The shift to digital photography has freed camera manufacturers from design constraints, giving rise to a new generation of cameras that will appeal to the style conscious.

rom their earliest days, cameras have been shaped by the need to hold a cylindrical lens against a flat strip of film. The shift to digital electronics didnt change the nature of optics, but it did relax the constraints on body design. Manufacturers are now finally taking full advantage of that new freedom. One of the most interesting new categories thats opened up is the mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The name says it all. As with an SLR, lenses can be swapped. But through-the-lens viewing is provided not optically, by a mirror and prism, but by electronics. This allows for a design thats very light and compact, with new features as a bonus. For composing shots, these cameras offer either an electronic viewfinder or larger tiltable LCD display, both of which provide an enhanced view: magnified for fine focusing or brightened in dim light. The Sony a NEX-5 ($750, with a 16mm lens) is a great example of an interchangeable lens camera. It has still got the familiar lens barrel and flat back, but reduced to a minimalist geometrical form. With a larger lens, such as Sonys SEL18200 11X zoom ($950), the small rectangular body seems almost like an afterthought. In fact, its size and weight are about half those of a conventional SLR. Yet image quality remains high, thanks to an APS HD CMOS digital sensor, similar to those used in most Sony DSLRs. Other manufacturers have their own lightweight mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras, such as the Olympus PEN E-PL2 or Panasonic Lumix G Micro System. But when it comes to physical design, Sony takes the boldest approach. Further additions to the a NEX line are expected this year.
