Section 1194.31 Functional Performance Criteria
Section 1194.41 Information, Documentation, and Support
Section 1194.21 Software Applications and Operating Systems - Detail Voluntary Product Accessibility Template Criteria Supporting Features Remarks and Explanations The user can interact with the software through the keyboard. Keyboard controls result in modifications on the screen, which are often textual. (a) When software is designed to Fully Supports run on a system that has a keyboard, product functions shall be executable from a keyboard where the function itself or the result of performing a function can be discerned textually. (b) Applications shall not disrupt or Fully Supports disable activated features of other products that are identified as accessibility features, where those features are developed and documented according to industry standards. Applications also shall not disrupt or disable activated features of any operating system that are identified as accessibility features where the application programming interface for those accessibility features has been documented by the manufacturer of the operating system and is available to the product developer. (c) A well-defined on-screen Fully Supports indication of the current focus shall be provided that moves among interactive interface elements as the input focus changes. The focus shall be programmatically exposed so that Assistive Technology can track focus and focus changes. Supports with Exceptions
The print driver software was tested using a screen magnifier, high and low resolution displays, high contrast display options, varying cursor blink rates and widths, and various keyboard accessibility features (including FilterKeys, StickyKeys, and ToggleKeys). All of these accessibility features work in tandem with this software.
This software implements standard Windows handling of input focus a dotted box is visible around the item that has focus.
(d) Sufficient information about a user interface element including the identity, operation and state of the element shall be available to Assistive Technology. When an image represents a program element, the information conveyed by the image must also be available in text.
In the PCL5c, PCL6, PCL Mini, and PS3 drivers, the identity, operation, and state of most user interface elements are available to assistive technologies, but there are exceptions. In some cases, labels of display elements are missing. For example, in the Watermark tab of the Printing Preferences dialog for the PCL5c driver, the position of the watermark can be adjusted using a text entry box or a scroll bar. However, there is no label or text explaining the purpose or function of the scroll bar. In some cases, the labels for
display elements are insufficient. For example, in the PCL5c driver, all balloon help buttons are identified as balloon help with no indication as to what the help topic is. In the PS3 driver, all balloon help buttons are identified simply as button with no indication of the buttons function. In some cases, the state of a display element is not indicated. For example, in the Advanced Options [Color] dialog box of the PCL Mini driver, the options in the ICM Intent combo box are not read. Some information conveyed by images is not available in text. For example, in the PCL5c and PCL6 drivers, the information conveyed by the image in the Custom Paper Size dialog is not available textually, but it is important to help the user understand what is being set by the spin controls in this dialog. (e) When bitmap images are used to identify controls, status indicators, or other programmatic elements, the meaning assigned to those images shall be consistent throughout an application's performance. Fully Supports The meaning of all bitmap images is consistent throughout the print drivers.
All of the drivers have at least some textual information that is not available to assistive technology. In the PCL5c driver, the text in the About dialog is not available to the screen reader. Instead, the screen reader says no selected item for this information. In the PCL5c, PCL6, PCL Mini, and PS3 drivers, some of the information in the Features group box on the General tab of the Properties dialog is not read by the screen reader.
(f) Textual information shall be provided through operating system functions for displaying text. The minimum information that shall be made available is text content, text input caret location, and text attributes.
Fully Supports (g) Applications shall not override user selected contrast and color selections and other individual display attributes.
When the user adjusts the contrast in Windows, the selected contrast settings carry over into the print driver application. Certain Windows settings, such as font size, are not inherited into the
driver application windows, but this appears to be a Windows limitation rather than a problem with the drivers. (h) When animation is displayed, Not Applicable the information shall be displayable in at least one non-animated presentation mode at the option of the user. (i) Color coding shall not be used as Fully Supports the only means of conveying information, indicating an action, prompting a response, or distinguishing a visual element. (j) When a product permits a user to Not Applicable adjust color and contrast settings, a variety of color selections capable of producing a range of contrast levels shall be provided. (k) Software shall not use flashing or blinking text, objects, or other elements having a flash or blink frequency greater than 2 Hz and lower than 55 Hz. Fully Supports The print driver software contains no animation.
The PCL5c, PCL6, PCL Mini, and PS3 print drivers do not use color coding as the only means of conveying information. The drivers do not provide color and contrast adjustments. Color and contrast setting changes resulting from changing the Windows theme are honored in the drivers, however. The only flashing or blinking elements are the text cursors in the drivers. Those elements flash at less than 2 Hz, with the flash rate controllable through the Windows Accessibility Options dialog. Form elements, their identifiers, their functionality, and associated instructions or cues are available to the screen reader. There are some instances in the PCL6 and PS3 drivers where form instructions or feedback is somewhat unclear or not provided in a consistent manner, but these deficiencies are not major enough to interfere with the users ability to use the software. In the Custom Paper Size dialog of the PCL5c driver, the text A: Width and B: Length is read to describe the dimensions in the figure. This text is not useful for a screen reader user and may be confusing because it is not clear what the text is associated with.
PCL6, PCL Mini, PS3 Fully Supports PCL5c Supports with Exceptions
(l) When electronic forms are used, the form shall allow people using Assistive Technology to access the information, field elements, and functionality required for completion and submission of the form, including all directions and cues.
