The Angelica Cantanti Con Brio Choir

Director: Rehearsals:

Rita Docter Accompanist: Jane Horn Ages: Grades 2-4 Mondays 4:45 to 5:45 p.m., St. Michaels Lutheran Church, 9201 Normandale Boulevard
Philosophy: The Con Brio Choir will sing mainly in unison; then rounds, canons, partner songs, and simple harmony will be added to the repertoire. The main purpose is to learn to sing beautifully and correctly using the best of choral literature from a variety of cultures. Performance opportunities can help the groups achieve this goal, but it is the learning that goes on in the weekly rehearsals that is most important. To sing beautifully and correctly, singers learn proper posture, correct breathing to produce a free floated tone and sensitively shaped phrases, good diction and articulation, how to release tension in the body, and how to listen and blend. Other important objectives for the singers are to learn to focus and concentrate on all aspects of music-making; to work as a caring, well-disciplined team; to start to learn to read music; to become aware of music history, musical styles, and the place of music in various cultures; and to become aware of the power of music as a form of expression. Director Rita Docter: Ms. Docter has been a member of the Angelica Cantanti conducting staff since 1986. During that time she has conducted the Varsity, Ensemble and Prep/Con Brio Choirs and served as Artistic Coordinator. She graduated from St. Olaf College with a degree in Music Education. Ms. Docter has taught choral music at Bakersfield High School in California, Sandburg Junior High in Robbinsdale, and Wayzata Elementary Schools. For almost 25 years, she was director of the childrens choirs at Community of the Cross Lutheran Church in Bloomington. Ms. Docter is the writer of the BRAVO Music Appreciation Series for elementary age children. She has written educational materials and helped plan educational events for the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra and the Cavani String Quartet from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Ms. Docter has worked as a guide for the Minnesota Orchestra Kinderconzerts and has taught Kindermusik to preschool children and parents. She has also been active in the American Suzuki Association, serving on the National Board of Directors and writing a column for parents in the Association newsletter. She is a member of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), and the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA).

Water Under Ice (listen to soprano part) In the bleak midwinter, frosty winds made moan, Earth as hard as iron, water like a stone Show had fallen snow on snow, snow on snow. In the bleak midwinter, a long time ago. Frozen woodland shining bright, crystal paradise. Theres a music in my soul like water under ice. Here the wren has made a home. Hear the song she sings! Warmer days will surely come. I hear the rush of wings. Here the deer have made their bed to gather for the night Hounds are bounding through the open endless fields of white. Swiftly rising orange moon, twilight coming on. Darkness comes to comfort me and hover like a song. BRIDGE: Falling down, lifted up by snow from sky Wave your wings, Night is nigh Falling up, looking down you fly, Falling down, lifted up by snow from sky Darkness brings a lullaby. Wave your wings. Night is nigh. Now we make a shelter here. Then we crawl inside. Come my sister, calm your breath Heres a place to hide Snow is falling, snow on snow, silencing the town. In the morning we will leave an angel on the ground, an angel on the ground.
