Troubleshooting

Should any problem occur with the unit, make the following simple checks to determine whether or not servicing is required. If the problem persists, consult your nearest Sony dealer. The clock flashes AM 12:00 due to a power interruption. The battery is low. Replace the battery. Remove the old battery and install a new one. The radio, buzzer and melody alarm does not sound at the preset alarm time. Has the desired radio, buzzer and melody alarm been activated? (i.e., Does the ALARM A (or B) display light up?) The radio alarm is activated but no sound comes on at the preset alarm time. Has VOLUME been adjusted?

Precautions

Operate the unit on the power source specified in Specifications. The nameplate and important information concerning safety are located on the bottom exterior. To disconnect the power cord (mains lead), pull it out by the plug, not the cord. The unit is not disconnected from the AC power source (mains) as long as it is connected to the wall outlet, even if the unit itself has been turned off. Allow adequate air circulation to prevent internal heat build-up. Do not place the unit on a surface (a rug, blanket, etc.) or near materials (a curtain) that might block the ventilation holes. Should any solid object or liquid fall into the unit, unplug the unit and have it checked by a qualified personnel before operating it any further. About the backup battery

To keep good time, as backup power source, this unit has one CR2032 battery inside of the unit in addition to the house current. The battery keeps the clock and the alarm operating in the event of a power interruption.
When daylight saving time (summer time) begins
The following models employ Automatic Daylight Saving Time/Summer Time adjustment. appears in the display during daylight saving time (summer time). Automatic Daylight Saving Time adjustment is based on local time. Daylight saving time begins at: 2:00 AM on the second Sunday of March. Standard time begins at: 2:00 AM on the first Sunday of November.

Playing the radio

Manual tuning
1 Press RADIO ON/BAND/AUDIO IN to turn

on the radio.

The display shows the band and frequency for a few seconds and then changes back to the current time.
Listening to the sound from a connected optional component (See fig. )
1 Connect the built-in audio cable with the
stereo-miniplug on the rear of the unit to the line output jack or headphones jack on the optional component (e.g., portable music player). 2 Press RADIO ON/BAND/AUDIO IN to turn on the radio. 3 Press RADIO ON/BAND/AUDIO IN repeatedly to select AUDIO IN.
3 Press STATION SELECT/PRESET 1 to 5 to
select the desired wake-up station. 4 Press ENTER.
Two beeps sound and the radio alarm setting is entered.

To stop the alarm

Press RADIO OFF/ALARM RESET to turn off the alarm. The alarm will come on again at the same time the next day. If RADIO OFF/ALARM RESET is not pressed, the alarm sounds continuously for about 60 minutes, and then it will be stop automatically.
Note The wake-up station does not sound at these steps.
Knowing when to replace the battery

Built-in audio cable

When the battery becomes weak, appears in the display. In the event of a power interruption when the battery is weak, current time and alarm functions will be initialized. When the battery is consumed, even if doesnt appear in the display, in the event of a power interruption, alarm and NAP timer buzzer sounds may become extremely small, and the display may become weak. In this case, replace the battery.

Setting the buzzer alarm

To deactivate the alarm
Press ALARM A or B. Alarm time display disappears. Note on alarm in the event of a power interruption In the event of a power interruption, alarm functions work until the battery is empty. However, the following functions differ: Backlight will not light up. When the alarm sound is set to RADIO or MELODY, it will change to BUZZER automatically. If power returns while the alarm sounds, the alarm sounds continuously for about 60 minutes after power returns. The alarm buzzes for about one minute, stops temporarily, and will buzz again after about five minutes if neither SNOOZE/DATE/SLEEP OFF or RADIO OFF/ALARM RESET are pressed while the alarm is buzzing. If the alarm buzzes and stops (either automatically after 1 minute or by pressing SNOOZE/DATE/SLEEP OFF) five times, the alarm is automatically reset in the case of a power interruption. The alarm will buzz for 30 minutes after power is resumed if the power is resumed within 60 minutes from the alarm time. If appears in the display, the alarm will not work in the event of power interruption. Replace the battery if appears.

To cancel Automatic DST/Summer Time adjustment and to set DST/Summer Time display manually
The Automatic DST/Summer Time adjustment can be cancelled. Press and hold DST until a beep sounds while the clock is displayed. auto OFF appears in the display to show that Automatic DST/Summer Time adjustment has been cancelled. The display returns to the clock. Notes The change timing of Automatic DST/Summer Time adjustment employed by the unit (see above) is subjected to variation by circumstances and the law in each country/region. In such a case, cancel the Automatic DST/Summer Time adjustment and set DST display manually as necessary. Customers living in a country/region that does not use the daylight saving time (summer time) must cancel Automatic DST/Summer Time adjustment before using the unit. To activate Automatic DST/Summer Time adjustment again, press and hold DST until a beep sounds. auto On appears in the display to show that Automatic DST/Summer Time adjustment has been activated. The display returns to the clock. To change the display to the daylight saving time (summer time) manually, see To change the display to the daylight saving time (summer time) indication.
3 Use TUNE/TIME SET + or to tune into the

desired station.

