Notes on this manual
Screen pictures in this manual may be different from the actual displays in the supplied software. Contents of this manual are written for users with knowledge of using Microsoft Windows operating system. For details about computer operation, refer to the manual for the computer.
About display (LCD) and camera lens
The LCD of your CLI handheld is designed with precision technology. However, some pixels may not work or may light always in some cases. Also, brightness of the display may be inconsistent depending on the angle of view. These are caused by the nature of the LCD and do not indicate a malfunction. Please note that Sony does not guarantee for replacement or return in cases like those. Do not keep the LCD or camera lens directed toward the sun for long time. It may cause a malfunction. Please be careful when you locate it at an outdoor environment or place next to a window.
Testing for taking pictures/movies and recording voices
Prior to taking pictures/movies and recording voices, check that those files are normally saved in your CLI handheld or a Memory Stick media.

About the Battery Pack
Supplied Battery Pack The Smart Lithium function enables to exchange information about battery conditions between your CLI handheld and the Battery Pack. Your CLI handheld calculates the discharge rate according to the battery condition and displays the batterys remaining charge on the minute time scale (page 44). Remaining charge indicator If the battery runs out quickly while sufficient remaining charge is read in the display, recharge the battery fully to correct a misreading. However, this operation may not work in the following cases. You use the battery at a high temperature for a long time. You leave the fully-charged battery for a long time. The battery has been worn-out. Operating life The efficiency of a battery is gradually reduced as the battery is charged or time go on. If the operation time of your battery becomes shortened notably, you may need a new one. The operating life of your Battery Pack varies depending on storage environments, operating environments, and battery model.
Step 2: Charging the battery
Set up the stand of the cradle.
Connect the AC adapter to the cradle.
Connect the AC adapter to a wall outlet.
To a wall outlet
Open the interface connector cover of your CLI handheld.
Insert your CLI handheld at an angle into the cradle and lay it back to fit into place.
The POWER LED indicator of your CLI handheld turns on and charging starts.
It takes about four hours for your CLI handheld to be fully charged for the first time. The POWER LED indicator of your CLI handheld turns off when charging is completed.
Tip If your CLI handheld is charged frequently, subsequent charges will require less time. Notes If the battery in your CLI handheld is fully discharged, all data stored in the memory on your CLI handheld will be lost. Insert your CLI handheld into the cradle completely until the POWER LED indicator of your CLI handheld turns on. When you remove your CLI handheld from the cradle, hold the stand of the cradle.
The first time you turn on your CLI handheld, you are required to make initial settings. Follow the on-screen instructions to configure the initial settings and to get accustomed to operations on your CLI handheld.
Note To avoid losing the stylus, always put it back in its holder after use.
Tapping
The action of pressing lightly on the screen with the stylus is called tapping.
Dragging
Just as you can drag the mouse to select (and drag) text or move objects on your computer, you can use the stylus to drag an item on the screen of your CLI handheld. Press the stylus lightly on the item, and move it along the screen surface.
Using the Jog Dial navigator
Your CLI handheld is equipped with a Jog Dial navigator, which allows you to perform all major operations without the stylus. You can operate your CLI handheld using the Jog Dial navigator with just one hand.
Rotating the Jog Dial navigator
Rotate the Jog Dial navigator to select various items or to select an application to start.
Pressing the Jog Dial navigator
Press the Jog Dial navigator to decide the selected item or to run the selected application.
Rotating while holding down the Jog Dial navigator
Some applications support operations executed by rotating while pressing the Jog Dial navigator.

POWER Switch
Turning on your CLI handheld
Slide the POWER switch. Your CLI handheld turns on and the last screen you viewed is displayed. POWER Switch When your CLI handheld turns on, the POWER LED (page 32) indicator lights green.
When you turn on your CLI handheld for the first time, the Welcome screen is displayed (page 23). Note If you cannot turn on your CLI handheld, make sure that if the HOLD switch is not in the HOLD position. If you try to turn on your CLI handheld while the HOLD switch is in the HOLD position, the POWER LED indicator blinks green three times.
Turning off your CLI handheld
Slide the POWER switch again.
Tip You do not have to save data, quit an application, or perform any of the other shutdown procedures that your computer requires.

You can switch on/off the backlight of the LCD.

Status Bar
The status bar displays the following icons for all applications. Additional icons appear according to the applications in use. Tap this icon to display the CLIE Launcher screen. Tap this icon to display the menus of the current application. Tap this icon to open the Find dialog box. Tap this icon to display the Silk Plug-In dialog box. If the Silk Plug-In is installed, you can edit the display and functions of the Silk Screen area by switching the Silk Plug-In.
Silk Screen area
Displays the batterys remaining charge. The icon is displayed while the battery is being charged. Tap this icon to display the Battery Information dialog box.

