As far as drawing digitally goes, this is by far the best thing out there. When compared to the 6x8 wacom tablet. Absolutely brilliant. I am using the display under MacOSX. | This device its about....10=15% better in feel than a tablet. It will not solve your inability to make quality marks. I have worked on wacom tablets for 10+ years, worked in design for 13+, doing autonmotive and toy design. This is my first Wacom. It is much nicer than my off-market tablet, and rightfully so, but I suppose I expected more luxury out of the price. | |

UNPACKING AND MOUNTING THE CINTIQ PEN DISPLAY
Remove any packing materials from the back of the display unit and cabling. To mount Cintiq on the stand:
Make sure the stand is stable on your desktop or other work surface and will not tip or fall when Cintiq is mounted on it. Securely grasp Cintiq with both hands so that the display faces toward you, with the power switch and LEDs located at the top. Align Cintiq parallel to the front of the stand so that the bearing hub is located between the V-shaped upper edges of the stands bearing recess. See A (The V-shaped edges of the stand will serve as a guide for positioning the bearing hub.) With the back of Cintiq resting against the stand, lower Cintiq until the bearing hub rests securely in the bearing recess of the stand. See B on the following page. The display unit will be held in place by gravity; there will be no audible snap that indicates a mechanical lock.
Note: If you do not need to rotate the Cintiq pen display, you may want to secure it to the stand with the rotation lock screws. For information on this, see Optional display congurations on page 56. To learn about other mounting options, see Using an alternate mount or stand on page 57.

WARNING When operating the incline adjustment levers, Cintiq must be mounted on the stand with the stand feet resting on a stable, at surface. The stand is spring-loaded and can snap back quickly, causing injury or damage if not operated properly.
After the display unit has been mounted on the stand, remove the foam blocks that lock the adjustment levers in place. Save these blocks with the other packaging materials; you will need them if in the future you want to ship Cintiq.
ADJUSTING THE DISPLAY INCLINE
To adjust the display incline, face the front of the Cintiq pen display and grasp it on the left and right side at approximately the same height as the Cintiq stand adjustment levers. Use your ngertips to gently pull the incline adjustment levers toward the display unit; this will release the stands clutch mechanism. Tilt the display to adjust the incline setting.
To lower Cintiq, pull the left incline adjustment lever toward Cintiq and gently lower Cintiq to the desired incline angle. Release the lever to lock the stand in place. To raise Cintiq, pull the right incline adjustment lever toward Cintiq and gently raise Cintiq to the desired incline angle. Release the lever to lock the stand in place.

INSTALLATION
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Before installing Cintiq, make sure your computer meets the following minimum system requirements:
PC. Windows Vista, Vista x64, XP, XP x64, or 2000. DVI or VGA video connector, available USB port, and CD-ROM drive. Macintosh. OS X, v10.3.9 or greater. DVI or VGA video connector, available USB port, and CD-ROM drive. ADC connectors require an ADC to DVI-I adapter, not included.
Cintiq supports both digital (DVI) and analog (VGA) video signals. If updating your video card, complete the video card hardware and software installation before connecting Cintiq. If you have another display that is compatible with your video card, you can connect that display to the card in order to verify the video card is operating correctly. Using the VGA to DVI-I adapter, you can connect Cintiq to a VGA video card. However, connecting Cintiq to a DVI video card generally results in optimum performance.
Notes: Cintiq can be used alone or with another display, such as a CRT monitor or LCD projector. To use Cintiq with another display, you will need two video cards or a video card with dual output. Depending on the capabilities of your video card and operating system, you may be able to set up Cintiq as a mirrored, extended, or independent display. Refer to your video card documentation for more information on its capabilities. When you are working with more than one display, Cintiq will map to the displays based upon how your system is congured. By default, if you are in mirror mode, the pen tablet will map to the entire space on each display. Please refer to your hardware and operating system documentation for details on conguring your computer and operating system for use with multiple displays. A display toggle function is available for use with multiple display systems. This enables you to toggle the screen cursor between the Cintiq pen display and your other displays. For more information, see Using ExpressKeys on page 28.
There are two primary steps to the installation process:
Step 1: display installation Step 2: pen tablet installation
Follow ALL installation instructions carefully.

