmission with flick-shift selection. The 2.0T version is equipped with the same uprated suspension as the 3.0 V6 and 2.2 dCi units. Laguna II 2.2 dCi available with Proactive five-speed automatic transmission From early 2003, Laguna II 2.2 dCi will be available with the Proactive five-speed automatic transmission with flick-shift selection. This latest-generation common-rail diesel engine features a variable-flow injection pump, a 16-valve aluminium cylinder head and a variable-nozzle turbocharger. It benefits also from balancer shafts and a twin-mass damping flywheel, keeping down noise. When it is associated with the fivespeed Proactive transmission, driving pleasure, performance, comfort and economy all
The luggage cover in the Sport Tourer versions is now cloth rather than the TEP formerly used. As in Espace IV, the cloth reduces the noise made by the luggage cover in use, while the matt appearance of the material makes this feature more attractive and discreet. The safety belts have also changed, with the adoption of a new woven structure which gives a more unified appearance while making the belt more flexible, and therefore quicker and easier to pull through the reel. Each equipment level sees new upholstery, adding value to each version. On the Authentique level, the colour of the existing warp-and-weft upholstery has been changed from blue to charcoal, and the door panels which formerly matched the seats now use a smooth cloth. The Expression level, conventional in its design, sees its velour upholstery replaced by a completely new warp-and-weft material which gives the cabin interior a more modern appearance. It is available in two colours, charcoal and beige. The door panels feature a smooth cloth. The Dynamique version remains unchanged in its interior appearance. A new part leather/Alcantara upholstery has been developed for the 2.0T variant and is also available as an option on the Dynamique and Privilge levels. Teamed with "Elan" leather door panels, the colour and trim scheme boosts Laguna II's top-range sporting positioning. The Privilge and Initiale finishes respectively retain their part leather/velour and leather upholstery but now adopt either a charcoal or a beige interior tone replacing the "Earth" colour. On the Initiale, Privilge and Expression levels, the customer now has a choice between a light-tone interior with charcoal upholstery, or a dark tone with beige upholstery. Three new metallic body colours will be introduced in 2003: Orage Blue, Garance Red and Amazon Green.
Renault Minibus
unveils
MPV-inspired
Trafic
Trafic Minibus is a new member of the Trafic passenger-car lineup. Able to accommodate up to eight occupants, Trafic Minibus is aimed at business customers, but also at families looking for a comfortable vehicle with good performance. Through its strong design, its dynamic qualities and a wide range of comfort and safety equipment, this vehicle is inspired by the world of the MPV. Trafic Minibus is available with one petrol and three diesel engines, including the new 99kW (135bhp) 2.5 dCi 16V unit from the Trafic range. It will go on sale in the summer of 2003.
Carrying over the same fundamentals that have made Renault Trafic a benchmark in the light commercial vehicle market, the four new Minibus versions complete the top end of the Trafic range, which now totals 51 versions. Trafic Minibus can be tailored to all needs and all kinds of use: travel agencies, hotel courtesy transport, VIP transport, as well as large families seeking an MPV-style vehicle. Such customers are aware of the appeal of a vehicle that is comfortable, multifunctional, and versatile, meeting their needs in terms of both safety and travelling comfort. A powerful design and passenger-car comfort reminiscent of an MPV The Minibus version carries over in its entirety the powerful and expressive design of Trafic. Passenger-car features include bumpers painted to match the body colour. As an option, this body-colour finish can be extended to all the protective side mouldings. The interior treatment, specific to the Minibus version, resembles that of an MPV, with velour upholstery for all the seats, and carpet covering the entire floor. A removable baggage cover completes the vehicles standard equipment. The ergonomics of the driving position have been developed with special care, with a functional dashboard incorporating multiple stowage spaces, a reach-adjustable steering wheel and a height-adjustable drivers seat. The gear lever, housed in the dashboard, makes for easier movement into the rear area of the vehicle.