Tap this icon to display the information for the Memory Stick media inserted in your CLI handheld. When the Data Protection switch of the Memory Stick media is in the Lock position, the icon is displayed. When you insert a Memory Stick-type device in your CLI handheld, the icon is displayed. When the Memory Stick media cannot be read normally, the icon is displayed. When the Memory Stick slot of your CLI handheld is empty, the icon is displayed.
Tap this icon to display the Adjust Volume dialog box. 1 Turns off the sound of your CLI handheld irrespective of the volume level setting. While the Muting mode is selected, the icon is displayed in the status bar. 2 Adjusts the volume level for playback sound of audio files or movie files. 3 Adjusts the volume level for System sound, Alarm sound, and Game sound. The setting affects the General in the Preferences.

Displays the current time. To change the display format, tap Time at the Formats in the Preferences.

Tap this icon to show or hide the Graffiti writing area (for Graffiti-compatible applications only).
The Palm Desktop for CLI software stored on the supplied CD-ROM must be installed on your computer. The software is used for data transfer between your CLI handheld and computer, and handling data such as Address Book on your computer.
b For details on the system required on a computer, refer to System required on a
computer on page 111. Notes Do not simply copy the Palm Desktop for CLI folder from the supplied CDROM to your computer. To install the software properly, follow the installation procedure described in this manual. If you use Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP operating system, log on with a User Name in the Administrators group before installing the software.
If you own another CLI handheld and the old version of Palm Desktop for CLI has been already installed on your computer, follow the procedure below to upgrade to the new version. * If you are using PEG-N710C or PEG-S300, refer to the official Sony CLI website (refer to the back cover of this manual for the URL). b For details, refer to Using data with another Sony CLI handheld in the Handbook.
Quit all applications running in Windows. Insert the supplied CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive of your computer.
The Installation Launcher window is displayed.
Click the Install button for the Palm Desktop for CLI software.
The setup program starts and the Welcome screen is displayed.
Click Next.
The Palm Desktop for CLI software installation begins. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Select the software you will use to synchronize your CLI handheld with your computer.
If you select Synchronize with Palm Desktop for CLI, Intellisync Lite software will not be installed. If you select Synchronize with Microsoft Outlook or Lotus Organizer, the Palm Desktop for CLI software and Intellisync Lite software will be installed.
The Setup Type window is displayed.
Select the setup type (Complete or Custom) and the destination folder (if Custom is chose). Fill in the user name in the Create User Account screen. Click Next.
The Connections dialog box is displayed.
Select USB or Serial Port.
The Ready to Install the Program dialog box is displayed, Click Install to start installation.
Follow the on-screen instructions to finish installing the Palm Desktop for CLI software. Click Finish.
Installation of the Palm Desktop for CLI software on your computer is completed.
Press the HotSync button operation is complete, When the HotSync
the following screen is displayed.
Double-click the Palm Desktop for CLI icon on the Windows desktop.
You can also click Start, select Programs (All Programs in Windows XP), Sony handheld, and click Palm Desktop for CLI to start the application. The Palm Desktop for CLI software starts.
Click the Date Book
The Date Book window is displayed. If you select the same date you entered the schedule for in step 2, you will see the entered schedule.
Using your CLI handheld to view image files and movie files taken with Memory Stickcompliant devices
Tip You can view the following file formats on your CLI handheld: Image files: JPEG (DCF) format, PictureGear Pocket format Movie files: Movie Player format (movies taken with your CLI handheld or converted using the Image Converter software), MPEG Movie format (MPEG1 format movies taken with a Sony Digital Still Camera or Handycam) For formats of pictures that can be taken with your Memory Stick compliant devices, refer to their respective operating instructions.
Insert the Memory Stick media to which you have saved image files and movie files in your CLI handheld.
Start CLIE Viewer to view image files or movie files. b For details, refer to Viewing/Playing back files (CLIE Viewer) on page 63.
Using voice recorder
Recording a voice memo
Select the Voice Rec (page 47) and start it.

Press the VOICE REC button.
The recording starts. Speak into the built-in microphone.
Tip As soon as the VOICE REC button is pressed, Voice Recorder automatically starts and then recording starts.
Press the button once again to stop recording.
Playing back a voice memo
A voice memo can be played using Voice Recorder or CLIE Viewer.

