Like everyone else in the car biz, Saab is leery of the term station wagon, preferring SportWagon to describe its luxury hauler. But it looks like a station wagon to us, and a roomy, well-appointed one at that. The 9-5 SportWagon is offered in three uniquely Saab editions, Linear, Arc, and Aero. The Linear model is the entry offering, powered by a 185-hp version of Saab's 2.3-liter turbo four, the mildest in the 9-5 range. The Arc uses more boost to make 220 hp, while the Aero huffs up 250 hp. A five-speed manual is standard, and a five-speed automatic with manumatic shifting is optional. Other features include traction- and stability-control systems, as well as anti-lock brakes. The Saab's cargo floor rolls out for easy loading, and tie-down hooks keep things secured back there. Updates for 2005 include three new colors and a new, optional DVD-based nav system.

There's some confusion about the vintage of Saab's first SUV, the 9-7X. Although production began in 2005 and some were sold as '05s, Saab is considering '06 as the rollout year. No matter, the 9-7X is a five-passenger variant of GM's mid-sizeSUV platform with distinct Saab touches such as the center-console-mounted ignition switch. Also new is the 9-3 SportCombi five-door wagon. The top-of-the-line Aero "form," as Saab calls its trim levels, gets a new 250-hp, 2.8-liter turbocharged V-6 with a standard six-speed manual or an optional six-speed automatic with steering-wheel controls. The 9-3 Linear and Arc merge into a single base model using Saab's 210-hp four-cylinder turbo engine. Unchanged: 9-2X, 9-5.

Each year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations New Car Assessment Program (NCAP)crash tests cars, light trucks, sport-utility vehicles, and vans that are new, popular, redesigned, or have improved safety equipment. These vehicles are then rated on how well they protect drivers and passengers during frontal and side collisions. Continuing to expand its luxury lineup after wholesale updates for 2002, Saab will market its 9-5 SportWagon with a choice of Linear, Arc, or Aero editions. One of three new model names introduced for 2002, the Linear offers a single engine option, Saab's 2.3-liter DOHC 16-valve turbo four. At 185 hp, it's the mildest version of the engine offered in the 9-5 range. The Arc uses high turbo-boost pressures to make 220 hp, while the Aero makes 250 hp. All are offered with a five-speed manual transmission (standard) or and optional five-speed automatic with manumatic shifting. Other features include electronic traction- and stability- control systems as well as anti-lock brakes. The Saab's cargo floor rolls out for easy loading, and tie-down hooks keep things secured back there. Though pricey, Saab wagons are shapely and desirable players in this competitive segment.
