Sports Documentary - Sports provide us with real life drama. However, sports documentaries give us a deeper
look inside the lives of athletes. Stark County is full of legendary athletes of the past, present, and future in all avenues of sports. Do you have a great comeback story to tell? An athlete that overcame adversity to succeed? A tragic story that the world never got to see the athlete they were meant to become? [Documentary 15 minutes or less.]
Green Documentary - Now, more than ever, it is crucial to understand going green. Is there a problem
regarding the environment that you want to see fixed? Is there a Green movement happening that the world needs to know about? Are there companies that are implementing Green technologies that will change our lives? [Documentary 15-30 minutes.]
Story of Stark - We live here, we work here, we have families here, and we play here. Whatever your story, issue,
or view of the area is, share it with us, move the audience, and make a difference. Stark County, this is your chance to tell your story and have your voice heard. [Documentary 15 minutes or less.]
Music Video - Ever since 1981, music and video have been inexorably connected. Once considered a strictly
commercial craft, the music video has launched the careers of many critically-acclaimed, contemporary directors. Do you have a music video featuring an artists original work? A short piece showcasing your artistic vision, as well as that of the musicians? [Video 10 minutes or less.]
Thriller/Horror Movie - Horror films are unsettling movies that strive to elicit the emotions of fear, disgust,
panic, alarm, shock and horror from viewers through the means of macabre and the supernatural, thus frequently overlapping with the fantasy and science fiction genres. Horror also frequently overlaps with the thriller genre. Horror films center on the dark side of life, the forbidden, and strange and alarming events. They deal with the viewers nightmares, vulnerability, hidden worst fears, alienation, repulsions, terror of the unknown, and the fear of death and dismemberment. Although a good deal of it is about the supernatural, any film with a morbid, gruesome, and surreal content may be termed horror; conversely, many stories of the supernatural are not horror. Scare us, I dare you! [Movie 15 minutes or less.]
Narrative - Narrative is generally accepted as possessing two components: the story presented and the process
of its telling, or narration, often referred to as narrative discourse. Story is a series of represented events, characters (or agents for some), and actions out of which the audience constructs a fictional time, place, and causeeffect world. Tell us a story, entertain us, and captivate the audience. [Movie 15 minutes or less.]
Animation - Animation is the rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D or 3-D artwork or model positions
in order to create an illusion of movement. We know animation is much more than that: it makes us laugh, makes us cry, and brings back memories of Saturday morning cartoons. For this category, keep it clean. [Animation 15 minutes or less.]

General Rules

1. Entries must be postmarked by the deadline date. Entries post-marked after that deadline date will not be considered for the program. 2. All works must be submitted on DVD for pre-screening. Please do not send film reels or original material. 3. Screeners will not be returned. Please do not send self-addressed stamped envelopes.
4. Short Films must not have had any commercial theatrical or television play in the US. Films must not have been broadcast on the Internet. 5. Music Videos must use original songs that you have been granted permission to use. No use of or remake of professional works will be considered. 6. If you want to replace your original submission with an upgraded version, you must submit a new DVD clearly labeled with the entry number and Replacement Copy. Any judging that was done with the original submission will not be discarded. Any future judging will be done with the new copy. 7. The Canton Film Festival does not present sponsored works (such as training films or commercials produced for client). Only independently produced films and videos are appropriate for this competition. Artists must have final creative control over their work to be eligible. 8. Please make sure to read all of the terms and conditions. 9. All works selected must be available in finished form by September 1st, 2011 for inclusion in the festival. 10. You will not receive style points for fancy packaging. It is wasteful and costly to send DVDs in hard plastic covers. We encourage you to ship everything in paper sleeves. 11. Any prizes or awards due to any entry will be presented to the person or entity who submitted that entry.

Awards

Each category will consist of a trophy and a prize of a minimum of $250 and a maximum of $500, depending upon the amount of submissions per category. A panel of judges will be chosen to vote on the award winning films in each category. Judges will be announced on CantonFilm.com. Additional sponsored awards & prizes will be announced in the future and posted on CantonFilm.com. There may be additional awards given at the prerogative of the staff of the Canton Film Festival. If we see something that stands out to us, we will give it the recognition we think it deserves. All awards, regardless of category will be paid to the person who submitted that winning entry. Dissemination will be the responsibility of that person as he/she sees fit.

Screening Requirements

If your film or music video is selected for exhibition, please be advised that the Festival will require: An uncompressed High Quality Digital Video Format (For example, QuickTime Files on DVD DATA Disc or Hard Drive) or on a Blu-Ray Disc. Press kits with photo stills (color and black & white) Headshots of Director(s) and Writer(s) Biographies of Director(s) and Writer(s) Film trailers, clip reels, posters, postcards, and EPKs, if available. Entry Fees Payment in US dollars may be made by check, money order, American Express, Visa, or Mastercard. Checks or money orders (from a US bank in US Dollars only) should be made payable to Film Independent. The film title must be clearly printed on all checks/money orders. Do not send cash. Labeling For all submissions, include the title and running time on the DVD. Multiple Entries You may submit more than one film or music video, but each one must be on a separate DVD and must be accompanied by its own submission form and entry fee. Shipping All costs for shipping materials to and from the Canton Film Festival are the responsibility of the sender. Ship your DVD in a protective envelope. The Festival recommends bubble-pack envelopes over fiber-pack envelopes as the fiber type can lead to damaged DVDs and DVD players. The Festival is not responsible for damage to submitted materials incurred in shipping. Receipt of Entries For Confirmation of receipt, include a self addressed stamped postcard with each entry. The festival will not confirm receipt of submitted materials by telephone or e-mail. Note Films submitted to the festival may be used in a promotional DVD or future promotional materials.

Project History A new enterprise The Miller-Starr Opera House was built in Canton in 1893 to accommodate traveling stage performances. Age of motion pictures The building was purchased and renovated by W.A. Collins in the 1930s and opened as the Canton Theatre in 1937, hailed as the nest movie house in Northeast Missouri. Cantons movie house Opportunity The beautiful Art Deco building sat vacant for decades, occasionally serving as ofce space. Canton eventually weathered oods, a tornado, res and economic downturns. The community now has the unique opportunity to rebuild its homey downtown district. It takes a community In 2005, the Canton Area Arts Council began plans to revitalize Cantons downtown, beginning with the theatre. Many citizens came together, and Lewis Street Playhouse was born. The group applied and received a Missouri Neighborhood Assistance Grant to help with renovations. Lights, camera, action! The 5,000 square foot space has been renovated to include stadium-style seating, state-of-the-art audio system, updated art deco-inspired decor and concession stand. The facility opened on March 1, 2008.
The Canton Theatre enjoyed much success through the late 30s, 40s and 50s. Through the impact of television and ownership changes, the theatre was open until 1978.
