I am very, very happy with this product. Not only does it look great compared to most of the dowdy-looking slow cookers on the market. This slow cooker is perfect for the small family or single people.

This slow cooker is worth the extra cost compared to that of its slightly cheaper counterparts. It is well-built. Very happy with this slow cooker. Turn on in the morning and when it is finished it will turn to warm. Easy to clean and attractive. Good size.

Modern American life leaves those with families precious little time to function like the families of yesteryear. Between the job commutes.

Having been convinced to see this megextravaganza in IMAX, my comments may not be popular. In "A Face in the Crowd", the main character depends upon a slow-witted accomplice to inform him when a political candidate was boring. In my case, my buttocks provided the same information, squirming in the seat. My senses being captivated by the IMAX Vista, the technology and expectedly decent performances by Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman, I was admittedly overwhelmed by Heath Ledger's Joker. Why then, was my anatomy signaling that something was wrong? I found the answer in searching my memory to the most recent Indiana Jones. The same fidgeting occurred, breaking into my bonding with the film and intruding into my experience. In Indiana Jones, quite unlike myself, I found myself mentally screaming during some of the action sequences (paraphrasing Elaine's character in Seinfeld watching "The English Patient") "End already! End already!" There is a balance between action and storyline. Where Nolan was sensitive to this in his first Batman outing, he seems to have fallen prey to "if five minutes of action is good, it stands to reason that ten would be twice as good." Unfortunately, this line of reasoning is false. If I want action with no or a weak storyline, I'll watch Stallone. My expectations were far higher in this case. Although it was to be expected that this would be a dark and brooding film, even though I viewed it on an enormous screen I could not see the action clearly as it faded into shadowy blurs. IMAX was clearly unnecessary unless you enjoy a few seconds of vertigo in overhead helicopter shots. Where was Christian Bales? The Joker was more the lead in this film. This was yet another imbalance. In his statements, the Joker speaks of his love of chaos. Oddly, his chaos was so systematic and well planned that its very nature contradicts itself. Setting that faux pas aside, the Joker and Batman represent two poles of human nature: Chaos versus control. The Joker is more consistent with the chaos but Batman, to give him greater depth, should lose some of the compulsive rigidity he shows. The closest to this he demonstrates was when he permitted a criminal (Eric Roberts)to drop to the

demonstrates was when he permitted a criminal (Eric Roberts)to drop to the ground, obviously injuring his legs. At that moment, there was a sense of wanting to clap my hands as Batman finally showed some of his dark side. The film was worth seeing--not in IMAX, but as DVD. I have concerns about the director, who seems to be moving more in the direction of Hollywood glitz and away from the more symmetrical action/storyline shown in his first Batman. One final note: As a viewer I applaud Ledger's performance; as a psychologist I cannot help but wonder what the impact of his role had upon his psyche in such close proximity to the filming. If my suspicions are correct and his performance wins an Oscar, the cost will have been far greater than the limelight or salary he earned. Christian Bales, despite what some others believe, has shown himself to be an actor capable of extraordinary depth. The conflict between Batman and Bruce Wayne is often lost in quick transitions from one to the other or moments of silent reflection when one can only wonder what conflicts/thoughts are being processed at that moment. The setup is not very hard. Comcast's mistakes were my biggest problem, so be sure you know what kind of box you want and your cables are good ones. Picture very good. Although I have surround sound, the TV's sound is not bad in itself. Discount Jungle even registered it for me. Overall, I'm very satisfied. P.S.: One glitch. The instructions are not printed, but on a disk with a number of pdfs. Saw this reported before by reviewer. The company really should remedy this. Comment | Permalink

