Owners Manual
Thank you, and congratulations on your choice of the Roland PM-30 Personal Monitor. Before using this unit, carefully read the sections entitled IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS (page 2) USING THE UNIT SAFELY (page 35) IMPORTANT NOTES (page 5) Additionally, in order to feel assured that you have gained a good grasp of every feature provided by your new unit, Owners manual should be read in its entirety. The manual should be saved and kept on hand as a convenient reference.

Main Features

The PM-30 is a high-quality stereo monitor amplifier designed especially for use with Rolands V-Drums. This 2.1-channel system features a total output of 200 watts to provide a drum sound with amazing presence. Main Unit features 12-inches (30-cm) woofer plus tweeter. The wedge-shaped design makes monitoring easier and provides both a sense of power along with great monitor performance. Additionally, the PM-30 features switchable SUBWOOFER and FULL RANGE playback modes (ranges), as well as a woofer control function that allows you to balance the volume level with the satellite speakers. Each satellite speaker includes a high-quality 4-inches (10-cm) full-range speaker. Featuring authentic wood cabinets, these units provide clear, natural stereo sound. In addition, they come with specialized mounting stands, enabling the units to be set up in a variety of ways. The system includes dedicated channels designed to reproduce all of the V-Drums sound. Along with superior basic performance, the V-Drums channels also provide great additional features, such as a PUNCH switch, which produces an even more powerful drum sound, and a V-Drums input, which enables connection to a VDrums sound module using only a single stereo (TRS) cable coming from the VDrums headphones output. The unit comes equipped with a three-channel stereo mixer function for superior system expandability. In addition to a V-Drums sound module, you can also connect and simultaneously monitor multiple devices, such as additional sound modules and CD players, MP3 players, or any other external audio sources. Also included is a three-band equalizer to further shape the sound and a LINE OUT jack useful for expanding the system. Includes handle and casters for easy portability.

Before using this unit, make sure to read the instructions below, and the Owners Manual....
Do not open or perform any internal modifications on the unit....
Do not excessively twist or bend the power cord, nor place heavy objects on it. Doing so can damage the cord, producing severed elements and short circuits. Damaged cords are fire and shock hazards!....
Do not attempt to repair the unit, or replace parts within it (except when this manual provides specific instructions directing you to do so). Refer all servicing to your retailer, the nearest Roland Service Center, or an authorized Roland distributor, as listed on the Information page....

This unit, either alone or in combination with an amplifier and headphones or speakers, may be capable of producing sound levels that could cause permanent hearing loss. Do not operate for a long period of time at a high volume level, or at a level that is uncomfortable. If you experience any hearing loss or ringing in the ears, you should immediately stop using the unit, and consult an audiologist....
Never use or store the unit in places that are: Subject to temperature extremes (e.g., direct sunlight in an enclosed vehicle, near a heating duct, on top of heat-generating equipment); or are Damp (e.g., baths, washrooms, on wet floors); or are Humid; or are Exposed to rain; or are Dusty; or are Subject to high levels of vibration....
Do not allow any objects (e.g., flammable material, coins, pins); or liquids of any kind (water, soft drinks, etc.) to penetrate the unit.
Immediately turn the power off, remove the power cord from the outlet, and request servicing by your retailer, the nearest Roland Service Center, or an authorized Roland distributor, as listed on the Information page when: The power-supply cord, or the plug has been damaged; or If smoke or unusual odor occurs Objects have fallen into, or liquid has been spilled onto the unit; or The unit has been exposed to rain (or otherwise has become wet); or The unit does not appear to operate normally or exhibits a marked change in performance....
Make sure you always have the unit placed so it is level and sure to remain stable. Never place it on stands that could wobble, or on inclined surfaces....
The unit should be connected to a power supply only of the type described in the operating instructions, or as marked on the unit....

Placement

Using the unit near power amplifiers (or other equipment containing large power transformers) may induce hum. To alleviate the problem, change the orientation of this unit; or move it farther away from the source of interference.

