Soavo-900SW Subwoofer
Soavo-900SW Concept In broad terms, music can be divided into two parts one part with sound and the other without. The silent moment while waiting for a sound explosion to come, or the pulse after a beautiful reverberation, are created by a combination of the two parts, both of which play an essential role in providing musical pleasure. The designers of the Soavo-900SW took the bold step of emphasizing not only the sound, but also the spaces in between. By being conscious of the intervals between the sounds, they aimed to express the depth and spaciousness of the music more effectively. Furthermore, the Soavo-900SW meets the challenge of providing an ideal balance between tight sounds (with crisp, fast attack) and deep sounds (with a spacious feeling). Although these two types of sounds, by definition, tend to oppose each other, this subwoofer is capable of representing the tone intervals of all kinds of sounds, adding an ideally balanced flavour to the music. Just as a seasoning enhances but does not obscure the flavour of food, the Soavo-900SW enhances the musical expression of the performers without interfering with the main speakers. Finally, the enjoyment derived from the Soavo-900SW is not restricted to your ears with it's impressive power it lets you feel the music, too. Designed for extremely accurate music reproduction, the Soavo-900SW subwoofer proudly takes its place in Yamahas Soavo Series. POWERFUL, ACCURATE SOUND Advanced YST II Yamaha's Advanced YST II (Yamaha Active Servo Technology II) combines negativeimpedance and constant-current principles to drive the speaker cone with extremely tighter control. Using Advanced Negative Impedance Converter (ANIC) circuits, this system dynamically optimizes effective speaker impedance to maintain excellent linearity. This means more stable and accurate low range response, not to mention higher sound pressure levels. This means more stable and accurate low range response, higher sound pressure levels, and the ability to reproduce clear bass without muddiness. High Performance Driver The 25cm (10) cone driver uses a new Yamaha-developed material consisting of paper with a blend of carbon fibers and aramid fibers. Its extreme stiffness and extra-long stroke prevent distortion from occurring even during large, deep bursts of sound. A large, powerful magnetic circuit also contributes to the drivers fast response. The unit is firmly supported by a strong diecast aluminium frame.
entire cabinet behaves as a single unit. This improves low frequency response and reduces unwanted vibration. A thick baffle (37mm; 11/2) also minimizes vibration, adding to the overall benefits of the stiff cabinet construction. Birch Veneer Cabinet with Open-Pore Finish Birch is an acoustically excellent material that is used in Yamaha pianos. Yamahas long decades of woodworking expertise have confirmed the superior performance of birch veneer for speaker cabinets, particularly in the shading of bass sounds. The cabinet is given the same luxurious and environmentally friendly (non-PVC) open-pore finish used on Yamahas finest wood-grain pianos. Embedded switches also show the scrupulous care that Yamaha has taken in designing this subwoofer. CONVENIENT FEATURES Three BASS Modes The BASS (Bass Action Selector System) function provides a selection of three modes to match the source being listened to. Wide for powerful sound with movies, Normal for natural sound with music and movies, and Narrow to cut unnecessary bass from music sources to enjoy clearer sound quality. Full-Function Remote Control Unit The remote unit makes it convenient to operate the subwoofer. It lets the user turn the power on and off, adjust the volume, adjust the high cut filter, select phase (normal/reverse), select BASS mode, engage the sleep timer and set and select the preset memories. Three Preset Memories Three combinations of settings (volume, BASS, high cut filter and phase) can be memorized and recalled at the touch of a button on the remote unit. Sleep Timer Engaging the sleep timer shuts off the power after two hours. This is both handy and energy-saving, because people often forget to turn off their subwoofer. Other Notable Feafures Continuously variable high cut filter (40 140Hz) LFE terminal (bypasses the high cut filter) Power can be turned on and off using a Yamaha receiver/amp remote unit Remote controllable motor-driven volume control Low power consumption with standby power of 0.5W Gold-plated terminals Frequency response: 18 160Hz Heavy construction: 32kg (70.1lbs.)
600W Digital Amplifier The Soavo-900SW has a high-end audio component built in! its 600W digital amplifier. Featuring Yamahas exclusive Power Engine chipset, it uses a constant gain PLL modulator circuit, a cross feedback loop circuit, an Active Power Control system, a highly efficient power supply and the highest quality parts. It delivers exceptionally high levels of power and sound quality, yet with low power consumption and compact size.
Yamaha original digital amplifier, and power transformer (4.2kg; 9.3lbs.) and custom-made block capacitors
Front Firing Design The front firing design ensures extremely fast response and attack, and is especially suited to the accurate reproduction of music. Twin Wooden Linear Ports The wooden ports are carved from a block of alder wood and aesthetically match the enclosure, the twin ports provide more port area without increasing the subwoofers size, as one large port would do. The shape is based on a natural logarithm to prevent extraneous wind noise.
Effect of Linear Port
Advanced YST II produces rich bass sound, and the addition of two Linear Ports increases bass output.
CABINET Heavy-Duty Construction with Three-Way Mitered-Joint Construction The Soavo-900SW employs three-way mitered-joint construction at the cabinet corners and baffle/body connections to increase the tightness of the joints so the

About Lead Free Solder
All of the P.C.B.s installed in this unit and solder joints are soldered using the lead free solder. Among some types of lead free solder currently available, it is recommended to use one of the following types for the repair work. Sn + Ag + Cu (tin + silver + copper) Sn + Cu (tin + copper) Sn + Zn + Bi (tin + zinc + bismuth)
Caution:
As the melting point temperature of the lead free solder is about 30C to 40C (50F to 70F) higher than that of the lead solder, be sure to use a soldering iron suitable to each solder.

s REPAIR PROCEDURES
Safety Measures Some internal parts in this product contain high voltages and are dangerous. Be sure to take safety measures during servicing, such as wearing insulating gloves. C77 and C80 on the MAIN (1) P.C.B. are dangerous, for a high voltage is retained there even after the power is turned off. Before the repair work, connect about 5k-ohm/10W resistor between terminals of the capacitor to forced discharging. After the repair work, also perform forced discharging by connecting about 5k-ohm/10W resistor between terminals of the capacitor. Replacing Faulty Parts Described below is the method to diagnose trouble of the major parts. FET (Q108, 109, 110, 111) If a trouble exists, the D-S resistance value should be close to 0-ohm. (The normal value should be 1k-ohm or more.)
