Other car manufacturers come to Sweden for final car testing under harsh and capricious conditions. For us its home. Our own proving ground Hllered with its 34 miles of test tracks includes different road types from all over the world. Here we scrutinize our cars ability to support their drivers in all imaginable and unimaginable situations during thousands of test miles not to mention the distances driven on ordinary Swedish roads.
We already know what we want to achieve: no accidents. By applying a holistic approach which considers the driver and the vehicle as well as the infrastructure, we can realize a future where cars interact with other cars, the road and the traffic-control systems. For example, this includes cars that can brake and steer automatically, if needed. This makes it possible to design cars in completely new ways to protect and preserve life.
Looking after people and the environment is an indispensable part of the Volvo soul. For more than 80 years weve been driven by a passion for safety. We are environmental pioneers in the car industry, and have always employed a healthy respect for our limited resources and environmental responsibilities. Consequently, we aim to create new solutions that help halt climate change and improve the environment both inside and outside the car. Our goal is crystal clear: to build cars that leave a minimal impact on the environment. We dont think that there is just one way to tackle the environmental issues. We think there are many solutions and we must explore all the options. Thats why were developing new eco-technologies. DRIVe captures all our environmental work from production to recycling and represents our commitment and continued efforts for sustainable mobility.
We must minimize the emissions of fossil CO2 (which leads to climate change) and increase the energy efficiency of our cars. Continuous improvements within aerodynamics, rolling resistance, lightweight materials and drive train technology help us lower fuel consumption. In our new Hybrid technology center in Gteborg, we are developing the next generation power trains for future Volvos.
If you drive miles a year, you spend at least 24 hours a month in your car. We also know that more and more people are suffering from asthma and allergies. To ensure a healthy interior for you and your passengers, we test upholsteries and interiors in the Volvo Environmental Laboratory in Sweden. All upholstery materials and interior textiles also comply with Oeko-Tex Standard 100 an international benchmark for human ecological safety of textiles. All leathers are chromium-free theyre tanned using vegetable or synthetic substances instead of chromium. Whats more, some panel trims are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified to ensure the wood comes from responsibly managed forests.
Already from the early stages of conception weve considered our cars environmental impact: from design and manufacturing to useful life and recycling. For example, weve seen to that our factories are powered by wind and hydro power and use energy and water responsibly. Our production facilities are certified under the global environmental standard ISO 14001, and we make sure that all our major suppliers meet our strict environmental standards. At the end of its useful life, every Volvo is designed to be 85% recyclable. We also offer re-manufactured exchange parts which substantially reduces the need for raw materials and energy.

At the core of every car we make, state-of-the-art technology helps support the driver and protect the occupants. And to further enhance the Volvo safety experience, theres a range of supplementary safety technology for more performance and peace of mind.
SAFETY Preventive
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Distance Alert* Helping the driver to keep a safe distance from vehicles in front at speeds over 20 mph, ACC is a supportive partner for a more relaxed driving experience on long journeys and motorways. Just select the desired speed and the minimum time gap to the vehicle in front. When the radar sensor detects a slower vehicle in front, the speed automatically adapts to that vehicle. And when the road is clear, the car resumes the selected speed. If ACC is disengaged and a vehicle in front comes too close, Distance Alert activates a red warning light in the lower section of the windscreen to help you keep a proper distance.
The alarm has been triggered.
Personal Car Communicator (PCC)* The optional PCC is an advanced remote control that combines keyless drive with two-way communication with your Volvo. Keep the PCC with you and the car unlocks automatically as you pull the door handle. Start the engine by pressing a button on the dash, lock the car by pressing a button in the door handle. Later in the day, if youre wondering whether youve locked the car, PCC can remind you; no matter where you are. On your return to the car within a radius of 200 to 300 feet pressing the PCC information button will give you a current report on its status. If the alarm has been activated, the onboard heartbeat sensor will give you advanced warning if theres somebody in your car and an opportunity to evaluate the situation safely.
