2005 Suzuki Forenza S Wagon (Manual) Compact sedan that would have been the Daewoo Nubira replacement, will be powered by a 2.0-liter 126-hp 4-cylinder and priced at $12,999.
COMPLETE REPORT SECTION 2: Capsule Review
New for 2005, Suzuki adds a wagon version to the already successful Forenza lineup. The versatile wagon is a mix of handsome European styling and many standard features that make it a great value. With 62 cubic feet of space, the Suzuki wagon tops both the Ford Focus and VW Jetta wagons. The Forenza is powered by a 126-hp, 2.0-liter 16-valve DOHC four. A five-speed transmission is standard, and a four-speed automatic is optional. The Forenza comes in three trim levels: the base S, which includes A/C and power windows and locks; the LX,which adds a power sunroof, cruise control, and l5-inch alloy wheels; and the top-of-the-line EX, which adds leather seats. All these wagons come standard with four-wheel disc brakes; anti-lock control is optional. Like all Suzukis, this one is covered by a seven-year/100,000mile limited powertrain warranty.
COMPLETE REPORT SECTION 3: Reviews, Road Tests and Features
Long-Term Test Review: 2005 Suzuki Forenza EX Wagon
Reliable and inexpensive, but plain as tapioca pudding. BY ANDR IDZIKOWSKI May 2006
It usually takes us 10 to 12 months to put 40,000 miles on cars in our long-term test fleet. But after 15 months, our Suzuki Forenza wagon was still 6000 miles short of that goal. Egads! Suzuki wanted its car back! Indeed, the companys minions had called a few times to inquire if it was still in our possession, so we stuffed long-suffering road warrior Jared Gall (this would be his third long-distance trek in the Forenza) and his buddy Dan Klos into the wagon for a 13-day odyssey to rack up mileage sufficient to complete our test. So there they were, late on a Saturday night on a desolate stretch of Highway 14 in loneliest northern Wyoming, with Dan at the wheel, cresting a small rise, when the Forenza center-punched a terrier-sized porcupine. The impact was explosively loud and startling. Jared and Dan made a U-turn but were unable to offer mouth-to-mouth to their spiny victim, who was, sad to say, beyond mortal help. They did notice its quills had pierced the radiator and the Forenza was bleeding coolant.
The Forenza got paid a lot of backhanded compliments. Most staffers rated its exterior styling better than average and the quality of the interior materials as pretty good considering the low sticker price. It was viewed as a handy vehicle for running errands around town and for trips to Lowes the rear seats could be quickly folded down without having to remove the headrests. But when it came to the Forenzas engine and transmission, the logbook was full of unkind words. With only 126 horsepower, the engine struggled to get to highway speeds and was annoyingly loud and vibrated in a coarse manner. The automatic transmission was knocked for the balky way it shifted and for how convoluted it was to move the shift lever from drive to park; no one liked the wrestling that involved. One driver concisely summed up our experience: This Suzuki is perfectly mediocre. A great appliance for people who have no interest in cars. The motor is buzzy, and the weird transmission mapping only seems to make the problem worse.
The Forenzas performance at the test track did improve with age. When we first tested it with 981 miles on the odometer, it loped to 60 mph in 11 seconds flat. After 40,000 miles, that time dropped to 10.2 seconds. The quarter-mile run improved by 0.4 second to 17.7, and trap speed was up 2 mph to 78 mph. Skidpad grip increased from 0.78 g to 0.80 g. We werent at all impressed with the Forenzas gas mileage; we recorded a mediocre 25 mpg over the long haul. By way of comparison, that 00 Focus wagon averaged 30 mpg during its 40,000-mile adventure here. In short, the Suzuki Forenza EX wagon turned out to be a well-equipped, low-priced reliable mode of transportation, but a more powerful and refined engine and drivetrain would go a long way to making it a bit more than just an appliance on wheels. Rants and Raves K.C. COLWELL I produce more horsepower buttering my toast than the Forenzas four-banger does. Driving it through the mountains is a chore. Hesitate with the gas, and boom youre going 55 mph. PATTI MAKI A nice little wagon, but nothing an enthusiast would ever consider. PETE FERGUSON Handled well in rain, felt safe. One day in snow was also good no problems. Summary: If the vibrations were fixed, this car with a manual and without leather would be a good deal. PATRICK BEDARD Suzuki is keeping alive its rep for buzzy, bastard little boxes with this one. It wouldnt take much to make this a wonderful little car at the price, but vibes are so yesterday and the weak radio reception is so 40 years ago. DAN WINTER Not a bad little vehicle for trips to the Home Depot. I find myself driving in third rather than drive because of the way the shifter gate is set up. SUE MATHEWS Engine makes a lot of noise but doesnt go anywhere for a second or two when you are looking for get up and