Also available on the 2011 Ford Edge Sport is the worlds first implementation of iTunes Tagging in a factory-installed HD Radio receiver. With a simple push of the TAG button on the MyFord touchscreen display, the song information will be stored in the radios memory. Once a song is tagged, customers will dock their iPod to the SYNC system and the tagged song information will transfer to that iPod. Up to 100 tags on SYNC can be stored until the iPod is connected. When the iPod is then synced to iTunes, a playlist of tagged songs will appear. Customers can preview, and if desired, purchase and download tagged songs from the iTunes Store. One significant benefit of HD Radio technology is the sound quality of the broadcast. With digital transmission, sound quality is dramatically better FM sounds like a CD and AM sounds like FM broadcasts. And unlike analog broadcasts, digital broadcasts arent susceptible to interference, fadeout and other issues.

Staying on the fast track for improved fuel economy
The Ford Edge midsize crossover has been a hit from the very start. Customers made Edge the No. 1-selling vehicle in the segment in its first full year on the market, and 400,000 have been sold since launch in late 2006. Throughout its history, the Ford Edge has seen consistent fuel economy gains. The 2011 Ford Edge SEL and Limited V6 engines are rated at 19 mpg city and 27 mpg highway, unsurpassed in its class (front-wheel drive). Heres a look at where fuel economy gains were made on the 2011 Ford Edge:
Variable-displacement steering pump Unlike a
conventional hydraulic pump, which draws constant power from the engine whenever it is running, this system varies the amount of steering assist based on engine speed, anticipating the drivers need for steering assist.
Engine improvements The 2011 Ford Edge is powered by
a 3.5-liter V6 engine with twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT). This technology allows on-the-fly adjustment to the engines valve timing for maximum efficiency. Friction is reduced by piston-cooling jets and polished valvetrain buckets. Both the intake manifold and cylinder heads have been optimized for improved airflow and efficiency. Idle speed was reduced from 620 to 600 rpm.
Aggressive deceleration fuel shutoff
This strategy shuts off fuel during deceleration, such as when approaching a traffic light.

Battery management

The system allows the battery to be charged or discharged at optimal times instead of allowing the alternator to continuously charge the battery.

Aerodynamic improvements

The grille openings were optimized to reduce excess airflow to the engine compartment. Underbody shielding and tire spoilers have been added to help create a more efficient aerodynamic shape.
