2007-08-28 15:31:57 So for all the people saying DVD life is fine at 15 minutes or 25 minutes with the DL DVDs, they are wrong. I was looking for a hard drive High Def camera. I purchased the JVC GZ HD7 and took it home. The camera was $1.

Great features, easy to use, excellent pictures, very light & compact, very good battery life. I have yet to find a problem. I chose the DVD format so that I could transport my media without having to carry my camera.

About language setting
The on-screen displays in each local language are used for illustrating the operating procedures. Change the screen language before using your camcorder if necessary (p. 22).
About the marks used in this manual
The operations available depend on the disc used. The following marks are used to indicate the type of disc you can use for a particular operation.
On playing the disc on other devices
You can play back, or format discs recorded with HD (high definition) image quality only on AVCHD format compatible devices. These marks indicate the discs that can be used when recording with HD (high definition) image quality.

About this manual

The images of the LCD screen and the viewfinder used in this manual for illustration purposes are captured using a digital still camera, and therefore may appear different from the actual images of the LCD screen and the viewfinder. Design and specifications of recording media and other accessories are subject to change without notice. Disc in this Operating Guide refers to 8cm DVD discs. The illustrations used on this manual are based on the model HDR-UX7E.
About the Carl Zeiss lens
Your camcorder is equipped with a Carl Zeiss lens, which was developed jointly by Carl Zeiss, in Germany, and Sony Corporation, and produces superior images. It adopts the MTF measurement system for video cameras and offers a quality typical of a Carl Zeiss lens. Also, the lens for your camcorder is T -coated to suppress unwanted reflections and faithfully reproduce colors. MTF= Modulation Transfer Function. The number value indicates the amount of light from a subject coming into the lens.

* When the LCD backlight is on. **HD stands for high definition image quality, and SD stands for standard image quality. On the battery pack Before changing the battery pack, slide the POWER switch to OFF (CHG) and turn off the (Movie) lamp/ (Still) lamp (p. 21). The CHG (charge) lamp flashes during charging, or Battery Info (p. 19) will not be correctly displayed under the following conditions: The battery pack is not attached correctly. The battery pack is damaged. The battery pack is worn-out (For Battery Info only). The power will not be supplied from the battery as long as the AC Adaptor is connected to the DC IN jack of your camcorder, even when the mains lead is disconnected from the wall socket.
* Typical recording time shows the time when you repeat recording start/stop, turning the power on/off and zooming. **HD stands for high definition image quality, and SD stands for standard image quality.
All times measured with recording mode [SP] under the following conditions: Top: When the LCD backlight turns on. Middle: When the LCD backlight turns off. Bottom: When recording with the viewfinder while the LCD panel is closed.
When attaching an optional video light, it is recommended that you use an NP-FH100 battery pack. We do not recommend using an NP-FH30, which only allows short recording and playback times, with your camcorder. On the charging/recording/playback time Times measured when using the camcorder at 25 C (77 F) (10 C to 30 C (50 F to 86 F) is recommended). The recording and playback time will be shorter when you use your camcorder in low temperatures. The recording and playback time will be shorter depending on the conditions under which you use your camcorder. On the AC Adaptor Use the nearby wall socket when using the AC Adaptor. Disconnect the AC Adaptor from the wall socket immediately if any malfunction occurs while using your camcorder. Do not use the AC Adaptor placed in a narrow space, such as between a wall and furniture. Do not short-circuit the DC plug of the AC Adaptor or battery terminal with any metallic objects. This may cause a malfunction. Even if your camcorder is turned off, AC power (mains) is still supplied to it while connected to the wall socket via the AC Adaptor.
Step 3: Turning the power on and setting the date and time
Set the date and time when using this camcorder for the first time. If you do not set the date and time, the [CLOCK SET] screen appears every time you turn on your camcorder or change the POWER switch position.

About the Disc

See page 12 for the details of discs which you can use with your camcorder.

symbol

Hold the disc by its edge while supporting the center hole lightly. Do not touch the recording side (the opposite of the printed side when using a single-sided disc).
Before shooting, be sure to remove dust and fingerprints from the disc with a soft cloth. Otherwise you may not be able to record or play normally in some situations using that disc. When you set the disc in your camcorder, press firmly until it clicks. When the message [C:13:ss] appears on the LCD screen, open the disc cover and set the disc again. Do not attach any adhesive material such as a sticker on the surface of a disc. If you do so, the disc may become unbalanced, and this may cause a malfunction of the disc or your camcorder.
Place the symbol facing outwards. Recording is made on the rear side.
Use of double-sided discs
Double-sided discs allow you to record both sides of a disc. x Recording on the A side Place the disc in your camcorder with the side with the symbol at the center facing outwards until it clicks.
When using a double-sided disc, take care not to smudge the surface with fingerprints. When a double-sided disc is used in your camcorder, recording/playback are performed on that side only. You cannot switch to record on or play back the other side with the disc set to the camcorder. When recording/playback of one side is complete, remove the disc and turn it over to access the other side. Perform the following operations on each side of a double-sided disc:
Finalizing (p. 53) Unfinalizing (p. 61) Formatting (p. 59)

About storage of the battery pack
If the battery pack is not used for a long time, fully charge the battery pack and use it up on your camcorder once a year to maintain proper function. To store the battery pack, remove it from your camcorder and put it in a dry, cool place. To discharge the battery pack on your camcorder completely, touch (SETTINGS) t [GENERAL SET] t [A.SHUT OFF] t [NEVER] on the HOME MENU and leave your camcorder in recording standby until the power goes off (p. 76).
To use the battery pack effectively
Battery pack performance decreases when the surrounding temperature is 10 C (50 F) or below, and the length of time you can use the battery pack becomes shorter. In that case, do one of the following to use the battery pack for a longer time. Put the battery pack in a pocket to warm it up, and insert it in your camcorder right before you start taking shots. Use a large capacity battery pack: NP-FH100 (optional). Frequent use of the LCD screen or a frequent playback, fast forward or rewind operation wears out the battery pack faster. We recommend using a large capacity battery pack: NP-FH100. Be sure to set the POWER switch to OFF (CHG) when not recording or playing back on your camcorder. The battery pack is also consumed when your camcorder is in recording standby or playback pause. Have spare battery packs ready for two or three times the expected recording time, and make trial recordings using a DVD-RW/DVD+RW before making the actual recording. Do not expose the battery pack to water. The battery pack is not water resistant.

About battery life

Battery capacity decreases over time and through repeated use. If decreased usage time between charges becomes significant, it is probably time to replace it with a new one. Each batterys life is governed by storage, operating and environmental conditions.

About the x.v.Color

x.v.Color is a more familiar term for the xvYCC standard proposed by Sony, and is a trademark of Sony. xvYCC is an international standard for color space in video. This standard can express a wider color range than the currently used broadcast standard.
About the remaining battery time indicator
When the power goes off even though the remaining battery time indicator indicates that the battery pack has enough power to operate, charge the battery pack fully again. Remaining battery time will be indicated correctly. Note, however, that the battery indication will not be restored if it is used in high temperatures for a
