Using the Arpeggiator

Select a patch. Press the ARPEGGIO ON button so its lit, and then hold a chord on the keyboard
Congratulations on your purchase of the Roland SH-201. This TurboStart contains stepby-step instructions that will quickly introduce you the SH-201s major features.

Initialize

Use this procedure to restore the factory settings: Power on the SH-201 while holding down the PRESET and USER buttons. Press the WRITE button.
Tip: You can press the ON button a second time, so it blinks, to activate the Hold feature that makes the arpeggiator continue to play even after you take your hands off the keyboard. Press the TEMPO 5 or 6 buttons to change the rate at which the arpeggiator is playing back, or tap the TAP button to play the desired tempo. You can select one of 32 arpeggiation types by pressing ARPEGGIO SELECT so its lit, and then using the BANK and NUMBER buttons to select the desired arpeggio template. Press ON once more to un-light it and turn the arpeggiator off.

Selecting Patches

The SH-201 contains 32 patches, organized into two groupsPreset and User for a total of 64 patches. Use the following procedure to select and listen to patches: 3 Press PRESET or USER to select the desired group. Press A, B, C, or D to select the desired bankeach bank contains eight patches. Use the NUMBER 1-8 buttons to select the desired patch. 5

Using the Recorder

The SH-201 has a built-in recorder for capturing up to eight short phraseseach one can be up to eight bars longthat play back repeatedly. Each phrase contains the notes you play on the keyboard as well as any realtime changes you make to the current sound using the SH-201s knobs. Use the following procedure to record a phrase. Press the REC buttonit begins blinking, and the metronome begins sounding. Press a NUMBER 1-8 button to specify the number of bars you wish to record. Press PLAY/STOPa one-measure (4 beats) countoff plays, after which you can begin recording your performance. Press PLAY/STOP to end recording. To save your recording, hold down the REC button and press WRITE. Press an NUMBER 1-8 button to select one of the eight phrase memory locations for storing your phrase. Press WRITE again to confirm your choice. To select a phrase for playback, press and hold the REC button, press the phrases NUMBER 1-8 button, and then press PLAY/STOP to begin playback.

Saving Patches

You can save your sounds in any of the 32 User memory locations: Press the WRITE button. Press A, B, C, or D to select the bank in which you want to store your patch. Use the NUMBER 1-8 buttons to select the desired User patch memory location. Press WRITE again to complete the procedure.