Power retractable door mirrors with ground lighting* At the touch of a button, these door mirrors can be folded flat against the car where they are less likely to get damaged after youve parked. They also fold or unfold automatically every time you lock or unlock the car. The integrated ground lighting is activated with the remote control or with the PCC. Beyond enhancing security to and from your car at night, this is also convenient when getting in and out.
* Included with the optional Blind Spot Information System BLIS
Approach and Home Safe Lighting Activated with the remote control or Personal Car Communicator, Approach Lighting provides a warm reception on a dark night. This consists of interior and side lights ground lighting too, if you choose it. Home Safe Lighting is activated with the headlight stalk as you leave the car and it provides a similar courtesy when exiting your car. This feature includes a dipped beam from the headlight to accompany you to your door.
HomeLink With buttons integrated in the sun visor, HomeLink allows you to operate remote controlled home appliances such as garage door, home alarm and exterior lighting without leaving the car.
HomeLink is a registered trademark of Johnson Controls Technology Company. * Included in the optional Premium Package on 3.2, standard on R-D ESIGN
Lockable floor To further foil smash and grab burglaries, the closed tailgate just by the function of its design overlaps and seals the compartment hidden under the cargo floor. To keep this private storage area inaccessible to other users of the car, e.g., valet parking, you can include the tailgate when setting your private locking preferences.

file:///K|/ownersdocs/2001/2001_V70/01v70_06b.htm (2 of 11)12/30/2006 3:51:03 PM
All Wheel Drive cars must not be towed with one of the axles raised or with the wheels on the ground. Only front wheel drive cars may be towed in either of these ways. Flat bed equipment is the only way to tow cars with All Wheel Drive and is recommended for cars with front wheel drive.
Towing cars with All Wheel Drive (AWD)
Cars equipped with All Wheel Drive must not be towed or transported with only one of the axles raised or with all four wheels on the ground (see illustrations above). Towing or transporting the car incorrectly will damage the viscous coupling which distributes power between the front and rear drive wheels. Only use flat bed equipment.
Towing cars with front wheel drive
Volvo recommends the use of flat bed equipment. If wheel lift equipment must be used, please use extreme caution to help avoid damage to the car. In this case, the car should be towed with the rear wheels on the ground if at all possible. If it is absolutely necessary to tow the vehicle with the front wheels on the ground, please refer to the towing information on the previous page.
CAUTION:
The car must not be driven with wheels of different dimensions/ specifications or with a spare tire other than the one that came with the car. The use of different size wheels can seriously damage your
file:///K|/ownersdocs/2001/2001_V70/01v70_06b.htm (3 of 11)12/30/2006 3:51:03 PM
car's transmission. q Sling-type equipment applied at the front will damage radiator and air conditioning lines. q It is equally important not to use sling-type equipment at the rear or apply lifting equipment inside the rear wheels; serious damage to the rear axle may result. q If the car is being towed on a flat bed truck, the towing eyelets must not be used to secure the car on the flat bed. Consult the tow truck operator.
Do not use the towing eyelets to pull the car up onto a flat bed tow truck.
pg. 92 Towing a trailer
When preparing for trailer towing, observe the following:
Volvo recommends the use of Volvo trailer hitches which are specially designed for the car. q Maximum trailer weight recommended by Volvo is: Trailers without brakes: 1100 lbs (500 kg) Trailers with brakes: 3300 lbs (1,500 kg), Observe the legal requirements of the state/province in which the vehicles are registered. q All Volvo models are equipped with energy-absorbing shock-mounted bumpers. Trailer hitch installation should not interfere with the proper operation of this bumper system. Trailer towing does not normally present any particular problems, but take into consideration: q Increase tire pressure to recommended full. See section "Wheels and tires". q When your car is new, avoid towing heavy trailers during the first 620 miles (1000 km). q Recommended hitch tongue load is: Trailer weights below 2,650 lbs (1,200 kg) - 110 lbs (50 kg) Trailer weights above 2,650 lbs (1,200 kg) - 165 lbs (75 kg) q Maximum speed when towing a trailer: 50 mph (80 km/h). q Engine and transmission are subject to increased loads. Therefore, engine coolant temperature should be closely watched when driving in hot climates or hilly terrain. Use a lower gear and turn off the air conditioner if the temperature gauge needle enters the red range. q If the automatic transmission begins to overheat, a message will be displayed in the text window. q Avoid overload and other abusive operation. q Hauling a trailer affects handling, durability, and economy. q It is necessary to balance trailer brakes with the towing vehicle brakes to provide a safe stop (check and observe state/local regulations). q Do not connect the trailer's brake system directly to the vehicle's brake system. q More frequent vehicle maintenance is required. q Remove the ball and drawbar assembly when the hitch is not being used.