The FM channel step is set to 0.1 MHz and the AM channel step is set to 10 kHz. Two beeps sound when the minimum frequency of each band is received during tuning.

When using FM1 or FM2 preset mode, you may listen to the radio on either mode. (See Presetting your favorite station.)
4 Play the optional component connected to the 5 Adjust the volume using VOLUME and the

Adjust the volume so that the sound is not distorted. To turn off the sound from the optional component, press RADIO OFF/ALARM RESET, and then turn off the optional component. Notes Connect the audio cable firmly to prevent a malfunction. Keep digital music players away from the speakers. If you increase the volume too much, loud sound may occurs when switching to the radio. Confirm the volume, when you remove the connected component from this unit to listen by headphones. Otherwise, high volume may affect your hearing. AUDIO IN cannot be set for the alarm sound.

AC power cord

Replace the battery with a Sony CR2032 lithium battery. Use of another battery may present a risk of fire or explosion.

select the desired buzzer sound.
4 Adjust volume using VOLUME.
Installing and replacing the backup battery
1 Keep the AC plug connected to the AC outlet,
remove the screw that secures the battery compartment at the bottom of the unit using a screwdriver, and pull the battery compartment marked PULL. (See fig. -) 2 Insert a new battery in the battery compartment with the side facing up.
To remove the battery from the battery compartment, push it out from the side marked PUSH. (See fig. -)
To turn off the radio, press RADIO OFF/ALARM RESET. To check the station being received, press TUNE/TIME SET + or or RADIO ON/BAND/AUDIO IN lightly. The display shows the band and frequency for a few seconds and then changes back to the current time.

3 Press ENTER.

Presetting your favorite station

Preset tuning

You can preset up to 10 stations in FM (5 stations in FM1, 5 stations in FM2), and 5 stations in AM.
There is a tactile dot beside VOLUME to show the direction to turn up the volume. A tactile dot also on TUNE/TIME SET + and STATION SELECT/PRESET 3 button.
3 Insert the battery compartment back into the
unit and secure it with the screw. (See fig. -) 4 When you are replacing the battery, press RADIO ON/BAND/AUDIO IN to turn indicator off in the display.

Setting the alarm

The dual alarm function allows you to set two alarm programs (ALARM A and ALARM B). The alarm time can be set for each program and the alarm sound is selectable from RADIO, BUZZER and MELODY. Notes Before setting the alarm, make sure to set the clock. (See Setting the clock and date.) The factory setting alarm time is PM 12:00. To set the radio alarm, first preset your favorite station and adjust the volume. (See Presetting your favorite station.) While setting the alarm, you must perform each step within 65 seconds, or the alarm setting mode will be cancelled.

Using the NAP timer (count down timer)
The NAP timer sounds the buzzer after a preset time duration. Press NAP repeatedly until the desired minutes appears. Each press changes the display as follows:

Presetting a station

1 Follow steps 1 to 4 in Playing the radio and
manually tune into the station you wish to preset. 2 Hold down the desired STATION SELECT/ PRESET 1 to 5 button until you hear two beeps.
Example: o preset AM kHz onto preset 2 T button.
Note If you replace the battery, do not disconnect AC plug from AC outlet. Otherwise, the 100 year calendar, current time, alarm and station presets will be initialized. NOTES ON THE LITHIUM BATTERY Keep the lithium battery out of the reach of children. Should the battery be swallowed, immediately consult a doctor. Wipe the battery with a dry cloth to assure good contact. Be sure to observe the correct polarity when installing the battery. Do not hold the battery with metallic tweezers, otherwise a short-circuit may occur. Battery Warning When the unit will be left unplugged for a long time, remove the battery to avoid undue battery discharge and damage to the unit from battery leakage.

The year will start to flash in the display.
Two short beeps sound when the display returns to 10. NAP and the NAP time appear for about 4 seconds. The NAP timer starts counting down. When the selected NAP time occurs, the buzzer comes on, and NAP in the display flashes. The buzzer is turned off automatically after about 60 minutes.