Listening to music
Note You need to perform the following procedure to listen to music on your CLI handheld.
Transfer music files you want to play, from your computer to your CLI handheld. b For details, refer to Music in the CLI Application Manual installed on your
computer.
Connect the supplied remote control and headphones to the CLI handheld.
Select the AudioPlayer icon in the CLIE Launcher screen (page 47) and start it.

Viewing computer documents on your CLI handheld (Picsel Viewer for CLIE)
Note Perform the following procedure before using Picsel Viewer for CLIE application.
Install Picsel Viewer for CLIE in your CLI handheld. Transfer documents from your computer to a Memory Stick media.
Use Memory Stick Import to transport documents to the Memory Stick media inserted into the slot of your CLI handheld.
Start Picsel Viewer for CLIE on your CLI handheld and view the documents transferred from your computer. b For details, refer to Picsel Viewer for CLIE in
the CLI Application Manual installed on your computer.
Connecting to the Internet
Note For an internet connection, you must have a network card that is compliant with your CLI handheld and you must be registered with an Internet Service Provider.
Installing applications in your CLI handheld
Install applications on your CLI handheld for your purposes. Browsing websites on your CLI handheld: NetFront v3.0 for CLIE (page 96) Exchanging e-mail: CLIE Mail (page 96) b For details about the necessary set-up of each application, refer to the CLI Application Manual installed on your computer.
Setting up a network card
Set up a network card, such as Wireless LAN card PEGA-WL100.
Tip For details on how to set up a network card, refer to the manual of each network card.
Insert the network card into your CLI handheld. Select the desired application in CLIE Launcher (page 47) and start it. Start browsing websites, sending or receiving e-mail.
Internet connection starts automatically.
Tip When you want to attach image files or movie files from your CLI handheld to an e-mail, you can select those files from the list displayed in CLIE Viewer. b For details, refer to Selecting/Deleting files (page 64).
Using the Bluetooth function
Note The communication speed and communication range vary depending on factors such as obstacles between devices, radio wave conditions, or specifications of a target device.
The Bluetooth function enables wireless communication within a range of approximately 10 meters. You can use the function to exchange data between your CLI handheld and other Bluetooth compliant devices. To use the Bluetooth function, select Bluetooth in the Preferences screen and set to Enabled for the Bluetooth item.

Start CLIE Viewer (page 63), tap the Menu icon, select Send from the Data menu, and tap a file you want to send.
Tip Sending image files You can select a method of sending data in the dialog box. (The dialog box below may not be displayed depending on your operating environment)
Sending Date Book data or Address data
Tap schedule data or address data you want to send, tap the Menu icon, and then select Send Event (for Date Book) or Send Address (for Address) from the menu.

After the Bluetooth Discovery dialog box is displayed, the list of Bluetooth compatible CLI handhelds within a range of the communication area is displayed on the Discovery Results dialog box. Tap to select a CLI handheld to which you want to send data.
The Bluetooth Progress dialog box will be displayed on both CLI handhelds. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Tip If you have renamed a target Bluetooth compatible device registered on CLI handheld, the device may be listed in the previous name when you detect target Bluetooth compatible devices. In this case, follow the procedure below.
1 Tap the Menu icon from the Bluetooth Preferences screen (page 82). 2 Tap Disable device name cache from the Options menu. 3 Detect target Bluetooth compatible devices.
Note To view or edit received data/files, applications supporting each data/file must be installed on the CLI handheld.
Performing a wireless HotSync operation with a computer
If you are using a Bluetooth compatible computer, you can perform a wireless HotSync operation between your CLI handheld and computer.

Using the Bluetooth function between your CLI handheld and other Bluetooth compliant devices
You can make full use of the Bluetooth function between your CLI handheld and other Bluetooth compliant devices.

Notes Prior to using applications, refer to Installing the software on your computer on page 65 to install the Palm Desktop for CLI software. The CLI Application Manual will be installed at the same time. The CLI Application Manual requires Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 5.0 or later to be displayed properly.
Opening CLI Application Manual
Double-click the CLI info icon on the Windows desktop.
CLI info window is displayed.
Select the manual by following the on-screen instructions.
Tips To close the CLI Application Manual, click the icon in the top right-hand corner in the CLI Application Manual window. You can minimize the CLI Application Manual window by clicking the icon in the top right-hand corner in the window. The minimized window can be reopened by clicking the CLI Application Manual button in the task bar. You can operate other software while the CLI Application Manual window is displayed on the Windows desktop.
Installing add-on applications on your CLI handheld
You can install applications with the supplied Installation CD-ROM by following the procedure below. Prior to installing applications, install the Palm Desktop for CLI software on your computer with the supplied Installation CD-ROM and connect the cradle to your computer.
Note The add-on applications are designed to operate on PEG-NZ90 only. Compatibility with other CLI handheld or Palm OS PDAs is not guaranteed.
Quit all applications running on the Windows operating system. Insert the Installation CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive of your computer.
The installation launcher window appears.
Click CLI Desktop. Click Install to the right of CLI Add-ons. Select the add-on applications to install. Click Next. Select the User. Click OK. Click Done. To install the application on your CLI handheld, press the HotSync button on the cradle.