file:///K|/ownersdocs/2001/2001_V70/01v70_06b.htm (4 of 11)12/30/2006 3:51:03 PM
Volvo recommends the use of synthetic engine oil when towing a trailer over long distances or in mountainous areas. WARNING! Bumper-attached trailer hitches must not be used on Volvo's, nor should safety chains be attached to the bumper. q Trailer hitches attaching to the vehicle rear axle must not be used. q Never connect a trailer's hydraulic brake system directly to the vehicle brake system, nor a trailer's lighting system directly to the vehicle lighting system. Consult your nearest authorized Volvo retailer for correct installation. q When towing a trailer, the trailer's safety wire must be correctly fastened to the hole or hook provided in the trailer hitch on the car. The safety wire should never be fastened to or wound around the drawbar ball.

pg. 124 Fuel/emissions systems
Fuel system
The fuel system continually compensates for variation in engine load, speed and temperature. A mass air flow sensor continuously measures the inducted air and makes rapid adjustments for changes in air temperature and density, to balance fuel economy, emissions, and engine power requirements.
Heated oxygen sensor
This is an emission control system designed to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy. The heated oxygen sensor monitors the composition of the exhaust gases leaving the engine. The exhaust gas analysis is fed into an electronic module. This adjusts the air/fuel ratio to improve combustion and reduce the three major pollutants (hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and oxides of nitrogen (NOx)) via a three-way catalytic converter.
Crankcase ventilation
The engine is provided with positive crankcase ventilation which prevents crankcase gases from being released into the atmosphere. Instead, the crankcase gases are routed to the intake manifold and cylinders.
Prem-Air
On the surface of the radiator in the engine compartment, there is a special coating called Prem-Air. Prem-Air works as a catalytic converter, converting most of the ozone passing through the radiator into oxygen, thereby reducing harmful ground-level ozone.
Evaporative control system
The car is equipped with an evaporative control system, which prevents gasoline vapor from being released into the atmosphere. The system consists of a fuel tank with filler pipe and cap, two rollover valves, a Fill Limit Vent Valve (FLVV), vapor vent lines, a charcoal canister, a purge line, and a purge control valve and engine connections. In addition, there is a pressure sensor connected to the fuel tank and a filter-protected Canister Close Valve (CCV) on the atmospheric side of the canister, for system diagnosis. The gasoline vapor is channeled through the rollover valves and the FLVV via the vapor vent lines into the charcoal canister, where it is stored. When the engine is started, the gasoline vapor is drawn from the charcoal canister to the engine's air intake system and into the combustion process.

Battery maintenance
The battery in your car is located under the floor of the cargo area. Driving habits and conditions, climate, the number of starts, etc. all affect the service life and function of the battery. In order for your battery to perform satisfactorily, keep the following in mind: Check the fluid level in each cell in the battery every 6 months or every 7,500 * miles (12,000 km). The fluid should be at the level shown in the illustration above (A**). Use a screwdriver to open the caps and a flashlight to inspect the level. q If necessary, add distilled water. The level should never be above the indicator (A). q The fluid level should be checked if the battery has been recharged. q After inspection, be sure the cap over each battery cell is securely in place. q Check that the battery cables are correctly connected and properly tightened. q Never disconnect the battery when the engine is running, for example when changing the battery. q The battery should be disconnected from the vehicle when a battery charger is used directly on the battery. However, if the battery is being charged via the connecting points in the engine compartment (see page 95), the battery must be connected.
* More frequently in warm climates. ** The level indicator inside the battery could be designed in various ways. See illustration above!
