| Very poor product, takes an age to start, takes me on an out of the way route. Now after some months will not work at all says to insert correct SD card, it's the same card thats been in it since I bought the D*mn thing, poor screen can hardly see it in day light. Only good thing I say for it is the window mount. ! Would never advise anyone to buy one. A total waste of money. No help from manufacturer (if you find them) Overall I would score it less than one in 1 to 10 | |

rek number 22 departs from the Royal Flying Doctor base at Dubbo on Sunday June 5, 2011 and we travel some 3,800 kms through some of the least populated parts of NSW, Queensland and South Australia on our way to our destination point in the Northern Territory.
The 2011 Outback Car Trek - Dubbo to Uluru
We didnt make Birdsville in 2010 due to floodwaters so in true Trek tradition were heading back there this year to see what we missed out on and day four sees us do what we couldnt last year travel the length of the Birdsville Track to spend the night at the old Ghan town of Marree. Thursday sees us enjoy a drive along the Oodnadatta Track to Coober Pedy where we can take a look at some of the underground opal mining operations. After we leave Coober Pedy hotels dont come much more remote than Mt Dare Hotel, situated on the Western edge of the Simpson Desert just 10km south of the Northern Territory border. Leaving Mt Dare on Saturday we travel east-west following the border of South Australia and the Northern Territory before we cut north and join the Lasseter Highway to travel the final 100 kms to Ayers Rock Resort. The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) delivers emergency and essential health care services to the people who live, work and travel in regional and remote Australia. From humble beginnings 82 years ago with one doctor, one pilot and one leased aircraft; the RFDS has grown to today include 53 aircraft and almost 1,000 staff stationed at 21 bases across Australia. The RFDS began as the dream of the late Rev. John Flynn, who dreamt of ensuring access to health care for the people of Outback Australia. In 1928, our first year, we treated 225 patients. Today, our doctors, nurses and medical specialists across Australia treat and transport over 750 patients a day thats 225 patients before lunchtime! The RFDS is best known for providing emergency aeromedical assistance. When you think of the Flying Doctor you invariably think of doctors, nurses and pilots flying to remote Outback locations to rescue and retrieve injured and seriously ill patients. While this is certainly a very important part of our Service, its not all we do. In fact, emergency medicine accounts for only two per cent of the work performed by the RFDS each day. The vast majority of our work is delivering essential health care services to the people in the bush. The RFDS is the most comprehensive aeromedical organisation in the world, with flying doctors, nurses, specialists and allied health professionals taking essential health care services to country communities. The Flying Doctor is now the flying dentist, flying dietician and flying dermatologist service as well ! On any given day, our team can be found performing GP clinics, remote consultations, inter-hospital patient transfers, dental services, mental health work, nursing and allied health services, health education, womens health, Indigenous health, primary health care, emergency retrievals, and training the next generation of rural doctors. Our mission is to provide excellence in aeromedical and essential health care to the people of regional and remote Australia and our passion is to help the people who need us the most. The RFDS believes the most important factors are people, patients and partnerships, which is why were thrilled to partner once again with the most important event in our calendar, the 22nd annual Outback Car Trek.
A small number of Trekkers will be joining us for their 22nd consecutive Trek, so a special welcome back to those intrepid souls. And of course a welcome back to those great many Trekkers who are now considered to be veterans of the event. Without your support The Doctor would struggle to provide the mantle of safety that has become so important to the people of the outback. It is refreshing each year to see a number of virgins sign up for their first Trek - you are the future of the Trek and we are sure you will enjoy each and every minute you spend travelling to places many Australians can only dream about. Dubbo is known as the hub of the west and is the unofficial headquarters of the ORANA region of NSW. Here the RFDS maintains an operational base that is home to 23 staff and handles some 2,000 aircraft movements per year. After the Just Cuts Cut-A-Rama on the Saturday evening we leave Dubbo Sunday morning and head west to our first night at historic Tilpa on the Darling River. Day two sees us head north into Queensland on the second night of the Trek, where we will enjoy Christmas dinner under the stars at the Noccundra pub.
Day 1 : Dubbo to Tilpa Sunday 5 June - 630 kms
The ORANA region is the largest and most diverse region in NSW. Covering an area of almost 200,000 kms it services a population of 97,000 people and encompasses 13 Local Government areas. The region is traversed by a number of river systems including the Darling and Macquarie, both of which we travel along during our first day. Dubbos local service clubs host our breakfast this morning at the RFDS Base at Dubbo Airport before we head west along the Macquarie River through some of the most famous sheep breeding country in the world. Leaving the Macquarie we track west to Mount Drysdale on the Kidman Way. Once home to 5,000 people, dont blink - all that is left are some abandoned gold mine shafts. From Mount Drysdale we head north-west to Louth, where we join the Darling River and follow it downstream to our overnight port of Tilpa. The smaller the town the better the night has always been our experience and the nine locals will make sure were not disappointed tonight. town of Noccundra at the last minute. The locals had less than 3 days notice to feed fuel and water 321 Trekkers, and they did a remarkably good job. So much so that we decided to include Noccundra in our itinerary again this year and with a little more notice the locals have decided to host an early Christmas dinner for us, complete with Santa Claus, Christmas Carols and bon-bons. Safe travelling in the Outback is all about effective communications. To ensure that all those who run the event, especially the medical and mechanical support teams, are in constant contact, Telstra Country Wide equips the Treks official vehicles with satellite phones and sends along a back-up crew who can provide internet access, even in the remotest areas. precious stones that are mined in the district. Another claim to fame is the number of residents who live below the ground to escape the searing summertime heat. Last year the hottest day was recorded at 47.8 degrees Celsius. Today is another relatively short day and from Coober Pedy we re-join the ruins of the original Ghan railway line at Oodnadatta. The rail line was re-routed from Tarcoola to Alice Springs in 1980 and Oodnadatta has languished ever since. We follow dirt roads parallel to the disused railway line and pass through the artesian fed Dalhousie Springs as we continue northward to Mt Dare, only 10 kms short of the Northern Territory border, where we will spend the night.