The Trafic Minibus easily accommodates up to eight occupants. The first rear bench seat has space for two or three people, and a second-row bench, easily folded or removable, is offered for three further passengers. A wide range of comfort and safety features Trafic Minibus offers many comfort features as standard, including power-assisted steering, central door locking, electric front windows and door mirrors and tinted glass, as well as many practical and clever stowage spaces. This specification can be added to, optionally, with an additional rear heating system with air recycling mode, front and rear air conditioning together with a heat-reflective windscreen, Carminat GPS Advanced Navigation system, and a wide range of audio systems with cassette or CD player, with or without changer. Safety, a major attribute of all the companys passenger cars, is also one of the strong points of Trafic Minibus. As standard, it features ABS with EBD, and driver and front passenger airbags. All seats have headrests and three-point safety belts with pretensioners, also incorporating load limiters in the front seats and the side seats in the second and third rows. These features can be optionally supplemented by side and curtain airbags. A new 2.5 dCi engine A new 2.5 dCi common-rail turbodiesel engine is added as the top-range unit in addition to the existing engines. Developed from the 2.2 dCi 16-valve unit, this engine benefits from the latest technical developments in the area of common-rail direct injection. It develops a maximum power of 99kW (135bhp) at 3,500rpm, and a maximum torque of 310Nm achieved from 1,750rpm. Two other common-rail direct-injection turbodiesel engines are also available, the 1.9 dCi with 60kW (82bhp), or with 74kW (100bhp). The 2.0 16V petrol engine, fitted to several models in the Renault range, develops 120bhp (88kW) of power at 4,750rpm and 190Nm of torque at 3,750rpm in the Minibus model. All these engines, except for the 60kW (82bhp) version of the 1.9 dCi, drive through a six-speed manual gearbox which improves response in each of the intermediate gears, while at the same time reducing fuel consumption and noise levels.

Renault expands range of automatic transmissions
Teamed with the V6 petrol and diesel engines powering Vel Satis and Espace IV, as well as the V6 petrol units on Laguna and Avantime, the five-speed Proactive automatic transmission is set to become more widely available. It will be fitted with the 2.0T and 2.2 dCi engines in various models in the range within the next few months.
Introduced at the beginning of 2001 in Laguna's V6 24V engine, the five-speed autoadaptive transmission developed with Aisin Warner has today become a benchmark in automatic transmissions. Lightweight weighing just 90kg and offering a torque capacity of as much as 350Nm, this transmission represents the highest level of driving pleasure. Thanks to its fifth gear, its liveliness is improved while engine speeds and therefore noise levels in motorway cruising are reduced. The fifth gear also results in lower fuel consumption, and the partial declutching of the transmission to reduce idling drag also contributes in this way. Today, this transmission equips Vel Satis and Espace IV 3.5 V6 24V and 3.0 dCi as well as Laguna and Avantime V6 24V. In the near future, as part of a programme to make automatic transmission more widely available, it will also be fitted to the four-cylinder versions of our top-range models, beginning with the 2.0T units in Vel Satis, Espace IV, then Avantime and finally Laguna, as well as the 2.2 dCi engines in Laguna, Espace IV and then Vel Satis.
Renault rounds out line-up of exclusive sports models
New Clio V6 dedicated to motoring passion and driving pleasure
An exclusive sports model carrying the Renault Sport badge, Clio V6 showcases the styling of the latest-generation Clio. Blending sportiness with flowing lines, the unique design also boosts efficiency. Thanks to a host of new developments, New Clio V6 combines pleasure of use with unusually high performance, with a 0-100kph time of less than 6 seconds. New Clio V6 features a new chassis together with 18-inch wheels. Fitted with a completely new top end, the 3-litre 24valve V6 engine delivers 255bhp at 7,150rpm and 300Nm at 4,650rpm. The six-speed gearbox benefits from specific developments, including a shorter final drive, revised internal gear ratios and shorter selector movements. Assembled at the Alpine facility in Dieppe, New Clio V6 features enhanced levels of equipment and perceived quality.
Successfully launched in June 2001, the new-generation Clio has posted steady growth, occupying second place in the Western European B segment and first place in the French market in 2002. The image-building model of the range, Clio V6 gets a complete revamp. New Clio V6 geared to driving pleasure New Clio V6 is an exclusive sporting model designed to offer pleasure in owning and using a distinctive car, paralleled by high performance, notably with a 0-100kph time of less than 6 seconds. New Clio V6 displays an even more incisive front face by adopting the styling of the latest-generation Clio. The front bumper, grille, bonnet and twin-unit xenon headlamps are entirely new. The new extended front wings accommodate 18-inch tyres. The air intakes with wide-mesh grille covers augment the flow through the new Titanium Grey side scoops and bumper. The design of the back end has also evolved, with a new longer and higher rear hatch wing.
