REMOTE INTERACTIVE (RI) DOCK FOR THE iPod
Doing More with Your iPodThrough Onkyos Imaginative Sight and Sound
Simply place your iPod in the DS-A1 Remote Interactive Dock connected to any Onkyo RI-compatible receiver/amplifier to experience the powerfully rich sound of Onkyo audio-video components. Control your music from your RI remote and charge your iPod while you enjoy your iPods digital musicand photosthrough Onkyos expansive sound, from mini systems to separate components to home theater systems. Unlike purely iPod-dedicated systems, you can fully integrate the convenience and storage capacity of your iPod with all your other Onkyo home entertainment componentsand share the experience with everyone.
Onkyos Exclusive Remote Interactive (RI) Technology Offers Remote Control of iPod Over the last 10 years, Onkyos RI system has enabled users to operate, via a single remote, all parts of a system set up with some or all of the following components: receivers, amplifiers, Universal/DVD/CD players, disk changers, MD decks, cassette decks and tuners. Onkyo owners have been able to enjoy the same level of smooth operation as they would experience with an integrated audio-video system. The DS-A1 is connected via the Tape, MD, CD-R or HDD input (whichever is free) on your receiver/amplifier, and an RI connection is made directly between the DS-A1 and the receiver/amplifiers RI input. You may then use the remote for the iPods common functions like Play, Pause, Next Song and Previous Song. Share Your Digital Photos through iPod Photo By connecting the DS-A1 to your TV via the S-Video output on the RI docks rear, you can share your digital photos (stored in an iPod photo) with others. You can playback the iPod photos contents as a slideshow (frame-by-frame playback is not possible) over the larger display of your TVan entirely enjoyable experience compared to viewing your photos over the limitations of a computer display. While you relive your images, you also have the option of music (through your Onkyo system) to accompany your slideshow. Charge Your iPod Battery While You Enjoy Your Music The DS-A1 has an AC adapter on the rear that needs to be plugged in when you playback your music. When your iPod is in the RI Dock, which is plugged into a wall socket, your iPods battery will charge, regardless of whether the DS-A1s power indicator is on or off. While youre enjoying the iPods music in the comfort of your own home, youre also fully charging your iPod for when youre on the move.
A Range of Functions Designed to Integrate the iPod with Onkyo Components* Through the RI function, you can control basic iPod functions such as Play, Pause, Next Song and Previous Song. Depending on your receiver/amplifier and the version of iPod, the DS-A1 makes it easier to operate your iPod and integrate it into your system. With the System On/System Off function, the powering on/off of your receiver/amplifier will also power on/off the DS-A1 and iPod. Similarly, with the Auto Power On function, by pressing your remote controllers play function while your receiver/amplifier is in Standby mode, the receiver/amplifier will automatically turn on and select your iPod as the input source. The Auto Selector (Direct Change) function will automatically select your iPod as the input source if you start iPod playback while listening to another input source. And with the iPods Timer function, you can power on and start playback at a specified time. Increased Versatility and Enhanced Functionality with Latest iPod Generations The DS-A1 is compatible with the following: 3rd Generation iPod with touch wheel and buttons (software 2.2 or later); 4th Generation iPod with Click Wheel (software version 3.0.2 or later); iPod mini (software 1.2 or later); or iPod photo (software 1.0 or later). 4th Generation iPods and iPod minis bring a lot more than the basic functions (depending on your receiver/amplifier):* Shuffle for Songs and Albums, Repeat modes, Backlight duration, and Playlist/Album modes. If you upgrade your iPod or your Onkyo components, it is possible to get greater remote capability.
* Available functions will vary depending on which iPod model and which Onkyo components are used.

Function Overview
Basic Operation You can use your amps remote controller to control basic iPod functions such as Play, Pause, Next Song, Previous Song, and so on. Depending on your amp and generation of iPod, you may also be able to use the following functions. System On Function When you turn on your amp, the RI Dock and your iPod turn on as well. With some components, you may need to press your remote controllers [ON] button twice to turn on the other devices in your system. With 3rd generation iPods, only the RI Dock is turned on. System Off Function When you turn off your amp, the RI Dock and iPod turn off as well.
Auto Power On Function If you press your remote controllers Play [ ] button while your amp is on Standby, your amp will automatically turn on and select your iPod as the input source. Then, your iPod will start playback. With a 3rd generation iPod, you can use the remote controllers Play [ ] or Pause [ ] button to do this. Direct Change Function If you start iPod playback using your remote controller while listening to another input source, your amp will automatically select your iPod as the input source. With a 3rd generation iPod, you can use the remote controllers Play [ ] or Pause [ ] button to do this. See your AV receivers instruction manual for details. If your AV receiver doesnt allow you to assign video inputs to input sources, connect the RI Docks S VIDEO jack to the AV receivers VIDEO 2 IN jack. When you want to enjoy an iPod slideshow with music, rst select the VIDEO 2 input source, and then select the TAPE input source. Your AV receiver will output the audio being fed to the TAPE IN, and because the video source doesnt change when the TAPE input source is selected, itll continue to output the video being fed to the VIDEO 2 IN.

iPod Functions
Starting Playback on Your iPod
If you start playback on your iPod, your amps input source will automatically switch to the input to which your iPod is connected. If your amp is on Standby, it will automatically turn on rst.
Using Your iPods Alarm Clock
You can use your iPods Alarm Clock function to automatically turn on your iPod and amp at a specied time. Your amps input source will automatically be set to the input to which your iPod is connected. Notes: To use these functions, your iPod must be in the RI Dock, and the RI Dock must be connected to your amp with both an cable and an audio cable. When you use these functions, be sure to set your amps volume control to a suitable level.
Your amp may take several seconds to startup, so you might not hear the rst few seconds of the rst song. When you select a different input source, stop playback on your iPod to prevent your amp from selecting the iPod input source by mistake. If any accessories are connected to your iPod, your amp may not be able to select the input source properly.
Charging Your iPod Battery
The RI Dock charges your iPod battery while your iPod is in the RI Dock. Notes: To charge your iPod battery, the AC adapter must be plugged into a suitable wall outlet, and connected to the RI Docks DC IN jack. Your iPod battery will be charged even when the RI Docks Power indicator is off. See your iPods instruction manual for more information on battery charging.

Specications and features are subject to change without notice. The operating instructions in this manual apply to the iPod as of April 2005, and may change with future upgrades to the iPod software. The AC adapter (IU15-2120100-WP) supplied with the RI Dock is designed exclusively for use with the RI Dock. Do not use it with another device. Likewise, do not use any other AC adapter with the RI Dock. Doing so may damage the RI Dock. If theres any noise when listening to an FM or AM radio station with your tuner or receiver, try moving the antenna away from the RI Dock, iPod, and AC adapters cable. In addition, do not twist the AC adapters cable around any other cables.
The remote controller doesnt control the iPod
Make sure the iPod is properly inserted in the RI Dock. If your remote controller has remote mode buttons, make sure youve selected the right mode. Check the position of the RI Docks RI MODE switch. When you operate your iPod, point your remote controller at your amp. The RI Dock must be connected to your amp with both an cable and an audio cable. The TAPE IN on some amps can be set to TAPE, MD, or CDR. Make sure the RI Docks RI MODE switch and remote control mode match this setting. See your amps manual for more information. If you still cant control your iPod, start playback by pressing your iPods Play button. Remote operation should then be possible.
