Good but slightly pinched Build quality seems good, ear cushions are comfortable and a little ear warming is to be expected. A slight but worthwhile reduction in ambient noise I bought these mainly for my daily commute on the London Underground and can only comment on this l... Excellent sound quality, poor noise cancellation The sound quality with these headphones is incredible.

Keep Noise Away with Sennheiser's New PXC 450 Headphones

With NoiseGard 2.0

Sennheiser, one of the best known producers of professional audio equipment, recently introduced a new pair of high-end headphones boasting some of the company's most exotic technologies. The PXC 450 is presented by Sennheiser as a "circumaural high-end travel headphone set with NoiseGard 2.0 technology and TalkThrough function for the best possible attenuation of ambient noise". I see this whole noise cancellation thing as a double-edged sword. If you're on a plane or in another vehicle and there are no risks, it's great; but if you're walking, crossing the street or driving your car, this can cause a lot of problems since you will be completely deaf to the outside noises. Sennheiser achieves noise cancellation with two components. The first is the "adaptive baffle damping in combination with the patented Duofol diaphragms" and the second is the Noise Guard 2.0, which is an active noise compensation system. Let's see what the producer has to say about its new technology: "NoiseGard 2.0 has perfected the NoiseGard principle thanks to the use of optimised circuitry design and even more efficient processors. It also uses better quality microphones, which enable more sophisticated pick-up of unwanted noise. Specially developed filter algorithms enable improved active noise compensation of up to 90% (23 dB)". Keep in mind that this technology relies on power to function, which means that you'll always carry 2 AAA batteries. The headphones can work without the batteries, but you won't have the sweet NoiseGard 2.0. The microphones fitted on the set are also used for the TalkThrough function that enables users to hear somebody without taking their headphones off. What's more, when the TalkThrough is activated, any background noise is filtered out electronically. High-end stuff costs and the PXC 450 is no different, since not everybody can afford the $600 price tag; however, what you get is excellent audio quality and advantages you don't have with regular headphones. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is.

Noble Peace Prizes
Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7 Sennheiser PXC 450
We almost couldnt get these phones because Sennheiser was still obsessing over the noise-cancellation data. Boy, did it pay off. Wired Bombastic noise canceling. Oversize cups fit listeners from Dumbo on down. Monitor button useful for hearing the captain apologize for ineffective air-conditioning and impending doom. Tired Uncomfortable earcups made me sorry that security had nabbed my box cutter. Pressure on the cansas when snoozing against the windowsummons terrifying feedback shriek. $450, www.sennheiser.com
Active Noise-Canceling Headphones
Back in the day, active noise canceling meant a quick roundhouse for the proud grandmother in the middle seat. Then came the Bose QuietComfort headphones, the first to cut the clamor by generating a sound wave opposite the ambient buzz. Bose still makes a sweet headset; wed rate the QC2 at a more-than-solid 8 out of 10. But we recently tested four new models and found that Bose is no longer king of the ring. joe brown

Primarily a pro audio company, Audio-Technica wanted its entry into this arena to boast the best possible sound qualitywith or without the noise canceling activated. Thank you, neurotic Japanese engineers. Thank you. Wired Amazing sound, balanced and sweet, from Segovia to Snoop Dogg. Lightweight and comfortable. Battery still kickin after two weeks of nearly constant use. Oh yeah: excellent, clean noise canceling. Tired The only new model without a monitor button. $220, www.audio-technica.com
Philips product development team traversed the globe and took 86 molds of human ears from every inhabited continent. They created the ultimate average ear shape and made these headphones to fit it. Wired Super comfy for long stretches. Blocks a surprising amount of noise just by virtue of their shape. Already a bargain at list, but we found em online for 95 bucks! Tired Sounds muddy once you switch the power on. Overlarge case is a better tambourine than headphone holder. Noise canceling gets buzzy when battery is low. $160, www.philipsusa.com
When we first ogled these exquisitely crafted cans, we almost forgave Sony for pushing ATRAC3. When we put them on we were right back to bitching about Memory Sticks and UMDs. Like most of Sonys recent audio endeavors, these look far better than they perform. Wired Oozes first-class, from the swank leather case to the smoked metal accents. Decent sound. Tired Hisssssssssssss. The only pair we tested that produces an audible hum when noise cancelation is switched on. There is just no excuse for this kind of behavior. $200, www.sonystyle.com

The PXC 450 is a circumaural high-end travel headphone set with NoiseGard 2.0 technology and TalkThrough function for the best possible attenuation of ambient noise. The PXC 450 enables an unprecedented sound experience for people on the move, thanks to its adaptive baffle damping in combination with the patented Duofol diaphragms, which prevent unwanted partial oscillation and thus guarantee a highly natural, lifelike sound quality. Users of a PXC 450 who wish to communicate with their neighbors can do so without taking off the headphones: when the TalkThrough function is activated, professional quality microphones mounted on the outside of the headphones pick up all acoustic signals in the immediate vicinity. Unwanted background noise, such as the sound of the engines on a plane, is filtered out electronically to a great extent, so that only the neighbor's voice is passed on through the headphones into the user's ear in top audio quality. The PXC 450 is foldable. Volume control integrated in the headphones and a single-sided detachable and replaceable cable ensure maximum convenience for the user.