A new chassis teamed with a powertrain full of character The new chassis runs on 18-inch tyres specially developed for sporting use. The front suspension castor angle has been increased and the anti-roll bar is now connected via drop-links. The kinematics of the rear suspension have been completely revised with the adoption of a new sub-frame. Thanks to new mounting points and longer radius arms, the rear wheels are moved further aft. These new dimensions significantly increase cornering speed potential and improve stability under cornering loads. Together with the aerodynamic developments, they also optimize straight-line stability. The 3.0 V6 24V engine has been extensively developed, particularly the upper part to favour cylinder filling at medium and high speeds. Developing 255bhp (187kW) at 7,150rpm, this engine loves being run at high speeds. It is equally comfortable at more normal speeds with maximum torque of 300Nm at 4,650rpm. The adoption of new catalytic converters allows the IF Euro 4 emissions standard to be achieved. The PK6 six-speed gearbox has a shorter final drive, thereby lowering the overall gearing to the benefit of response and acceleration. The internal gears are more closely spaced. These developments are accompanied by a redesigned shift mechanism: selector movements have been reduced and the stops are more pronounced. Noises emanating from the driveline are filtered by a damped twinmass engine flywheel. Manufactured by Renault and generously equipped New Clio V6 is assembled at a rate of 12 vehicles per day at the Alpine plant in Dieppe using bodies supplied by a special department within the Flins plant. Travelling comfort takes a major qualitative step forward with a new soft-feel dashboard. The body-coloured steering wheel insert, dashboard mouldings and centre tunnel further enhance the sporting presentation. New Clio V6 is fitted with the same structural strengthening as the latestgeneration Clio and a complete range of safety features: ABS, twin adaptive front airbags together with safety belts equipped with load limiters and pretensioners, and head/thorax side airbags. Thanks to multiplexing, New Clio V6 is equipped with a rain sensor coupled with a light level sensor, and regulated air conditioning with a digital readout. A 4x40W audio system with mono CD in the dashboard and a 6CD changer are also available. New Clio V6 will come in three colours: Titanium Grey, Iliade Blue and Mars Red.
Renault Sport launches personalization programme
Clio Renault Sport 2.0 16V and New Clio V6 take on an even more exclusive look with the personalization programme developed by Renault Sport. Choosing from a series of interior and exterior treatment packs, the most demanding enthusiasts can now custom-tailor their car.
Some objects are given a personal touch and speak volumes about their owner. Some cars do, as well. The Renault Sport badge is synonymous with maximum driving pleasure and passion for sporting cars. Renault Sport now gives customers the opportunity to personalize their Clio 2.0 16V or New Clio V6 with a choice of special colours, trim and features. A whole range of colours is available: Sirius Yellow and Orion Green for the Clio 2.0 16V, Saturn Yellow, Callisto Brown and Moon Grey for New Clio V6. All these are special-effect colours, with the colour changing depending on the angle at which the light falls on the surface. Inside the car, effects are created by the colour of the leather upholstery: Sahara Beige, Ocean Blue and Mist Grey for both models, with two further colours, Storm Grey and Sepia Brown, reserved for New Clio V6. For the interior, two complementary leather packs are offered. According to choice, full-grain Nappa leather is used to trim the seats, door panels, steering wheel, and the gear lever and handbrake gaiters, providing a pleasant feel. Also available, an Alcantara pack provides trim for the windscreen and roof pillars. For New Clio V6, the trim components are finished in a "soft touch" black paint, while the carpets, also black, add to the elegance of the cabin interior. Finally, special alloy wheels complete the range of choices for both models. These highly personal Clios will be made at the Alpine factory in Dieppe, where all models in the Renault Sport range are built. Available from May 2003, items in the personalization programme can be ordered as options.
Renault presents new-generation particulate filter
The new Euro IV exhaust emission standards, which come into force from 2005, require better performance of various engine components including exhaust after-treatment systems. In response to the fiscal incentives which already apply in some countries, Renault is introducing a 2.2 dCi engine which complies with these standards (IF Euro IV), equipped with a new-generation particulate filter. This filter/catalytic converter, of the so-called periodic regeneration type, works without any additive. The automatic regeneration is controlled by the fuel injection computer.
Three vehicles score five-star rating in Euro NCAP crash tests
Renault has one of the safest product ranges in Europe
The latest results released by the independent consortium Euro NCAP confirm that Renault truly enjoys best-in-class status when it comes to safety. Mgane II and Vel Satis have now joined Laguna II as members of a very exclusive club holders of the maximum five-star rating with the added privilege of ranking "best in class" in their respective market segments. Renault now has the safest range of cars in the automotive industry. True to its principle of "safety for all", Renault strives to provide the same optimum level of safety for all vehicle passengers front and rear across the entire range.