go. JARED GALL I dont know offhand how much the Forenza weighs, but the 126-hp hamster-wheel four is simply not up to the task of acceptable highway propulsion. Through the mountains of Utah and Colorado, I had to keep the throttle pinned just to maintain speed, and even then lost momentum going uphill. JASON HAINES Good headroom and legroom for the driver. Even with the sunroof my head doesnt touch the ceiling. For a six-foot-threeinch driver, this is often a problem in Japanese cars. BAUBLES AND BOLT-ONS REMOTE STARTER: For $133, we had a local car-stereo shop install a Scytek Security Galaxy 2000RS Plus remote car starter to make the Forenza more inviting on cold mornings. No real new technology here; just a great bolt-on to an otherwise utilitarian vehicle. The installation was trouble-free and took about two hours. The Galaxy 2000RS Plus worked great just hold down the star button for two seconds and the car cranks up. The remote locks would work from either the factory key or the aftermarket starter. For a bargain car starter, we were impressed with the Galaxys range. In an open parking lot, the car could be fired from 400 feet away, and we had no problem starting it from inside a building. Human error is the only fault this system may encounter. No matter how long the car had to warm up, the leather seats were still rock hard if the climate control had not been set in heat mode before the car was started by remote. You can find Scytek products at electronics stores or online at www.scytek.net.
SATELLITE-RADIO RECEIVER: Commuting to work on just 126 horsepower isnt much fun, but doing so with weak radio reception makes it even worse. After 5099 miles, we went looking for help and found the Delphi XM Roady2 radio receiver. Installation is simple: Just put the magnetic antenna on the roof, run the antenna wire through the door opening, and plug the unit into a 12-volt outlet. We purchased our Roady2 at WalMart for $129 (the price has since dropped), activation was $14.99 ($9.99 if done online), and XM service is $12.95 per month. The Roady2 transmits the XM signal to the car stereo via a built-in FM modulator that can be set to one of 12 radio stations. In big cities, some staffers found there was a lot of radio interference. If FM interference is a problem, Delphi recommends the radio be directly wired to the car stereo, or use the included cassette adapter. The antenna wire had a tendency to kink after having the door repeatedly closed on it and failed after a couple of swaps from one car to another. We got a replacement for $35 at Radio Shack and hid the small-gauge wire behind interior trim pieces. Other problems: The devices pushbuttons are two small and result in fumbling, and the cassette adapter didnt work properly. But other than the small snags, staffers loved having 160 radio channels to choose from. K.C. Colwell

2006 Charting the Changes Suzuki
Suzuki October 2005
The Forenza sedan and wagon get freshened front-end styling and a new wheel design and come in a simplified trim-level structure. We're still wondering what a "Vitara" is, grand or otherwise. In any event, there's a new one. According to Suzuki, this Grand Vitara combines unibody and ladder-frame construction, has an independent suspension, and will be available with dual-range four-wheel drive. Unchanged: Verona, Aerio, Reno, XL-7.

COMPLETE REPORT SECTION 5: Crash Test Ratings
Each year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations New Car Assessment Program (NCAP)crash tests cars, light trucks, sport-utility vehicles, and vans that are new, popular, redesigned, or have improved safety equipment. These vehicles are then rated on how well they protect drivers and passengers during frontal and side collisions. NCAP uses a fivestar system for rating vehicles, with five stars indicating the highest safety rating and one star the lowest. Although it is impossible to assess how well a vehicle provides protection in all circumstances using a single test, NCAP ratings provide a useful basis for comparing vehicle safety. For more information, visit http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/
About the NHTSA: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is responsible for reducing deaths, injuries and economic losses resulting from motor vehicle crashes. This is accomplished by setting and enforcing safety performance standards for motor vehicles and motor vehicle equipment, and through grants to state and local governments to enable them to conduct effective local highway safety programs. NHTSA investigates safety defects in motor vehicles, sets and enforces fuel economy standards, helps states and local communities reduce the threat of drunk drivers, promotes the use of safety belts, child safety seats and air bags, investigates odometer fraud, establishes and enforces vehicle anti-theft regulations and provides consumer information on motor vehicle safety topics. NHTSA also conducts research on driver behavior and traffic safety, to develop the most efficient and effective means of bringing about safety improvements.