APPENDIX
CARING FOR CINTIQ
Keep the Grip Pen and your Cintiq LCD screen surface clean. Dust and dirt particles can stick to the pen and cause excessive wear to the display screen surface. Regular cleaning will help to prolong the life of your LCD screen surface and pen. Keep Cintiq, the Cintiq stand, and the Grip Pen in a clean, dry place and avoid extremes in temperature. Room temperature is best. Cintiq, the Cintiq stand, and the Grip Pen are not made to come apart (except where specically indicated for removal and replacement of the pens DuoSwitch). Taking apart the product will void your warranty. Important: Take care never to spill liquids onto the pen display or pen. Be especially careful of getting the display, tablet ExpressKeys, Touch Strips, or pen buttons, tip, and eraser wet they contain sensitive electronic parts that will fail if liquids enter them.
CLEANING
To clean the Cintiq casing, the Cintiq display stand, or the Grip Pen, use a soft, damp cloth; you can also dampen the cloth using a very mild soap diluted with water. Do not use paint thinner, benzine, alcohol, or other solvents to clean the unit casing or pen. To clean the display screen, use an anti-static cloth or a slightly damp cloth. When cleaning, apply only a light amount of pressure to the display screen and do not make the surface wet. Do not use detergent to clean the display screen; this may damage the coating on the screen. Please note that damage of this kind is not covered by the manufacturers warranty.
Appendix Page 54
Cintiq21UX_Manual.fm Page 55 Monday, November 5, 2007 10:27 AM
REPLACING THE PEN TIP
The pen tip (nib) will wear with normal use. Excessive pressure will cause the nib to wear sooner. A worn nib may damage the coating on the Cintiq display screen. To avoid this, periodic tip replacement is recommended. When the nib gets too short or develops a sharp edge, replace it with one of the extra nibs that came with the pen.
To remove the old nib: Clasp it with a Wacom nib removal tool, pair of tweezers, needle-nosed plier, or similar instrument and pull the old nib straight out of the pen.
To insert a new nib: Slide it straight into the barrel of the pen. Firmly push the nib until it stops. The new nib will slide into the correct position.
WARNING Prevent children from swallowing the pen tip or side switch. The pen tip (nib) or side switch may accidentally be pulled out if children are biting on them.
Important: When the pen is not in use, place it in the pen stand, the pen holder, or lay it at on your desk. To maintain the sensitivity of your pen, do not store the tool in a container where it will rest on its tip or eraser.

OPTIONAL DISPLAY CONFIGURATIONS
After mounting the pen display unit on the Cintiq stand, you can rotate the pen display tablet to a variety of positions. If you do not plan to rotate the Cintiq and want to fasten it more securely to the stand, you can install the rotation lock screws as shown below. To lock Cintiq to the display stand:
Rotate the pen display to the standard landscape position (with the power switch located at the top of the unit). Two holes in the stand will line up with two screw holes on the Cintiq unit. Use a Phillips-head screw driver to insert the lock screws and hand-tighten them.
CAUTION Avoid placing excess physical pressure on the Cintiq stand; doing so can damage the stand.

USING AN ALTERNATE MOUNT OR STAND
Cintiq can be attached to any mount arm or stand conforming to the VESA 100 standard. Mounting screws that are 4 mm wide with a 0.7 mm pitch (M4 Regular), with a screw clearance depth from mm are required. To attach Cintiq to a VESA 100 mounting platform: 1. Turn off your computer and power off Cintiq. Then disconnect all cables from between the unit and your computer. 2. Remove Cintiq from its stand and place it face down on a at, soft surface (such as a cloth spread across a desktop). 3. Remove the bearing hub by unscrewing the four bearing hub attachment screws. Then carefully separate the bearing halves and remove the bearing stopper to free up the cabling. Take care not to lose the small bearing stopper found within the inner groove of one of the hub sections.

Sesame Workshop Discovers Creative Control, Improved Productivity
Working directly on screen provides a more intimate and creative experience. You feel as if youre actually retouching a physical photograph. ark Magner M Design Director
ILLUSTRATION AND PHOTOGRAPHY
How does the design staff at Sesame Workshop handle such a busy workflow? The Muppets, lots of creative talent, discipline, a sense of humor and a little help from Wacoms Cintiq interactive pen display.
When Sesame Street launched as a childrens television show in 1969, no one could have predicted what a worldwide phenomenon it would become. Inspired by Jim Henson, Big Bird, Grover and dozens of other Sesame Street Muppet characters now reach children in more than 140 countries through all forms of media, including television, books, magazines, home video and the Internet. Overseeing the production of all content both foreign and domestic is Sesame Workshop (www.sesameworkshop.org), a nonprofit educational organization making a meaningful difference in the lives of children worldwide by addressing their critical developmental needs. As one of several Creative Directors at Sesame Workshop, Nancy Stevenson specializes in character graphics for licensing, marketing, interactive media, web and community outreach. She and her colleagues in the Creative Services Department are responsible for translating the look of actual 3D puppets into 2D images, the blue-lining of book illustrations, as well as photo shoots and editing photography for video packaging and point of purchase. Most of their work involves vector art using Adobe Illustrator , as well as Photoshop, InDesign and SketchBook Pro.

