Standing tall

ets be honest, Samsung isnt exactly the first name that springs to mind when one thinks of high quality home theatre. Things are however changing, and we at Audio Video have been some of the first people around to witness and review some of the products that are taking Samsung up a good couple of rungs in the A/V arena. An issue or so ago we featured their Blu-ray player that certainly upped the ante in the video quality stakes. This issue its the turn of their HT-TXQ120 DVD Home Theatre System, which packs practically every home theatre feature known to Mankind barring Blu-ray and HD-DVD into a package that is both visually and audibly appealing, particularly when you add in its value for money quotient.
Unlike many other home theatre solutions, which are small enough to fit into one medium sized box, the HT-TXQ120 is supplied in three fairly large containers. One box contains the speakers and stands, the second the main control unit, which incorporates the DVD player, and the third box contains the subwoofer. The first thing that needs to be done once all components are unpacked, is to decide if you want the satellite speakers to be mounted on your walls, or on the supplied stands. On the stand front, you have the option of tall or short stands.
I decided to go for the tall stands, and assembling these only took a few minutes. Next I attached the main unit to its stand and as with the speaker stands, I appreciated the attention Samsung had paid to cable management. This was

important, as the main unit has a relatively thick cable attached to it, and this cable connects to the subwoofer. connected the aforementioned cable from the main unit, and finally plugged the power cable into A/C. With the system connected and properly placed, you can appreciate the looks of the components.The speakers are slim, the freestanding DVD player/main unit looks classy, and even the sub looks as good as a box can be expected to look. I did however feel that the LED display on the main unit looked a bit garish, although this thankfully can be dimmed. Also, you have to get used to the fact that the gloss black finish will pick up finger marks very easily. One last small gripe before I move on to system performance was that the side mounted vertical disc loading slot was not illuminated. This meant that when I had the lights turned down a little, the slot was difficult to see. On the plus side, Samsung supply the HT-TXQ120 with a set up microphone and the auto set up feature works reasonably well. I used auto set up and tweaked the system a little by ear too. As far as video performance is concerned, the HT-TXQ120 certainly does a good job. There is a slight improvement in onscreen
image quality as you move from standard definition video up to 1080p.Yes, the Samsung does scale all the way up to 1080p. Typically the HT-TXQ120 delivers good colour balance with nice detail and depth. Movement is also good, particularly at higher resolution settings. For a relatively inexpensive home theatre system, the HT-TXQ120, barring one or two slight niggles, performed well on the audio side too. Its sub didnt play quite as low as I hoped it would, and it didnt deliver the most controlled low bass Ive heard. It was however good at producing the rumbles and booms associated with action DVDs. Integration with the satellite speakers wasnt perfect on music, but on movies it was decent. The satellite speakers however sounded good, and their midrange clarity meant that both movies and music was delivered with a fair amount of precision and detail. High frequencies, while not quite being able to deliver all the detail of upper frequency harmonics, were good to listen to too. Overall the Samsung HT-TXQ120 showed that good looks, sound, value and performance can be had at a fair asking price.
