A few questions from an Xperia X10i.
themaltese 3 posts since Jul 11, 2010
Dear S/E:
I am extremely happy with my X10i, and yesterday I received and installed the latest update with no problems; however, I have a few questions:
1) Why is it that you do not give us "permission" to uninstall things such as the Moxier suite and PlayNow (which is unavailable to us in the USA) without us having to resort to the extreme of rooting?
2) Why is it that you do not give us access to equalizer settings? Again, only through rooting, can we get access to this. (note: the 3rd party apps in Android store are all junk) Would it be that difficult to add an equalizer in MediaScape?
3) Why is it that Skype comes preinstalled on the X1, but not on the X10? I'm on the TMobile network, and here in the USA, Skype for Android is only available to those on the Verizon network. I am forced to use Nimbuzz (which is a great application by-the-way), but it would be nice to have the actual Skype application that is available on the X1. If you got "permission" to preinstall it on the X1, I would assume you can do the same with the X10.
I truly believe that the X10 is an "iCrap" killer; however, if the little things I mention above were to be addressed, in my opinion, this would make a lot of X10 users happy, and make the X10 truly an iphone killer in the eyes of others.

This is the same for Australian customers - PlayNow will not work here, but I can't uninstall it and, everytime I open my task killer, it's running. At least give users in courtries that can't access PlayNow the option to uninstall it.
And the Moxier apps - this is my personal phone not my work phone. I have a gmail account which means I have my organiser, calender, contacts, etc, all syncing from gmail using the gmail app but, even though I don't use it, or need it, I can't uninstall it and, as with PlayNow, everytime I open my task killer at least one, if not more, of the Moxier apps are running.
I love my X10. I agree that it's far better than iPhone (and my friend with an iPhone agrees). I don't want to have to root the phone just to be able to get rid of apps that I don't want/need/ use.
Please, please, PLEASE!! SE can you please give an option to uninstall these with the 2.1 update.

I had the same PlayNow error issue, and it was driving me off the walls, since MediaScape was completely useless. However, seems like the latest update fixed it - get the Update Service desktop app, install it and follow instructions on how to update your software (if you still have the phone - I am on the verge of smashing my in the wall, SE did a pretty crappy job with most of the Android experience, and that's coming from an applications developer )

Oh, and on the Skype question - for the US market, Skype has a contract only with Verizon, so no other Android phones have it. The one Verizon phones use is developer esp for the carrier. As far as I know, X1 is not an Android phone, therefore Skype for it is different. Try fring, it has the exact same functionality, including international calling.

I had posted this in July, so since then, yes I did get the PlayNow issue resolved with the update; however, BIG whoopy. There's really nothing there of interest. I'd still just rather uninstall the application, as all it does is just use up memory.
As for Skype, I use Nimbuzz and I'm happy with it; however, I would still rather have just the Skype application. Nokia managed to do this on it's N900, and it's got it's own, unique operating system. True the X1 is not an Android phone, but yet you still get a Skype app that you can use on other networks. Perhaps the problem is licensing issues within Android (i.e. Android OS + Skype app = Verizon).
The equalizer is a moot point. I use another MP3 player to listen to music while I run.
I still have the phone (unbelievably), and I'm okay with it now; however, I still have another couple of gripes (one of which I've resolved):
1) Battery life: Yes, these smart phones guzzle batteries for breakfast, but this battery for the X10 is nothing more than an appetizer to this phone. I fixed this by purchasing a battery from Mugen Power http://www.mugen-power-batteries.com/sony-ericsson/sony-ericssonxperia-x10.html. I got the 1800mAh one, and it works nicely; however, I've got my eye on the big 3600mAh that comes with its own extended battery cover!
2) Voice recognition and dialing: Oh do I miss the days when I could talk to my Nokia N85 with just a click of a button on my bluetooth earpiece and tell it to call someone. Try doing that on this phone. Right, let's see. touch the voice dial button on the phone, check. Wait.
Generated by Jive SBS on 2011-06-09+01:00 3
ok, now say the name, check. Several names pop up on the screen, and I have to confirm who I want to call, check. Tap the name, check. Whew! But isn't this considered texting while driving? LOL Now I realize that voice dialing is mostly an Android problem, although some newer phones are starting to bypass this issue (e.g. the new Samsungs). If the Android OS didn't support this feature back when the Xperia was developed and released, why couldn't SE resolve this issue by giving this phone hardware to tackle voice dialing? Voice dialing is an extremely important feature to have for drivers. I would have directed the development team to construct a separate hardware and phonebook combination that would have allowed voice dialing, but that's me.

Hi. I m also x10 user. and i have solution abt equilaizer. For use an equilizer in x10 u have to install "Mixzing" application from Anroid market. There is equlizer included in tht player. and tht mp3 player is very nice than anyother player. even mediascap too. and it has widget too so u can easily play songs directly frm screen and much more. so download Mixzing and ENJOY !!

However, its software features are just as impressing. What it adds to the Android universe is a personalized interface, called UX (from User eXperience). Basically, UX combines various entertainment and social media features.