The announcement of the results of Euro NCAP's latest phase of crash tests has confirmed Renault's supremacy in safety. With a score of 33.12 points out of 371, Vel Satis is now the safest saloon in the executive car segment. With a score of 33.10 points out of 372, Mgane II is the first C-segment vehicle to achieve this level of leading-edge performance. Genuine expertise for the safest range on the market The Euro NCAP results show that the Renault brand has become synonymous with safety. This is particularly important as the assessment criteria adopted by Euro NCAP, for front impact in particular, cover over 80% of accident scenarios that actually occur on the road. As with Laguna II, Euro NCAP underlined the excellent crash resistance of the structures of Mgane II and Vel Satis. The cabin was totally intact after the impact, with no intrusion whatsoever. In terms of occupant restraint, readings taken from the dummies following the Euro NCAP crash tests indicate that Mgane II and Vel Satis drivers and passengers are
Vel Satis: Front impact: 14.12 / 16 points, Side impact (barrier): 16/ 16 points, Pole impact: 2/2 points, Seat belt reminder: +1 point. 2 Mgane II: Front impact:14.10 / 16 points, Side impact (barrier): 16/ 16 points, Pole impact: 2/2 points, Seat belt reminder: +1 point.
very well protected in an impact. This is shown by the colours of the dummies after the test: mainly green (good protection) for the head and legs, and yellow (adequate protection) for the thorax. Both vehicles are fitted with the third-generation Renault System for Restraint and Protection (SRP), which was first used on Laguna II: front airbags with two inflation levels to adapt to impact severity, coupled with safety belts fitted with load limiters set at 400kg for the front seats and double pretensioners for the driver and front seat passenger. Safety is the keynote of Renault's corporate culture Safety has been a key focus of Renault's corporate culture since it began its first accidentology and biomechanical studies some 50 years ago. Since then Renault has constantly introduced innovative approaches to push back the limits and enhance the safety of its products. Determined to immediately extend innovative features to the whole model line-up, Renault has always developed vehicles which offer consistent levels of safety. Although today all car makers share the same safety equipment, Renault's strength lies in the expertise of the 600 technicians and engineers who work on assembling and developing these systems.
After securing fourth place in the 2002 World Championship,
Renault F1 Team targets several podium finishes this season
After 12 months of work and optimization, the Renault F1 R23 was unveiled at Le Castellet in France on January 23. The car will make its race debut in Melbourne, Australia, on March 9. In its bid to close the gap further still on the top three teams, Renault F1 Team will concentrate its efforts on two fronts: reliability and performance.
New looks and enhanced performance for the R23 By successfully achieving its objectives in 2002, Renault F1 Team sent a clear signal to its rivals that it will be a force they will have to reckon with in the future. For far from settling for the positive results obtained to date, Renault has set its sights higher still for 2003 with the target of at least four podium finishes in the course of the season. During the year that elapsed between the new car's initial design and the moment its wheels turned for the very first time, the exacting and demanding work carried out under the direction of Mike Gascoyne, Technical Director of Renault F1 Team UK, in close collaboration with engineers from the Technocentre, was geared essentially to optimizing the integration of the engine in the chassis. The R23 features a new mechanical package as well as a brand new aerodynamic concept aimed at ensuring improved out-of-the-box reliability and performance. The RS23 engine takes the concept of its predecessor a natural step further. Designed by Renault F1 France Managing Director Jean-Jacques His and his team, it has focused on improved power output and an even lower centre of gravity. Fuel consumption has also been reduced and the new unit makes one with the latest chassis. Once again, reliability was the key priority for the engineers working out of Viry-Chtillon. The 2003 block is brand new, stronger and is built using a totally different construction process.
Intensive aerodynamics and engine development programmes are planned for the year ahead which points to significant scope for progress over the season. Renault goes with the Heathrow Agreement Early January 2003, Mild Seven Renault F1 Team chose to sign the so-called "Heathrow Agreement" which imposes an upper limit of 10 days' private testing during the season. In exchange, the team will be allocated an extra two hours of free practice, with three cars, on the Friday of each Grand Prix weekend. Says Flavio Briatore, the Team's Managing Director: "The team has the necessary openness of mind to appreciate the advantages such a measure offers. Two hours of extra free practice will enable our drivers, as well as our engineers, to get a better understanding of the tracks on which the Grands Prix actually take place. It's an excellent opportunity, especially in the case of those tracks at which private testing isn't possible. It also gives Fernando Alonso a chance to familiarize himself better with the different circuits. This decision will in no way detract from our development programmes." The drivers: experience and potential Once again, the experience of 28-year old Jarno Trulli will facilitate development work, as well as the team's podium finish chances. The 2003 season also sees Fernando Alonso make his debut as a fully-fledged member of the team after a successful year as test driver. Fernando, 21, is the youngest driver in the paddock and intends profiting from the experience of team-mate Jarno to "learn above all" but also help the team progress. To second them and assist with car development, Scotland's Allan McNish and Frenchman Franck Montagny have been named as the team's test drivers for 2003. Fresh from two years with Toyota F1, Allan will drive during the Friday test sessions of Grand Prix weekends and will help fine-tune the car's set-up for each circuit. Meanwhile, Franck Montagny, winner of the Telefonica World Series by Nissan, will drive in the 10 days of private testing programmed this year.
