Notes on chip component replacement Never reuse a disconnected chip component. Notice that the minus side of a tantalum capacitor may be damaged by heat. Flexible Circuit Board Repairing Keep the temperature of the soldering iron around 270 C during repairing. Do not touch the soldering iron on the same conductor of the circuit board (within 3 times). Be careful not to apply force on the conductor when soldering or unsoldering. CAUTION Danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace only with the same or equivalent type.
NW-S603/S605/S703F/S705F/S706F SECTION 1 SERVICING NOTES
UNLEADED SOLDER Boards requiring use of unleaded solder are printed with the leadfree mark (LF) indicating the solder contains no lead. (Caution: Some printed circuit boards may not come printed with the lead free mark due to their particular size) : LEAD FREE MARK Unleaded solder has the following characteristics. Unleaded solder melts at a temperature about 40 C higher than ordinary solder. Ordinary soldering irons can be used but the iron tip has to be applied to the solder joint for a slightly longer time. Soldering irons using a temperature regulator should be set to about 350 C. Caution: The printed pattern (copper foil) may peel away if the heated tip is applied for too long, so be careful! Strong viscosity Unleaded solder is more viscou-s (sticky, less prone to flow) than ordinary solder so use caution not to let solder bridges occur such as on IC pins, etc. Usable with ordinary solder It is best to use only unleaded solder but unleaded solder may also be added to ordinary solder. NOTE THE IC201, IC2701, IC3005 AND IC3007 ON THE MAIN BOARD REPLACING Replacement of IC201, IC2701, IC3005 and IC3007 on the MAIN board used in this set requires a special tool NOTE THE MAIN BOARD REPLACING When the MAIN board is replaced, format it according to the following.
To cancel formatting Select Cancel in step
and press the
button.
To return to the previous menu Press the DISPLAY/HOME button.
Note Do not format the built-in flash memory of the player using Windows Explorer.
We do not guarantee operation for all computers even if they meet the above System Requirements. Not supported by the following environments: Personally constructed computers or operating systems An environment that is an upgrade of the original manufacturer-installed operating system Multi-boot environment Multi-monitor environment Macintosh

Playing the Recorded Songs (Rec Data)

* Compression rate depends on song.
AAC: AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is a common audio compression technology developed by the MPEG working group of the ISO (International Organization for Standardization). The AAC format produces the same sound quality as that of the MP3 format, with a smaller file size. Linear-PCM: Linear-PCM is an audio recording format without digital compression. You can listen to the sound with the same quality as CD music by recording with this format.
What is bit rate? Bit rate refers to the amount of data used to store each second of audio. Generally, higher bit rates provide better sound quality, but require more storage space for the same length of audio.
Advanced Features.what are Format and Bit Rate? What is the relationship between bit rate, sound quality, and storage size? Generally, higher bit rates provide better sound quality, but require more storage space for the same length of audio, so you can store fewer songs on the player. Lower bit rates enable you to store more songs, but at a lower sound quality. For details on supported audio formats and bit rate, see pages 108 and 109.
If you import a song from a CD to SonicStage at a low bit rate, you cannot improve the songs sound quality by selecting a high bit rate when transferring the song from SonicStage to the player.
Playing Songs without Pauses
If you import songs to SonicStage in ATRAC* format and transfer them to the player, you can play them on the player continuously, without pauses between the songs. For example, an album that includes a long recording of a live performance with no pauses between songs can be played continuously without pauses after the songs are imported to SonicStage in ATRAC* format and then transferred to the player.
For songs to be played without pauses, you must import all the songs on a single album without pauses at one time to the SonicStage software in the same ATRAC* format. * Except ATRAC Advanced Lossless.
How is Song Information Imported to the Player?
When you import CD songs into SonicStage, SonicStage automatically retrieves information about the songs (such as album title, artist name, and song name) from a CD database service (CDDB, the Gracenote CD DataBase) on the Internet at no charge. When songs are transferred to the player, this song information is transferred along with the songs. Having this information attached to your songs makes possible various advanced searching features of the player.

Troubleshooting FM Tuner (NW-S703F/S705F/S706F only)
You cannot hear the FM broadcast well. Reception is weak and sound quality is poor.
The receiving frequency is not fully tuned in. Select the frequency manually to improve reception ( page 63). The radio signal is weak. Listen to the FM broadcast near a window since the signal may be weak inside buildings or vehicles. The headphone cord does not extend enough. The headphone cord functions as an antenna. Extend the headphone cord as far as possible. An apparatus emitting radio signals, such as a mobile phone is being used near the player. When using such apparatus as mobile phones, keep them away from the player.
The FM broadcast is affected by interference.
Noise occurs while recording.
If the optional accessories for recording with the player has a record level shift switch, it is not set correctly. Set the switch to the position corresponding to the audio device connected. For details, see the operation guide of the optional accessories for recording with the player.

When the synchronized recording is set, sound may not be detected on songs that, for example, slowly fade in or out, depending on the recorded song. Disable the synchronized recording, and record the songs ( page 71).
There is no beep sound when the player is operated. The player gets warm.
Beep is set to Beep OFF. Set Beep ON in the Beep menu ( page 49). While charging, the player may become slightly warm.
