The speed is excellent and the picture quality is superb. I like the camera, I haven't used it a lot yet, but works fine in normal light (indoors and out). I like the quality and functions until now.

(I originally had the sony cybershot t77. Do NOT buy this camera if you plan to use it with a McIntosh computer. The PMB software for Mac is wholly inadequate.

The Sony DSC-HX5V is a brand new camera announced in CES and released early 2010. I got this a few days ago and have tried every combination of setting to get the best image but all the pictures were soft and very noisy. panorama mode works great but softens the image sometimes if ligh conditions are not optimal.

DSC-HX5V

10.2 MP | 10x OPTICAL ZOOM | 3.0 LCD1
The DSC-HX5V has a powerful 10x optical zoom (25mm equivalent) wide angle G lens capable of capturing 1920x1080i AVCHD movie. The cameras Exmor R CMOS sensor allows users to capture stunning low-light images and sweeping panoramic views of up to 270-degrees in iSweep Panorama mode. Capture the best shot in fast action with up to 10 frames per seconds shooting at full 10.2MP resolution.
Take clearer photos with less grain in low-light conditions
The DSC-HX5V features a 10.2 megapixel, back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor. This advanced technology leverages the full resolving power of the wide-angle G lens, plus gives the camera stunning lowlight sensitivity for capturing extraordinarily clear images with drastically reduced grain. Working together, the BIONZ image processor and Exmor R CMOS sensor also enable the cameras extremely fast 10fps, Anti Motion Blur, Hand-held Twilight and 1080i movie modes.9
Be sure to catch all those once-in-a lifetime moments
The DSC-HX5V can capture up to ten full 10.2 megapixel resolution images per second. So now you can be sure to capture the bat hitting the game-winning homerun, the lead runner crossing the nish line, and other decisive moments. The camera also uses a mechanical shutter to help reduce distortion when continuously shooting moving subjects.
Professional-quality G Lens
Used in top-of-the-line digital single lens reex (DSLR) cameras, the G lenses on the DSC-HX5V offers a 10x optical zoom (25mm equivalent) wide-angle lens to capture the action up close or more of the scene in landscape or group portraits in tight spots.
Pinpoint the exact location of every shot you take
An integrated GPS receiver and compass record the location and direction of every shot you take. The receiver also automatically adjusts the cameras time zone setting, which is very convenient when traveling. Once uploaded to compatible PC you can use supplied PMB software or web application, like Google Earth mapping service. Now you can relive your adventures in a whole new way!4
AVCHD for TV: 1920x1080/60i
Ideal for playback on HDTV, the AVCHD format captures a high degree of detail and smooth movement. Record AVCHD movies up to 1920 x 1080 at 60i9. Video clips can be played back directly from the camera, or can be transferred to DVD or Blu-ray Disc media. They can then be played back on HDTVs via compatible Blu-ray Disc players, PlayStation3 consoles and compatible PCs.10
Capture breathtaking panoramic shots
Intelligent Sweep Panorama mode lets capture stunningly expansive shots with ease. Simply press the shutter button and sweep the camera horizontally or vertically over your desired scene. The camera shoots continuously at a high speed, automatically adjusts the position of each image, then seamlessly stitches them up to 100 pictures into one panoramic photo. This model even detects faces and moving objects, intelligently stitching subjects of different widths together to minimize distortion. Available in standard and wide options, this feature lets you take panoramic shots up to an amazing 270 degrees.

Additional features:

TransferJet technology allows easy wireless sharing11 Enjoy easy connectivity via HDMI10 Anti Motion Blur and Hand-held Twilight modes reduce grain and blur Card slot for optional Memory Stick Duo and SD/SDHC media13 Includes PMB (Picture Motion Browser)2 and PMB Portable Software3

Enjoy smoother movies

Optical SteadyShot image stabilization with Active Mode gives you the freedom to shoot movies even while on the move. By providing up to 10x the correction of standard mode, Active Mode compensates for excessive camera shake so you can move along with your subject while shooting to bring you smoother looking movies.

Does not use Face Detection function. Selects the face the camera is to automatically focus on. Detects and shoots with priority on childs face. Detects and shoots with priority on adults face.
[Face Detection] cannot be selected in the following situations: In Easy Shooting mode In Movie Mode In iSweep Panorama mode You cannot select [Off] when the self-timer is set to [Self-portrait One Person] or [Self-portrait Two People]. You can select [Face Detection] only when the focus mode is set to [Multi AF] or the metering mode is set to [Multi]. The Face Detection function does not work when using the digital zoom. Up to 8 faces of your subjects can be detected. Adults and children may not be recognized correctly depending on the conditions. During Smile Shutter shooting, [Face Detection] is automatically set to [Auto] even if it is set to [Off].
zRegistering the priority face (Selected-face Memory)
Normally the camera automatically selects the face to focus on according to the [Face Detection] setting, but you can also select and register a face to be given priority.

Face Priority Frame Off

1Press z on the control button during Face Detection. The leftmost face is registered as the priority face, and the frame changes from to an orange frame ( ). 2Each time you press z, the priority face moves one face to the right. Press z repeatedly until the orange frame ( ) is on the face you want to register.
3To cancel the face registration (Off), move the orange frame to the rightmost face, then press z again.
When you remove the battery from the camera, the face registration is reset. When the registered face disappears from the LCD screen, the camera returns to the setting selected by [Face Detection]. When the registered face is shown on the LCD screen again, the camera focuses on the registered face. It may not be possible to detect the registered face correctly depending on the surrounding brightness, the subjects hairstyle, etc. In this case, register the face again under the conditions where the image will be shot. When the Smile Shutter function is used with the Face Detection frame registered, Smile Detection is performed only on the registered face. You cannot register the priority face in Easy Shooting mode, Manual Exposure Shooting mode or when the self-timer is set to [Self-portrait One Person] or [Self-portrait Two People].
