VITAL TRUCKING DATA IS ON THE HORIZON

THE TIME IS RIGHT

BUSINESS CAN NOT AFFORD TO IGNORE INTEGRATED GEOSPATIAL SOLUTIONS
By Eric Fumat, Vice President and General Manager, NAVTEQ Business Solutions EMEA.
Enterprises invested massively in the 80s and 90s to streamline their internal processes and benefited from the latest innovations in software and computer technologies.
No more unpleasant surprises with NAVTEQ Transport, which warns truck drivers about hazards such as height restrictions, length and width, and legal restrictions.
Map dataset of truck attributes being developed by NAVTEQ NAVTEQ is developing a specialist map dataset of truck attributes that gives the European trucking industry access to important transport-specific information, which may help save costs, enhance convenience and improve customer service. Called NAVTEQ Transport, the dataset will feature physical restrictions such as height, weight, length and width, and legal restrictions including hazardous materials and routes where large vehicles arent allowed. The dataset will also contain warning information that will enable users to be alerted about steep hills, sharp curves and lateral winds, preferred truck routes and a specialist set of points of interest (POIs) related to truck stops and service stations. With such accurate information at their fingertips, fleet operators will be able to plan more efficient routes, minimise off-route kilometres and calculate costs more accurately. Other benefits include fewer incidents involving bridges and overpasses, and cost savings because there will be fewer fuel- and time-wasting detours. Inside: E

Our map data is already used by transportation companies worldwide in a range of fleet management and transport optimisation solutions which help to improve the bottom line, said Eric Fumat, Vice President and General Manager, Business Solutions EMEA. This new product answers the everincreasing call from the industry for even further productivity gains. Not only do we help companies to improve the bottom line, we also help them be on time and increase their own service to customers. The accuracy of NAVTEQs map data will give its new product a strong market advantage. In France and Germany alone the project involves field verifiers travelling around 800,000 kilometres to collect data, but NAVTEQ believes such an investment is worthwhile to build the highest quality data that creates the best possible trucking map dataset available. NAVTEQ Transport will be rolled out across Europe in phases beginning in mid May 2006 with France, followed by Germany in Q4 06. As always we will be listening to our customers and the final pattern of timing and countries will be led by their demands, added Eric.

Now its time to look externally! Huge productivity gains are at hand for enterprises looking to optimise and manage their mobile assets and lift them out of a black hole. Companies eager to improve their bottom line and increase customer satisfaction will have to adopt our industrys offering because the price of oil will probably remain high. Also, technologies now allow mobile asset management solutions to be deployed cost effectively. Mobile GPS devices, fast communication technologies and Internet-based solutions are all converging as robust and proven tools offered by our industry. So great is the return on investment that decision makers can no longer ignore our joint offerings. Its not unusual to save anything from 7 to 15 per cent of the operating costs by optimising the dispatch of field technicians or delivery vans. NAVTEQ works daily with its partners to deliver fitfor-purpose integrated geospatial solutions that let them seamlessly optimise, track and navigate see NAVTEQ Transport, left. Only then can our customers mobile assets get out of that black hole.

WISEPILOT SCOOPS TOP PRIZE
Appellos GPS solution takes first place at Swedish Mobile Awards
SATNAV PUTS THE SNOOPER INDAGO ON HIGH ROAD TO MORE SUCCESS
Maps help drivers avoid blackspots High-quality maps, solid in-vehicle sector status and impressive technical support have secured NAVTEQ a contract with the UKs market-leading speed camera detector company, Performance Products (PP). PP has put NAVTEQ maps at the heart of its new Snooper Indago integrated speed camera locator, which includes a portable satellite navigation system for the first time.

Another user gets wise to Wisepilot.
Wisepilot Mobile Navigation from Swedish company Appello has successfully competed against established brands to win the award for best GPS solution at the Swedish Mobile Awards 2005, just six months after its launch. It is with a sense of pride that, as a relative newcomer in the industry, we take first place ahead of such well-established products and companies, said Leif Sundstrom, CEO of Appello. It proves we are on the right track and that our products are well received. Wisepilot was shown for the first time in January 2004 at the NAVTEQ booth at Comdex. Then Telia Sonera, the Nordics largest wireless carrier, launched the product in Sweden June 2005 under the brand Telia Navigator. An innovative, cost-effective and easy-to-use service, Wisepilot turns mobile devices into allinclusive driving or walking navigation systems with constantly updated maps of Europe and North America provided by NAVTEQ.
Wisepilot and Telia Navigator contain real-time traffic information, speed camera alerts, as well as a unique and simple approach to finding destinations. Users can search for companies and individuals by name or phone number through directory listings from leading Nordic search company, Eniro. NAVTEQ has had a business relationship with Appello since its early development and now provides data for all its applications. With TeliaSonera, Appello broke into the global telecom market and its star continues to rise with the recent launch of the navigation service Navig8 powered by Wisepilot for Elite Mobile in the UK, and the addition of Wisepilot to the P910a smartphone for Sony Ericsson in North America and Europe. We will continue to develop our concept and during next year deliver even more customer value and innovative functionality in Wisepilot, added Leif.