Protect the unit from strong impact. (Do not drop it!)....
This device may interfere with radio and television reception. Do not use this device in the vicinity of such receivers.
Do not force the units power-supply cord to share an outlet with an unreasonable number of other devices. Be especially careful when using extension cordsthe total power used by all devices you have connected to the extension cords outlet must never exceed the power rating (watts/amperes) for the extension cord. Excessive loads can cause the insulation on the cord to heat up and eventually melt through....
Noise may be produced if wireless communications devices, such as cell phones, are operated in the vicinity of this unit. Such noise could occur when receiving or initiating a call, or while conversing. Should you experience such problems, you should relocate such wireless devices so they are at a greater distance from this unit, or switch them off.
Before using the unit in a foreign country, consult with your retailer, the nearest Roland Service Center, or an authorized Roland distributor, as listed on the Information page....
Do not expose the unit to direct sunlight, place it near devices that radiate heat, leave it inside an enclosed vehicle, or otherwise subject it to temperature extremes. Also, do not allow lighting devices that normally are used while their light source is very close to the unit (such as a piano light), or powerful spotlights to shine upon the same area of the unit for extended periods of time. Excessive heat can deform or discolor the unit.
Do not put anything that contains water (e.g., flower vases) on this unit. Also, avoid the use of insecticides, perfumes, alcohol, nail polish, spray cans, etc., near the unit. Swiftly wipe away any liquid that spills on the unit using a dry, soft cloth....
When moved from one location to another where the temperature and/or humidity is very different, water droplets (condensation) may form inside the unit. Damage or malfunction may result if you attempt to use the unit in this condition. Therefore, before using the unit, you must allow it to stand for several hours, until the condensation has completely evaporated.

When connecting / disconnecting all cables, grasp the connector itselfnever pull on the cable. This way you will avoid causing shorts, or damage to the cables internal elements.
A small amount of heat will radiate from the unit during normal operation.
To avoid disturbing your neighbors, try to keep the units volume at reasonable levels. You may prefer to use headphones, so you do not need to be concerned about those around you (especially when it is late at night).
Before connecting this unit to other devices, turn off the power to all units. This will help prevent malfunctions and/or damage to speakers or other devices.
When you need to transport the unit, package it in the box (including padding) that it came in, if possible. Otherwise, you will need to use equivalent packaging materials.
Although the LED is switched off when the POWER switch is switched off, this does not mean that the unit has been completely disconnected from the source of power. If you need to turn off the power completely, first turn off the POWER switch, then unplug the power cord from the power outlet. For this reason, the outlet into which you choose to connect the power cords plug should be one that is within easy reach and readily accessible.
Use a cable from Roland to make the connection. If using some other make of connection cable, please note the following precautions. Some connection cables contain resistors. Do not use cables that incorporate resistors for connecting to this unit. The use of such cables can cause the sound level to be extremely low, or impossible to hear. For information on cable specifications, contact the manufacturer of the cable. Wrap the power cord around the cord hook when transporting or storing the unit.

Maintenance

For everyday cleaning wipe the unit with a soft, dry cloth or one that has been slightly dampened with water. To remove stubborn dirt, use a cloth impregnated with a mild, non-abrasive detergent. Afterwards, be sure to wipe the unit thoroughly with a soft, dry cloth.
Never use benzine, thinners, alcohol or solvents of any kind, to avoid the possibility of discoloration and/or deformation.

Additional Precautions

Use a reasonable amount of care when using the units buttons, sliders, or other controls; and when using its jacks and connectors. Rough handling can lead to malfunctions.

Proper Use of the Casters
The PM-30 is equipped with casters, which make it easier to transport.
Attaching and Removing the Casters
You can attach or remove the casters as shown in the following figure.

Be sure to remove all the casters when accidental movement may be dangerous, such as when setting up the PM30 on stage, or when transporting it in a vehicle. This is a heavy piece of equipment. To prevent injury caused by the unit overturning or being dropped, two or more people should work together when carrying the unit.
If casters have been attached to the amp, make sure it is used only on a stable, level surface.