Angels & Demons by Dan Brown Edition: Mass Market Paperback Price: $9.99

I just returned from a cruise and promised myself that, at the suggestion of another writer, I would read this. "Better than the DaVinci Code," she said. I think not.nor would I tout "Code" as the gold standard against which I would judge a good thriller. Brown engages me first with a joyride in a space plane touching on sci-fi, a bizarre murder in an unlikely place and physics. From that point on, science metamorphoses into obscure pseudohistory, detailed descriptions of Rome and symbolism that would have Jung bite the tip off his pipe. Page after page, Brown lures and teases with a little science here, some technology there, an ancient mysterious brotherhood, the secrets of the Catholic church and on and on. Despite his camouflage, I spotted the antagonist--or villain if you prefer--soon after we encounter him. But Brown leaves me hungry; not for the ticking clock of destruction or convoluted intellectual ramblings. Where are the depths and dimensions of the characters? Langdon is a bland intellectual whose primal urges are hidden somewhere under his Harris tweed. He seems almost not to take notice of his lovely, vivacious, assertive and (implied) sensual partner. There is no explicit sexual tension until near the end and one is left to feel that she would be the dominatrix anyway. The writing and suspense carried me through most of the book. Admittedly, it was a page-turner until 3/4 of the way through. But the climax (no pun intended to the absent sexuality) was page-after-page of seemingly unending exposures of dark secrets and illuminations--or should I say Illuminati?--of unbelievable revelations that angered me and challenged my intelligence. Much as he had used intellect to lay the groundwork for the story and carry it through, Brown then drops my gray matter off St. Peter's basilica where it sploshes into globs of disbelief. The incredulity of the last 100 pages read as if written by someone with his editor, cattle prod in hand behind him, urging him to end the story. The presses are standing by! It felt like a rush to publish, Scotch-taping a score of incredible coincidences, congeries and secrets that resulted in my slamming the book closed, feeling seduced and tossed aside. Human Consciousness and Healing, January 1, 2007
As a clinical psychologist, I am always amazed when, after asking Christian patients if they believe in spiritual healing, they say yes, adding that only holy figures are capable of this gift and not themselves. They are unaware that "miraculous" healings have been reported since the biblical era, but the origins date back to shamanic, magico-religious healing traditions extending as far back as 15,000-40,000 years, during the Paleolithic era or that experimental studies have taken place since Bernard Grad's seminal work in the 1960s. In contemporary Western societies, culturally unorthodox, non-instrumental physical healing procedures are known by many names: Christian Science healing, faith healing, laying-on of hands, mental healing, prayer healing, psychic healing, spirit healing, spiritual healing, etc. Periodically, unorthodox healing methods reach public attention through the unscrupulous acts of self-proclaimed healers as well as their debunkers, whose sensational tactics rival those they seek to discredit While more vocal and negatively-biased skeptics continue to unmask ever-present charlatans in their attempts to confirm that these alleged phenomena have no place in society, serious investigations of alternate healing methods by dedicated, credible researchers have received little public or scientific attention or funding. The growing interest in alternate healing practices is the focus of a sociological study. McGuire and her associate examined the use of alternative healing systems among "middle-class, middle-aged, welleducated, socially, culturally and residentially established suburbanites". Although adherents continued to use conventional health care in addition to an alternative healing system, they were attracted to the latter's holistic belief systems and were not driven by medical crises, as had been assumed earlier. These movements offer transcendent, holistic cosmologies, integrating the individual, the world, and the universe through the incorporation of symbols of transcendent power and order. This suggests

incorporation of symbols of transcendent power and order. This suggests that there is more than physical healing being sought in such practices, something that lies beyond that "dreamt of in [our] philosophy." Consequently, the attractiveness of alternative healing practices cannot be fully explained by positing a loss of faith in conventional medicine or a need to ameliorate intractable physical disorders where conventional medicine has failed. Beyond these possibilities, the growing popularity of alternative healing practices suggests that they may address a deeper, broader, and more archaic human need in the healee and the healer. In his remarkable accomplishment developed over two decades, psychiatrist Daniel Benor has compiled the most comprehensive collation and annotated analyses of anecdotal, clinical and experimental studies into these types of healing. Having known Dan for over 20 years, I am impressed with his persistence and objectivity in gathering information, his insights into research methodologies while remaining in touch with his humanity. His 4 volumes are an act of love and legacy of good science dedicated towards a poorly understood, yet intensely interesting and another important aspect of the science of healing, core human needs and consciousness. I am honored to have been included in the first volume of this outstanding achievement. Comment | Permalink
Code 46 DVD ~ Tim Robbins Price: $12.99 Availability: In Stock