A speed camera alert.

Snooper has manufactured and sold more speed camera detection systems in the UK and Europe than anyone else and is the number one supplier in this field, said PPs Marketing Director, Steven Ballard. So, when we decided that the natural progression for our systems was to integrate street-level satellite navigation we wanted to team up with the best mapping supplier available, which inevitably led us to NAVTEQ. The compact Snooper Indago combines expert NAVTEQ mapping with PPs comprehensive and accurate Enigma speed camera database, giving users the ability to get from A to B while being told via clear, concise voice alerts to avoid potential hazards such as speed cameras, speed limits and many officially designated accident blackspots. Snooper Indago incorporates a 3.5-inch full colour display with a choice of 2D or 3D map views and mounts to a vehicles windscreen with the suction cup bracket provided. Its built-in rechargeable battery means there are no trailing wires. Our customers demand units of the highest quality and Indago is no exception, incorporating cutting edge design from the inside out, culminating in the most stylish unit available on the market, added Steven. PPs addition of satnav technology to its Snooper Indago did not go unnoticed in the British press. It was praised by The Guardian and Sunday Times and came in the top 15 of 69 steps to motoring bliss listed in Test Drive magazine.

FALK ACTIVEPILOT MAKES NAVIGATING CLEVER
Users gain feature-rich navigation Falk activepilot allows users of every device from low-cost standard handsets to mid- and high-level phones to access the most current updated maps from NAVTEQ, and offers a host of other features. At present, this is the only European navigation system that can be operated on the lowest-cost handsets, but it allows the conversion of entry-level phones such as the Siemens C65, Nokia 6230i or Motorola L6 for just 99. The system also has the advantage of being online. With data stored centrally, Falk activepilot can supply many more POIs, destination and city addresses, restaurants, petrol stations and hospitals. Other features not normally associated with such small phones include pedestrian navigation and changeable voices.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

Turning Point talks to Serge Bussat (below) NAVTEQs recently appointed Vice President of Consumer business in Europe, about the milestones of 2005 and the continued support partners can expect in 2006.

WHATS NEW

NAVTEQ IS ON BOARD WITH MEDION MEDION has again chosen NAVTEQ to supply maps for a new range of high, mid and low range products. NAVTEQs quality maps are now preinstalled on board the MDPNA 350 GPS navigation system, the MDPBA 1500 Personal Navigation Assistant and the MDPNA 500T GPS navigation solution for cars and pedestrians. The PNA 1500 has a swivel antenna so it can be used as an organiser or navigation assistant in portrait and landscape view and both the 1500 and 500T could handle TMC (Traffic Message Channel). GARMIN NVI IS A HIT WITH TRAVELLERS Travellers can save space in their luggage, thanks to Garmins latest generation of navigation devices. The new, slimline, nvi is the ultimate travel companion. It includes a GPS navigator, language translator, travel guide, MP3, audio book, currency measurement converter, world clock and digital photograph organiser all in one slim, easy-to-use device. The nvi represents the pinnacle in integrated consumer electronics for travellers, said Gary Kelley, Garmins vice-president of marketing. PACKARD BELL BOOSTS ITS MOBILE LINE-UP Packard Bells new GPS 400 Personal Navigator Assistant expands its mobile line-up and lands it firmly on the consumer satellite navigation map. The affordable, versatile GPS unit can be used for in-car or pedestrian navigation because of its compact, portable design, which includes a builtin antenna. It also has multimedia features in the form of an MP3 music player and photo viewer. The Packard Bell GPS 400 is shipped with a preinstalled NAVTEQ country map and Destinator navigation software. SKYS THE LIMIT WITH NAVI-3600 An innovative product from Skyway offers navigation and entertainment at the same time. With the Navi-3600 users benefit from a visual and voice guide, a high-resolution screen (TFT 3.6" touch screen), detailed maps from NAVTEQ, plus the ability to keep an entire photographic album or store 1,000 songs as MP3 files. It also supports MPEG 4 format and DIVx.