Attaching the Mount Bars and Clamps
1. As shown in the figure, turn the satellite speakers over and place them on the floor, then screw in the mount bars. * To protect the satellite speakers cosmetic appearance, place cloth or paper between the speakers and the floor surface when attaching mount bars. 4. Take the satellite speakers with the mount bars attached to them and insert the ends of the mount bars into the clamps provisionally tightened in Step 3.
* You can screw in the mount bars with less force by inserting a screwdriver or other rigid shaft into the holes in the side of the mount bars and grasping and rotating the shaft to screw in the bars. 5. Slowly tighten the screws to firmly secure the clamps.
2. Loosen the provided clamp screws to open the clamps.
3. Attach the clamps to the pipe used for securing the satellite speakers (diameter 1-1/2 inches / 38.1 mm), and screw them tight enough to prevent them from slipping down (provisionally tighten).

* To keep the units from separating and falling, secure the mount bars in a position such that the ends of the mount bars extend at least 20 mm (13/16 inch).
To prevent the satellite speakers from falling, release them only after confirming that they are firmly secured.
To prevent the satellite speakers from overturning, attach them so they are oriented perpendicular to the floor.
Take care not to allow hands and fingers to become pinched when attaching and removing the units.

Panel Descriptions

Main Unit: Front Panel

V-DRUMS/CH1 1. PUNCH Switch
Setting this switch to ON produces a dynamic drum sound while increasing the perceived power of the sound. Switch this on whenever needed. * The effect of this function is applied to the device connected to V-DRUMS/CH1.

6. VOLUME Knob

Adjusts the volume of the main unit. You can use this to achieve a volume balance between the main speaker and the satellite speakers. * This does not affect the sounds output from the SPEAKER OUT, headphones, and LINE OUT outputs. * No sound is output from the PM-30's speakers when the WOOFER CONTROL VOLUME knob is set to 0.

2. VOLUME Knob

Adjusts the volume of the device connected to V-DRUMS/CH1. * If you connect a sound module with a high output level , distortion may occur if you turn the volume level up too much. Be careful.

MASTER EQUALIZER

7. EQUALIZER (BASS) Knob
Adjusts the low-frequency tone quality.

3. VOLUME Knob

Adjusts the volume of the device connected to CH2.
8. EQUALIZER (MIDDLE) Knob
Adjusts the midrange tone quality.

4. VOLUME Knob

Adjusts the volume of the device connected to CH3.
9. EQUALIZER (TREBLE) Knob
Adjusts the high-frequency tone quality.

10.VOLUME Knob

Adjusts the volume of the overall system. * When headphones are connected, this adjusts the headphone volume. * This does not affect the output to LINE OUT.

WOOFER CONTROL

5. MODE SELECT Switch
This switches the range of sound output from the main unit. SUBWOOFER: Only sounds in the low-frequency range are output. When used together with the satellite speakers, this mode produces a drum sound with great presence. This is optimal when VDrums stands are used. FULL RANGE: This provides powerful, full-range sound, from low frequencies on up to the high end.This also enables the unit to be used for smaller ensemble performances as a main speaker for the V-Drums. * This does not affect the sounds output from the SPEAKER OUT, headphones, and LINE OUT outputs. 11. PHONES Jack

Connect the system headphones (optional) here. * No sounds are output from the main unit speaker or satellite speakers when headphones are connected.

12. POWER Switch

This turns the power to the system on and off. * If you need to turn off the power completely, first turn off the POWER switch, then unplug the power cord from the power outlet. Refer to Power Supply (p. 5). * To prevent damage to the system and any connected devices, turn the power on and off according to the instructions in Switching the Power On and Off (p. 10). * This unit is equipped with a protection circuit. A brief interval (a few seconds) after power up is required before the unit will operate normally.

