Samsung's SE-S084D External DVD Writer Claims 25% Weight Loss Over Competition

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. also announced recently the introduction of its new slim external DVD writer, model SE-S084D optical disk drive (ODD), featuring a slimmer footprint than offerings from the competition. This new ODD is also claimed to provide high performance only taking use of USB power, thus eliminating the requirement for an electrical outlet. "Because netbooks are designed for ultra mobility, they aren't typically equipped with optical disc drives, which can potentially make booting from a CD or playing a DVD movie a problem," said John Suh, director of OMS sales and marketing, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. "But with the lightweight, portable SE-S084D Optical Disc Drive, you have the perfect on-the-go, stand-alone. And thanks to its USB BUS power source, you can write at maximum speed with no outlet in sight." Coming in a smooth design, with a chic metallic centerline, the new SE-S084D has won the iF Product Award Design, namely one of the world's top three leading design awards (or so they claim), sponsored by Hannover, Germany. The DVD writer has a rounded shape and compact size that is said to be 20% smaller than conventional DVD writers. Well, if they are comparing it with internal, normal DVD writers, that's quite understandable. Even more, this is supposedly 25% lighter than the company's conventional DVD writer, in order to accommodate to the nowadays always on-the-go mobile lifestyle. Engineered to be compatible with most operating systems, including Windows 7 and Mac OS, the SE-S084D will raise no problems with installing, nor will it induce hassle when writing. It also packs Buffer Under Run technology to prevent errors from writing speeds that exceed data transfer speeds, also ensuring the user can keep multi-tasking. Writing speeds claimed (I almost said provided) for various media include 24X CD-ROM, 24X CD-RW, 8X DVD±R recording, 5X DVD-RAM recording, 8X DVD+R Dual Layer recording, 6X DVD-R Dual Layer recording, 8X DVD+RW recording and 6X DVD-RW recording. Pricing, of course, not available yet.