How did NAVTEQ support this development? With some important milestones: we launched several additional countries and are now offering digital navigable maps in more than 50. We fulfilled our commitment to deliver a full coverage product for Western Europe by the end of 2005 and successfully launched the full postal code and enhanced POI (Points of Interest) products for major countries. As a result of these initiatives and our support of the channel with training and other tools, our market share experienced strong growth. So well be continuing to extend such investments in 2006. How are you and your team going to support NAVTEQs partners in 2006? We are committed to support them heavily in their day-to-day business, not only with the most powerful and highest quality digital maps but also along the entire value chain. Im looking forward to meeting our partners at our booth during one of the upcoming major shows. See you at CES, 3GSM World Congress or CeBIT.
NAVTEQ looks forward to a prosperous 2006 TP: 2005 was a fantastic year. What did you think were the highlights? SB: Its clear that we stand at the threshold of a consumer mass market. The portable navigation market more than doubled again to roughly six million units and we saw the market entry of major CE/IT/Automotive players such as Sony, LG, Packard Bell, Harman Becker and Delphi Grundig.
NEW WAY TO MARKET BOOSTS SALES IN ITALY
Q8 loyalty card tie-up includes navigation system A new retailer channel opened by NAVTEQ through Q8 has resulted in increased sales of Garmin and other navigation products. NAVTEQ entered the milestone deal with Kuwait Petroleum Italy owners of the Q8 brand in October. Holders of the Q8 loyalty card can choose a Garmin C320 portable navigation system when they collect enough points through purchases at Q8 petrol stations that adhere to the loyalty programme in Italy. Q8 is the first oil company in the world to deliver a portable navigation product through a loyalty promotion. The marketing campaign lasts for six months, but with 2,200 Q8 outlets across Italy belonging to the loyalty programme called Club delle Meraviglie there will be plenty of chances for customers to build up points. That means additional sales achieved by NAVTEQ and its partners. Sales arent the only benefit. The new channel boosts NAVTEQs brand awareness and visibility in Italy as well as its partners. Under the agreement, the NAVTEQ on board logo can be seen on five million printed catalogues illustrating the Garmin C320, on posters at Q8 sales points, Poster power. the www.q8.it website and on the main television channels running adverts about the catalogue. We are delighted that strong teamwork by our sales and marketing team has resulted in this new channel being established, allowing us to get additional units sold and to develop a strong brand awareness, said Roberto Gigotti, Sales Manager South Europe. Cristiano Ranalletta, Customer Marketing Manager South Europe, added: Q8 is a huge brand in the Italian market, which makes our success even more pleasing!

MapMechanics function automatically identifies the exact borders of the Congestion Charge area. A geofence system set up by Seven Eye recognises when tracked vehicles cross the area and using the GPS unit, automatically triggers an email to the operator, ensuring the charge is paid that day rather than incurring a late payment fine.
Decision-critical mapping at heart of GIS Fire and rescue services throughout France have chosen GeoConcepts Geographic Information System (GIS) to aid them at every stage of their fire fighting. GeoConcept, the European leader in decision-critical mapping, provides the emergency services with a crisis and operations management solution covering everything from prevention to post-incident recovery. Using map data from NAVTEQ, GeoConcept GIS allows Fire and Rescue services to locate and
evaluate risk, plan routes and calculate itineraries, anticipate special regulations from the Schema Departemental dAnalyse et de Couverture de Risque (SDACR), and bring a situation under control using set recovery procedures. Geoconcept technology is easy to use. Associated with the high precision of NAVTEQ data, it brings to Fire and Rescue Services an adapted operational solution, which becomes a really good decisioncritical tool during the incident, explained Marine Sage, Emergency Business Unit Manager at GeoConcept. Interventions are more efficient and security of field forces is better.