13. V-DRUMS Input Jack
Use a single stereo cable (sold separately) to connect the output from the V-Drums sound modules PHONES OUT to this input jack. For more detailed information with examples of using VDRUMS input, refer to Connections (p. 10).

SPEAKER OUT

18. SPEAKER OUT (L, R) Jack
Use the supplied cable to connect the satellite speakers here. * Be sure to use the supplied speaker cables as the connection cables. * Connect the included satellite speakers. * To prevent damage to the equipment, always connect and disconnect speaker cables with the system power turned off.
14. LINE IN (L/MONO, R) Jack
Connect V-Drums sound modules and other line-level devices here. Connect devices with monaural output to the L/MONO jack.
15. LINE IN (L/MONO, R) Jack
Connect line-level devices (e.g., synthesizers and sound modules) here. Connect devices with monaural output to the L/MONO jack.
Satellite Speaker: Rear Panel
16. LINE IN (L/MONO, R) Jack
Connect line-level devices (e.g., recorders, CD/MP3 players, etc.) here. This input also includes RCA phono inputs, convenient for connecting CD players and similar devices. Connect devices with monaural output to the L/MONO jack.

19. INPUT Jack

Use the supplied speaker cables to connect the satellite speakers to the main unit SPEAKER OUT jacks.

3. Turn the MASTER VOLUME knob to achieve a provisional volume level making further adjustment of the volume settings and tone easier. 4. Turn the V-DRUMS/CH1-CH3 VOLUME knobs to adjust the volume balance between the connected devices. 5. Turn the WOOFER CONTROL VOLUME knob to adjust the volume of the main unit while obtaining a balance with the volume from the satellite speakers. 6. Turn the BASS, MIDDLE, and TREBLE knobs to adjust the overall tone. 7. Adjust the overall volume level with the MASTER VOLUME knob. * If the sound is distorting, lower the MASTER VOLUME knob, the V-DRUMS/CH1-CH3 VOLUME knobs, and the volume knobs on the devices connected to the V-DRUMS/CH1-CH3 inputs to adjust the volume until the sound is not distorted.

Setup Examples 2 (When Using the PM-30 as a Stage Monitor)
This example shows how you can enjoy the fullest use of the PM-30s array of input and output connections when using the unit as a stage monitor. You can monitor the V-Drums sounds and sounds from other sources, all simultaneously. Another benefit of this setup is that using the V-Drums stereo input allows you to adjust the monitor (PM-30) volume level with the V-Drums sound modules PHONES knob while leaving the output level to the PA unchanged.

MODE SELECT: SUBWOOFER

* Depending on the settings, the sounds output by the PM-30 may cause the V-Drums pads to trigger by mistake or otherwise operate incorrectly. If this occurs, resolve the problem either by positioning the PM-30 and the V-Drums pads further apart or by lowering the sensitivity setting on the V-Drums sound module. The PM-30 is not merely a monitor for use with V-Drums, but also can be used as a monitor with a variety of other devices, and can even be used as a simple PA in smaller venues. Here are some specific examples of different ways to use the system.

Satellite Speakers Attached to the Main Units Handle
Using the same procedure as that used in attaching the satellite speakers to the V-Drums stand, the satellite speakers can be clamped to the main units top handle to provide an integrated monitor system. With band performances at smaller studios, you can produce an effect very similar to acoustic drums by placing the PM-30 behind the V-Drums player, thus allowing the other band members to monitor the V-Drums sound at the same time.

Audience

Satellite Speakers Attached to Mic Stands
You can remove the mount bars from the satellite speakers and attach these speakers to mic stands (optional). This allows you to separate the satellite speakers to emphasize the stereo effect and provides greater freedom in speaker layouts.
Satellite Speakers Placed on Desk or Table Top
You can remove the mount bars from the satellite speakers and place these speakers on a desk or table. This allows you to use the PM-30 as a 2.1-channel monitor with greater spread when playing synthesizers or other such instruments. Never place it on stands that could wobble, or on inclined surfaces.

The PM-30 is not designed to offer magnetic shielding.