on the Cintiq is fantastic, he says. Working directly on screen provides a more intimate and creative experience. You feel as if youre actually retouching a physical photograph. Other designers had similar reactions, including Evan Cheng, Art Director for International and Domestic Publishing, who oversees blue-line corrections of freelance illustrations. I would go through and actually draw on tracing paper over the illustrations to correct the artwork and make sure the characters were on model and that the perspective worked, he says. But its much faster with the Cintiq. Plus, youre not smearing blue-lines you already drew, because its digital. The Cintiqs are easily recouping their investment. Even though Sesame Workshop is a nonprofit, our ROI with the Cintiqs is increased productivity and workflow benefits, says Stevenson. Artists familiar with the Cintiq can whip through blue-lines and concept sketches. Id say it takes half the time it would take to get tracing paper out, sketch with a blue pencil, and then scan to send files to partners. Because of the considerable productivity gains the Cintiq has delivered, theres no question it has found a permanent home at Sesame Workshop playing a key role in shaping beloved characters such as Elmo, Big Bird, Grover and Oscar The Grouch for new generations of children. As Cookie Monster would say, Kowabunga! For information about how Sesame Workshop is making a difference in the lives of children all over the world, go to www.sesameworkshop.org.
A s an editing and retouching tool Wacoms Cintiq 21UX has no match, delivering astounding control and productivity to virtually any professional creator of digital content. The workload at Sesame Workshop grows with each new international co-production that requires localized artwork and character interpretations. Although designers had Wacom Intuos3 tablets, their toolset also included traditional blue pencils and tracing paper. To leap ahead of the technology curve and boost productivity, Sesame Workshop wanted to upgrade to a state-of-the-art platform.
In order to emulate the textures, we need to give the fur and feathers a specific thin-to-thick shaped line. The only way to do this efficiently is with the pressure sensitive Wacom pen. Nancy Stevenson Creative Director
The solution presented itself at a trade show, where designers saw Wacoms Cintiq 21UX LCD display. The Cintiqs advanced direct pen-on-screen image editing and sketching capabilities were exactly what they needed. Half the design staff is now using Cintiqs, doubling the speed of many tasks and providing new creative techniques. Drawing fur and feathers is much easier with the Cintiq, Stevenson says. In order to emulate the textures, we need to give the fur and feathers a specific thin-to-thick shaped line, she says. The only way to do this efficiently is with the pressure-sensitive Wacom pen. Otherwise, it takes hours or even days to tweak and pull anchor points to achieve that look. Editing and retouching photography directly on screen with the Cintiq 21UX LCD was a revelation to Mark Magner, Sesame Workshops Design Director for home video covers, package design and point of purchase materials. Previously working on a Wacom Intuos3 pen tablet, Magner found the Cintiq considerably simplified his process. Editing photographs

The Cintiq 21UX interactive pen display provides the best-of-class pen experience for working directly on the screen. It combines the advantages of a large-format LCD monitor with the control, comfort, and productivity of Wacom's most sophisticated patented cordless, battery-free pen technology. With a 21.3" TFT diagonal display, the Cintiq 21UX delivers a highly sensitive pen-on-screen experience and a generous active area for working directly on large images, concepts, and designs in the most natural way possible. Working directly with the pen on screen is a natural motion that gives you an unprecedented degree of control and allows you to take advantage of natural hand-eye coordination, helping you work more intuitively and noticeably faster. The display's completely flat surface allows the hand and pen to glide over the surface of the Cintiq without bumping into any bezels or borders. A dynamically-adjustable stand allows you to rotate the display up to 180° in each direction, incline the display from 10° to 65°, and even removes it for comfortable lap use. Rear roller feet make the incline adjustments easy; the result is freedom to adjust the interactive display to positions that work for you. Strategically-placed ExpressKeys and touch strips are programmable, allowing you to customize your Cintiq to your needs. The ExpressKeys are easily accessible on either side of the display and provide quick access to keyboard shortcuts, modifier keys, and functions that minimize dependence on the keyboard for uninterrupted work sessions. Finger-sensitive touch strips are located on either side of the display for easy zooming, scrolling, or making tool adjustments without taking focus away from the pen tip.