Rolled out in late Spring 2006, NAVTEQ Geographic Coverage gives customers access to basic routing and mapping applications without the depth of content offered by the companys turn-by-turn product. It includes selective road geometry, administrative boundaries, street names, Points of Interest (POI), named places and cartography, and offers total connectivity in geographical areas still being built to NAVTEQs full navigable specification. The initial Geographic Coverage release covers Eastern European countries not extensively mapped by our high specification turn-by-turn database, said Alastair Protheroe, Product Marketing Director EMEA. It will be phased out over time as our turn-by-turn product expands to cover these countries.
FIGHT AGAINST FIRES IS FASTER WITH GIS

MYCAB'S TAXI REVOLUTION

Netrevelation solves TeliaSoneras logistics problem A unique system called Mycab from logistics solution provider Netrevelation is streamlining the way taxis are booked and used by staff from Swedish telecoms company TeliaSonera. Netrevelations specialist software controls everything involved in using a taxi, including bookings (whether by telephone, travel agency or corporate reception desk), transport and administration. Mycab uses the same portal as air, train, hotel and rental car reservations, so integration is easy. It will save more than one million euros a year in admin costs. Using accurate map data from NAVTEQ, the software calculates the distance and travel time for every taxi booked, so users can find the best fare, optimal journey and correct departure time for a cab connecting to a flight or train. The map data is the backbone of the system, said Tim Astrom, Netrevelations Manager Business Development. When more than 1,000 taxi journeys are processed daily, even the slightest deviation can prove costly. We rely on the precision, accuracy and road attributes that NAVTEQ delivers.

Flexibility, teamwork and a long history of working together meant we were able to deliver the application from project kick-off to service launch in just six weeks, said Guy Shimoni, Telmap Project Manager.

3SOFT BRANCHES OUT INTO NEW TERRITORY
Hybrid smartphone system is a departure for offboard specialist Quality maps and a good reputation with the automotive industry have earned NAVTEQ an exciting new client 3Soft, the leading provider of software solutions for the embedded systems market. 3Soft is noted for developing client software for offboard navigation solutions for the automotive industry, which often uses NAVTEQ maps. Recently 3Soft branched out from the business-to-business (B2B) environment to launch one of the first hybrid smartphone navigation systems and turned to NAVTEQ for map material. Street director adds an onboard component to 3Softs proven off-board navigation solution. Frequently needed map data can be stored onboard on a PDA or a smartphones memory card while off-board data, such as little-used routes, is transmitted from a central server. This means theres no need to buy maps that users may only use a few times. Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians can all use street director, so it is very flexible. Customers such as car media specialists Paragon Cullmann have already built their own product but end-users may also purchase the solution via 3Softs online shop at www.street-director.de.

NEW MAP CONTENT MAKES INDUSTRIAL ZONES EASY TO FIND
Coverage extended in France Businesses and end users of NAVTEQ maps in France are looking forward to the addition of more than 12,000 industrial zones and shopping centre polygons to NAVTEQs core product. Many businesses in industrial complexes have the centres name in their address rather than a street name, which makes it difficult for customers to locate them. The coverage extension means organisations will be able to find them easily. Transportation companies will be able to locate customer delivery points, so they can better plan delivery schedules. Geomarketing organisations can easily find potential business customers for local services theyre promoting. Commercial travellers such as sales representatives will be better able to locate their customers through in-car navigation systems.
STREETMAP UNVEILS SITE FOR O2 Streetmap has tailor-made a website for O2s new i-mode services, which launched on 3G and 2G in the UK and Ireland in October 2005. O2 wanted mobile users to have access to secure sites from respected companies and Streetmap was one of more than 100 international and local mobile Internet sites to fit the bill. As the site uses maps from NAVTEQ, it also fulfilled O2s aim of including sites with a rich range of content. VODAFONE NAVIGATOR TO USE NAVTEQ NAVTEQ is supplying map data of Europe to Webraska, whose platform is powering the new GPS Vodafone Navigator solutions for smartphones from Vodafone Italy. The all-in-one pack includes navigation software from Webraska, a Bluetooth GPS receiver, universal car cradle, and one-year subscription to the service. MAJESTIC LAUNCHES NP01 The Majestic NP 01 portable GPS unit contains a SD-256MB card with preinstalled maps of Italy (Destinator Software). It also comes with millions of Points of Interest (POI and a digital monitor TFT 3.5-inch touch screen.

said Alastair Protheroe, NAVTEQs Product Marketing Director EMEA. Often shopping centre addresses are not apparent or known by the end consumer and the ability to enter the name rather than the address will improve their chance of locating their destination successfully. As well as business and end consumers, software developers will also benefit from the addition of new content into NAVTEQs core map product. It will be easier and quicker to incorporate it into their own products. Cartographic accuracy will improve, because single point location can be used for rapid geographic location of the feature, while a polygon boundary allows it to be represented on a map.
New content with improved accuracy is being added to NAVTEQ's core map product.
End users of navigation products will also benefit from shopping centres being included as a destination they can select,
