This document describes the setup and configuration requirements for the HP OmniBook 6000 notebook PC to function as an EFC Server. This is to be used as a guide for configuring the PC, installing the software, and basic operation of the EFCM server application The sections in this document are as follows: System Requirements Describes the hardware requirements for EFC Server operation. PC Setup and Configuration Describes the hardware configuration and CMOS setup. Windows 2000 Setup and Configuration Describes operating system configuration. EFC Management Applications Installation Describes steps for installing EFCM software. IIS Setup and Configuration Describes Web server and FTP server installation EFCM Operation Describes user operation of the EFC Management Services software.

System Requirements

The following table lists the minimum requirements for an EFC Server PC platform along with the actual capabilities (compliance) of the HP OmniBook 6000 PC. The CD-ROM is required to install the EFC Management Applications software, both initially and subsequent updates. HP has decided to swap the internal Zip drive with an internal CD-ROM drive during the EFCM software installation process, and then swap back to the internal Zip drive for normal operation.
The OmniBook 6000 does not appear to support this capability. The purpose for auto boot is to allow the EFC Server to automatically resume operation after a power failure. The managed switches will automatically power up and resume operation, so it is highly desirable for the EFC Server to automatically resume its monitoring activities without the need for operator intervention.

PC Setup and Configuration
The OmniBook PC must be setup with a specific configuration for it to function properly as an EFC Server. This level of setup must be performed anytime a PC is configured from scratch. The following subsections describe the requirements for setting up disk partitions and configuring certain CMOS setup options.

Drive Assignments

The EFC Management application software requires the following logical disk drive assignments: C: Hard drive partition D: Internal Zip drive -or- Internal CD-ROM drive (used only for recovery or upgrade)

CMOS Setup

Certain options must be configured properly in the CMOS Setup Utility. The Setup Utility is entered by pressing the F2 key when prompted immediately after applying power to the HP OmniBook PC. All options may be left at their default settings except for specific options under the Power (APM) tab as listed below. Since the PC will always have an AC power source, there is no need to have any level of power saving options enabled. In fact, you must not allow the PC to ever enter Hibernate mode because the PC must continue to run 24x7 to monitor the switches. Install LAN Card

Before proceeding with Windows 2000 installation, make certain you have installed the 3Com 10/100 Type III CardBus PC Card in the CardBus slots.

Windows 2000 Setup and Configuration
To restore the Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional operating system onto the HP OmniBook 6000 PC, you must use the HP System Recovery CDs that comes with the PC. See the README.TXT file on Disk 1 of the System Recovery CD for specific instructions on performing a factory installation of Windows 2000. Note that the PC comes with recovery CDs for both Windows NT Workstation 4.0 (single CD) and Windows 2000 Professional (two CDs). Be sure to use the System Recovery CD for Windows 2000 Professional (the dual CD set). Since this process requires the use of a CD-ROM drive, you will need to replace the internal Zip drive with an internal CD-ROM drive prior to performing the installation.

Power Options

The default power options selected during Windows 2000 installation allow the system to enter standby and hibernate modes after a period of inactivity. These defaults must be changed to prevent the PC from ever entering either of these modes. This can be done by selecting a predefined power scheme that never allows the system to enter standby or hibernate modes. You must perform the following steps to change the default power options: 1. Open the Control Panel. 2. Double-click the Power Options icon. 3. Select the power scheme named Always On (see example below) 4. Click the OK button.

Internet Information Server Setup and Configuration
EFCM requires a standard Web Server and FTP Server to be installed and configured properly on the HP OmniBook PC. The Web Server is used by the client application to access online help files, and the FTP Server is used by the client application to move files back and forth between the client and server as necessary. Windows 2000 includes a Web Server and FTP Server as part of an optional component called Internet Information Services (IIS). This component is not automatically installed during the system recovery process, and must be installed and configured separately. You must perform the steps described in each of the following subsections to install IIS 5.0 and configure the Web Server and FTP Server appropriately for EFCM use.

IIS 5.0 Installation

You must perform the following steps to install the Internet Information Server: 1. Open the Control Panel. 2. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. 3. Click the Add/Remove Windows Components to display the following dialog box:

4. Place a check mark in the box next to the Internet Information Services (IIS) component. 5. Click the Details button to display a list of the sub-components in IIS 6. Remove the check mark from the following sub-components since these are not required for EFCM operation: FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions SMTP Service Visual InterDev RAD Remote Deployment Support 7. Click the OK button, then the Next button. 8. When prompted with Please insert the Compact Disc labeled Service Pack Files into your CD-ROM drive, click the OK button. 9. When prompted with Insert Service Pack Files into the drive selected below, enter c:\i386 in the edit box, then click the OK button.

Web Server Configuration

The Web Server is used to download and install the EFCM client application to remote workstations, and to provide access to online help information from the EFCM application once installed. Installation of the EFC Management Applications software on the server automatically installs the appropriate web files to the default web publishing directory (c:\inetpub\wwwroot), and no additional web server configuration is required specifically for EFCM use.