1 of 4 people found the following review helpful: Creating sci-fi from remnants, January 25, 2005
Lured by Tim Robbin's taste for the offbeat "Indie" (e.g., Jacob's Ladder"), Code 46 offered far less than it promises. More a mood piece than science fiction, writer Boyce is not Gattaca's Niccol in his piecing together of Gattaca sprinkled with Blade Runner. Nor does Code 46 have the chilling claustrophobia of 1984. Instead, although acted well, storylines are as vague as the form of the monolithic government that enacted the code. Compared with other sci-fi that offer more holistic views of alternate realities, Winterbottom's is fractured and at times nonsensical. I am warned when, after a film, I say to my wife "What did we just watch". Paraphrasing Gina Davis in The Fly, be warned, be very warned. Comment | Permalink

Jonas et al.'s Healing, Intention and Energy Medicine is a compendium of research from a conference on Science and Spirituality held in 2000 at which I was a presenter. As the author of chapter 14 (I do not receive royalties), I am as impressed with the final form of the conference presentations as I was with the researchers and conference in general. The public at large is generally unaware that healing and intentionality has been the subject of laboratory investigations for over three decades. From the initial forays of Dr. Bernard Grad and (healer) Oskar Estabany in examining the influence of human consciousness/energy on animals and plants to the sophisticated experimentation of mental intention on equipment by Radin, Jahn & Dunne and others, Healing, ntention and Energy Medicine is a fascinating odyssey into the study of nonordinary healing and untapped human potentials well worth the exploration. Jonas et al. have done justice to this body of work, presenting it in a clear, readable and entrancing form. Comment | Permalink

This Tornatore venture virtually oozes four decades of atmosphere and is beautifully embellished by punctiliously detailed sets, costumes, and threaded with lush musical themes. The life of a child abandoned on an ocean liner at the turn of the century("1900" played by Tim Roth),is recounted in the present and flashbacks by his friend Max(Pruitt Taylor Vince),an aging, down-on-his-luck trumpeter,to a pawn shop proprietor (Peter Vaughan). 1900's prodigious musical talents are displayed many times, but three instances are outstanding for their humor, drama and melancholy, respectively: the piano "duel" between 1900 and Jelly Roll Morton(Clarence Williams III); the rhapsodic pathos of a love theme as 1900 records a wax matrix while absorbed in the angelic face of a young woman outside his window(Mlanie Thierry), soon to be lost in a crowd leaving the ship--and him--behind; the brightly lilting tune he plays as the brakeless piano rolls about the ballroom in a turbulent sea with Max at his side. To refer to this story as mere character development understates its value. 1900 symbolizes a man, never having left the confines of the ship, who lives in a defined, finite world and who, though the piano finds infinitude in his imagination and music. Ultimately, however,he must confront the inevitable: to leave the ship for the seeming boundlessness of dry land or die in a state

to leave the ship for the seeming boundlessness of dry land or die in a state of non-existence. There is no record of his birth and only one recording of his work. Roth's subtle skills are brought to the fore in 1900' sometimes brilliant, sometimes naive--and always irreverant--character. "Legend" is fresh and challenging, admixing philosophy and fable into myth. After four viewings, there is always an overlooked detail, expression,or nuance missed previously.I may be satisfied after four more. Comment | Permalink
Methodological Approaches to Social Science: Integrating Divergent Concepts and Theories (150p) by Ian I. Mitroff Edition: Hardcover Availability: Out of Print--Limited Availability 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful: Typing Social Scientists, February 25, 2003
6 used & new from $10.00
Mitroff and Kilmann offer an eye-opening and elegant means of typing scientific thinkers. This has import in that it clariefies the fact that there are a variety of types of scientists, indicating that there are alternate forms of science, rather than one. They clearly present their concepts which I found exciting and a new way of conceiving others (and myself) within science. I recommend this as both a good book to cognitively reorient those whose views of science have become stultified and as a means of providing new scientists with a respect for types other than those adhering to the fundamental hypotheticodeductive methodology of prominence.