To stop the NAP timer

Press NAP or RADIO OFF/ALARM RESET to turn off the buzzer.
Setting the clock for the first time
This unit is preset to the current date and time at the factory, and is powered by the back up battery. All you need to do the first time is just plug it in and select your time zone.
After setting the time, two short beeps sound and the clock starts from 0 seconds. Pressing and holding TUNE/TIME SET + or changes the year, month or day rapidly. When setting the current time, time changes rapidly by 1 minute-increments up to 10 minutes, and then by 10 minute-increments. While setting the clock, you must perform each step within 65 seconds, or the clock setting mode will be cancelled. The 100 year calendar is installed in this unit (January 1, 2008 - December 31, 2107). When the date is set, a day of the week is automatically displayed. Su = Sunday, Mo = Monday, Tu = Tuesday, We = Wednesday, Th = Thursday, Fr = Friday, Sa = Saturday

To set the alarm

1 Press ALARM A or B until a beep sounds.
To deactivate the NAP Timer
Press NAP. NAP disappears from the display. Note on NAP time in the event of a power interruption In the event of a power interruption, the NAP timer continues to work until the battery is empty. However the following functions differ: Backlight will not light up. Buzzer will stop automatically after 1 minute. If the event of a power interruption happens when the buzzer sounds, it will sound 1 minute still, then stop automatically. If appears in the display, the buzzer will not work in the event of power interruption. Replace the battery if appears.
The hour flashes in the display. Example: Display window when you set alarm A (radio alarm mode).
The display shows the frequency for a few seconds and then changes back to the current time. The preset button number will remain. To preset another station, repeat these steps. To change the preset station, tune into the desired station and hold down the STATION SELECT/ PRESET 1 to 5 button until you hear two beeps. The new station will replace the previous station on the preset button.
Note The volume cannot be set for the melody alarm. To cancel the alarm setting mode, press RADIO OFF/ ALARM RESET. CLOCK, DST and TIME ZONE are unavailable while the alarm sounds or snooze function is turned on.

To display the year and date
Press SNOOZE/DATE/SLEEP OFF once for the date, and within about 3 seconds press it again for the year. The display shows the date or year for about 3 seconds and then changes back to the current time. If you connect the AC plug to AC outlet while this unit is powered from the backup power source, the current date and time appears in the following order. (It is the same as when the unit is powered on after power failure.) month and date (about 1 second) year (about 1 second) current time
Tuning into a preset station
on the radio. 2 Press STATION SELECT/PRESET 1 to 5 where the desired station is stored. 3 Adjust volume using VOLUME.

To set the hour rapidly, hold down TUNE/TIME SET + or. A beep sounds and the minute flashes in the display. A beep sounds and the alarm time setting is entered.

Setting the sleep timer

You can fall asleep to the radio using the built-in sleep timer that turns off the radio automatically after a preset duration. Press SLEEP. The radio turns on. You can set the sleep timer to a duration of 90, 60, 30, or 15 minutes. Each press changes the display as follows:
After a few seconds, the display will return to the current time but the preset button number will remain.
4 Repeat step 2 to set the minute.
5 Press TUNE/TIME SET + or repeatedly until
the desired alarm mode flashes.
You can choose from RADIO, BUZZER and MELODY for the mode. Set the alarm mode as follows: - RADIO: see Setting the radio alarm. - BUZZER: see Setting the buzzer alarm. - MELODY: see Setting the melody alarm. Note AUDIO IN cannot be set for the alarm sound.

To change the display to the daylight saving time (summer time) indication
Change the daylight saving time (summer time) adjustment setting according to the following procedures if you have cancelled the Automatic DST/Summer Time adjustment. Press DST. appears in the display and the time indication changes to daylight saving time (summer time). To deactivate the daylight saving time (summer time) adjustment, press DST again.

Improving the reception

FM: The AC power cord functions as an FM antenna. Extend the AC power cord fully to increase reception sensitivity.

Setting the radio alarm

Notes If a second alarm sounds during a first (or the snooze function is active), the second alarm takes priority. If the same time is set for both alarms (ALARM A and B), ALARM A takes priority. The alarm function works as usual at the beginning and end day of the daylight saving time (summer time). While the Automatic DST/Summer Time adjustment is set, as a result, if the alarm is set at a time skipped when the daylight saving time (summer time) begins, the alarm is skipped, or if the alarm is set at a time overlapped when the daylight saving time (summer time) ends, the alarm sounds twice.
Two beeps sound when the display returns to 90. The radio will play for the duration you set, then shut off.

AM: Rotate the unit horizontally for optimum reception. A ferrite bar AM antenna is built into the unit. Example: The RADIO, preset number and band flash, and the frequency of the preset station is showed in the display.
To doze for a few more minutes
Press SNOOZE/DATE/SLEEP OFF. The sound turns off but will automatically come on again after about 10 minutes. Each time you press SNOOZE/ DATE/SLEEP OFF, the snooze time changes as follows: The maximum snooze time is 60 minutes. The display shows the snooze time for about 4 seconds and returns to show the current time. When you press SNOOZE/DATE/SLEEP OFF after the current time appears, the snooze time starts from 10 minutes again. Even in the event of a power interruption, the snooze function continues to work as the above.
To turn off the radio before the preset time
Press RADIO OFF/ALARM RESET or SNOOZE/DATE/ SLEEP OFF.
To use both sleep timer and alarm
You can fall asleep to the radio and also be awakened by the radio, buzzer or melody alarm at the preset time.

Setting the brightness of the display