FTP Server Configuration

The FTP Server requires the following configuration settings for EFCM to function properly: The FTP Server home directory must be located at c:\inetpub\ftproot. This is the default configuration when IIS is first installed, so you do not need to configure this. The FTP Server must accept anonymous connections. This is the default configuration when IIS is first installed, so you do not need to configure this. The FTP Server home directory must have both read and write access permissions. The default setting for the home directory is read-only, so you must follow the steps described below to enable write permissions in the FTP Server home directory. A virtual directory must be created to provide FTP read-only access to the EFCM program files. You must follow the steps described below to create the virtual directory.
The following steps describe the procedure to configure the FTP Server home directory for read/write access and to create a new virtual directory for accessing the EFCM program files. 1. Open the Control Panel 2. Double-click the Administrative Tools icon 3. Double-click the Internet Service Manager icon 4. Expand the tree in the Internet Information Services panel to display the following two items: Default FTP Site Default Web Site 5. Right-click the Default FTP Site item and select Properties from the menu. 6. Click the Home Directory tab in the Default FTP Site Properties dialog box. 7. Place a check mark in both the Read and Write boxes, then click OK. 8. Right-click the Default FTP Site item again and select New, Virtual Directory. 9. Click the Next button in the Virtual Directory Creation Wizard. 10. Enter the name EfcMan in the Alias box, then click Next. 11. Enter the path c:\Program Files\EFCM in the Path box, then click Next (note: if EFCM has not yet been installed you must manually create this folder before you will be allowed to create the virtual directory). 12. Leave the Read option checked and the Write option unchecked, then click Next. 13. Click the Finish button.

EFC Management Applications Installation
Install the EFCM software on the OmniBook PC by performing the following steps: 1. Insert the HP EFC Management Applications CD into the CD-ROM drive, and run the installation program named d:\hpServerInstall.exe. 2. The installer program will guide you through the installation process

Iomega QuikSync

Included in the EFC Management Applications installation is the Iomega QuikSync application, which is used to automatically backup all EFCM data to a Zip drive. This application is installed and configured automatically, so no additional configuration is necessary. When the entire EFC Server configuration procedure is complete, you must power off the PC and replace the internal CD-ROM drive with an internal Zip drive for proper to allow the QuikSync application to function properly.

EFCM Operation

Once Windows 2000, EFCM, and the Web and FTP servers have been installed and properly configured, you remove the internal CD-ROM drive from the HP OmniBook 6000 PC and replace it with the internal Zip drive. Do this while the PC is powered-off. Since the EFCM server application is installed as a Windows 2000 service, operation automatically begins after a power-on or restart of the HP OmniBook PC. This is an important aspect of the EFCM server application, because it continuously monitors status of the Fibre Channel switches, directors, and fabrics, and alerts users via SNMP or e-mail if important system events occur, regardless of whether or not a user is logged-in to Windows 2000. Once the EFCM software has been installed and configured, and you reboot the PC, the EFC Management Services application automatically starts. When you login to Windows 2000, you will see two windows displayed: the EFC Management Services window, and the EFC Manager Login window. Each of these windows is described in section 7.1 and section 7.2 respectively. You control the EFCM Server using the Windows Service Control Manager in the Administrative Tools folder under Windows Control Panel. Since the application is installed as a Windows 2000 service, it automatically starts whenever the server PC is booted. Ordinarily, you should not need to stop the service or change its startup parameters, but if you do, it should be done from the Service Control Manager as described in section 7.3 below.

EFC Management Services Window
An example of the EFC Management Services window is displayed below. Its purpose is to display operational status of the EFCM server. There are three potential statuses that are represented by a graphical icon both in the window title bar and on the bottom status line of the window. Green Circle Fully operational Yellow Triangle An internal problem has been detected, however operations continue. Red Diamond A fatal problem has been detected and operations have ceased.

The EFC Management Services window cannot be closed by clicking on the x in the upper right corner of the windows. The only way to close the window is to stop the EFC Management Services via the Windows Service Control Manager as described in section 7.3.

EFC Manager Login Window
When EFC Management Services starts, it automatically starts the EFC Manager user interface and displays the EFC Manager Login window. This window cannot be closed by clicking on the x in the upper right corner of the window. The only way to close the EFC Manager Login is to stop the EFC Management Services via the Windows Service Control Manager (see section 7.3). Doing so, however, stops all active monitoring of the Fibre Channel switches, directors, and fabrics.

Service Control Manager
You stop and start the EFCM Server application using the Windows Service Control Manager. Do not stop the application through the Windows Task Manager by ending the task. To access the Service Control Manager from the Start Menu, click the Settings menu item, then click Control Panel. Double-click the Administrative Tools icon, then double-click the Services icon to display a Services dialog similar to the following example. From here, you can stop and start the service or change its startup parameters.
As seen in the above example, the EFCM service is called EFC Management Services. When the service is running successfully, you will see two windows: EFC Management Services window EFC Manager Login window
Each of these windows is described in earlier sections.