where we can enjoy some creature comforts on the banks of the Diamantina River.
Day 4 : Birdsville to Marree - Wednesday 8 June - 525 kms
Today we travel the iconic Birdsville Track between the Tirari, Strzelecki and Sturt Stony Deserts as we head toward the old Ghan town of Marree, and we stop at the Mungeranie Hotel and Roadhouse for lunch. The towns are few and far between in this part of the Outback, and we will still see glimpses of the historic Ghan train line that followed the route of the original overland telegraph line before the train line was moved in 1980. The Birdsville Track is one of the bestknown and loneliest tracks in Australia, and its inhabitants have been battling the searing heat, floods and mechanical breakdowns for over 100 years. The Track is a lifeline to the isolated settlements and stations along the way. Not much has changed since 1860 - the Track is still just that - a track through the desert and sandhills. Opened in the days
before reliable vehicles, good communications and air access in case of emergency, in modern times the RFDS keeps people along the Track in touch with the outside world.
Day 3 : Noccundra to Birdsville - Tuesday 7 June - 575 kms
In this part of Australia farms come pretty big, and the family owned Kidman pastoral empire farms some 125,000 square kilometres of local land. Founded in 1899 Kidman properties span across 3 states, and they grow around 200,000 head of cattle each year. We pass through one of their flagship operations Durham Downs on our way to the Daley family owned Arrabury Pastoral Company for lunch. Arrabury is no tiny property itself, covering 7,600 kms wrapping itself around the north-east corner of South Australia. Crossing the border into South Australia we enter the Strzelecki Desert and pass through Cordillo Downs, another property that lays claim to something big Australias largest shearing shed. In its hey day Cordillo Downs boasted 120 stands, and in 1888 there were 82,000 sheep shorn with hand shears. Its hard to imagine as we look around what is left of the shearing shed. From Cordillo we cross the unusually named Providence Creek as we head for Cadelga, then cross back into Queensland for the final leg into Birdsville
Day 5 : Marree to Coober Pedy -Thursday 9 June - 375 kms
After spending some time this morning at the Marree Aboriginal School we head off along the Oodnadatta Track, touching on the edge of Lake Eyre South near Curdimurka on our way to William Creek. William Creek is the half-way point between Adelaide & Alice Springs and with a bustling population of 4 lays claim to being South Australias smallest town. On the original Ghan rail line, William Creek is also home to Australias largest property - Anna Creek Station. Anna Creek is another Kidman owned property and is roughly two-thirds the size of Tasmania. At William Creek we head west and pass through the Dog Fence into the opal mining town of Coober Pedy for the night.
Day 7 : Mt Dare to Yulara (Ayers Rock) Sat June 11 - 630 kms
Our last day of the 2011 Trek sees us cross from South Australia into the Northern Territory as we head northwest, through the town of Finke and past the Lambert Centre of Australia. They say if you could balance the continent on a pin, this is where youd put the pin. The Finke River is popularly regarded as being the oldest river in the world and the riverbed is believed to be some 400 million years old. We hit the Stuart Highway at Kulgera where we have lunch, and then we continue along the Mulga Park Road through Victory Downs and Eagle Bore to the Lasseter Highway at Curtin Springs. From there it is a 100 kms drive along the tar to the Yulara Resort where we will arrive in plenty of time to check in, shake off the dust and get ready for our cocktails as we watch the changing colours of Uluru at sunset.
Day 2 : Tilpa to Noccundra - Monday 6 June - 625 kms
On day two we continue our north-westerly travels, crossing the Paroo River at Norma Downs, and we cross the Nancannia Ranges on our way into Tibooburra where we will have lunch. From Tibooburra we pick up the Silver City Highway on our way into Queensland, crossing the border at Warri Gate, past the Bulloo Lakes before we arrive at Noccundra where we bed down for the night. With the Cooper deciding to flood the Birdsville Track for the first time in 21 years on last years Trek, we had to divert to the tiny
Day 6 : Coober Pedy to Mt Dare - Friday June 10 - 475 kms
Coober Pedy is a large town for this part of Australia - more than 1,000 residents and is home to Australias only underground church. The town is well known as the opal capital of the world, due to the amount of