This section describes how to solve common problems you may encounter when using your CLI handheld.
Preventing problems
Making a backup is recommended
We recommend that you make a backup of your data in case of any unexpected trouble. Backing up your data will ensure that it will be saved on the CLI handheld even when you have to perform a hard reset.
Making a backup using the Memory Stick Backup application
You can make a backup on the Memory Stick media using the supplied Memory Stick Backup application. This is the most convenient way to make a backup.

Making a backup using the HotSync operation
The data of your CLI handheld is backed up on your computer every time you perform a HotSync operation. You can lose the data in your CLI handheld when you perform a hard reset. But, if you make a backup with the HotSync operation, you can restore any data previously synchronized with your computer during the next HotSync operation. However, you cannot make a backup for the following applications or data using the HotSync operation. Applications or data installed from Memory Stick media or beamed. Some applications and driver files added later, or some data in applications.
For details on applications that cannot be backed up, refer to manuals for each application. If you want to make a complete backup, use the Memory Stick Backup application. For details on HotSync, refer to Exchanging and updating data using a HotSync operation in the Handbook.

My CLI handheld is not making any sounds

The backlight does not turn on when I adjust the brightness level
B If the brightness is set to the lowest level, the display may be illegible, but this is not a malfunction.
I cant read the screen properly
B Depending upon the angle of vision, the brightness may be uneven, but this is not a malfunction. You can adjust the brightness level by tapping the Brightness Adjustment icon in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen. If the backlight is set to off, you can turn it on by sliding the POWER switch for more than two seconds.
Software or Applications do not operate properly after I perform a soft reset
B If you encounter software or application problems (such as improper operations, unusual display, or freezing during a soft reset), after you performed a reset, the reset may not be completed properly. In this case, perform a soft reset once again. If you cannot solve your problem by performing a soft reset, try a hard reset. b For details, refer to Basic operations of your Sony CLI handheld:

I cannot use the Jog Dial navigator
B The Jog Dial navigator is not available for all applications.

B When the free space of the memory is insufficient, CLIE Launcher may not start. b On the Palm OS standard screen, tap Info from the Application menu to check the free space of the memory.

The applications on a Memory Stick media are not displayed
B You can display only the applications that stored in the folder /PALM/ Launcher. Move the application to the folder /PALM/Launcher. B When the battery of your CLI handheld is running low, the data on a Memory Stick media may not be displayed. Recharge the battery of your CLI handheld.

B Yes, they do. The CLIE Launcher groups are classified into groups such as Picture, Movie, etc., depending on what can be performed on your CLI handheld.

Performing initial checks
Checking your CLI handheld
B Is the Palm Desktop for CLI software installed?
B Is the connector between your CLI handheld and cradle dirty? To clean the connector, try repeatedly placing your CLI handheld in the cradle and taking it out again. B Are the CLI handheld and cradle correctly connected? Check that the battery icon on your CLI handheld screen is displayed, place your CLI handheld in the cradle properly.
B Is the memory space of your CLI handheld sufficient? Delete any unnecessary data and perform the HotSync operation once again. B Are you using the same user name that is used for another CLI handheld? Change the user name.
Checking your computer
B Is the operating system on your computer compliant? The following is the operating systems that are compliant with your CLI handheld. Operating systems other than the following are not supported. Note Upgrade versions of operating systems are not supported.
B If you are using Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP, log in as an Administrator. B Is the USB cable of the cradle connected to your computer? B Is the HotSync icon displayed in the task tray in the bottom right-hand corner of your computer screen? If not, select the Start menu, Programs (All Programs in Windows XP), Sony handheld, and HotSync Manager to start the HotSync Manager. B Is the Local USB check box in the menu (displayed by clicking the HotSync icon selected? If not, select the Local USB check box. B Is the USB port active? Check that the USB port works normally by connecting another USB device such as a USB mouse. B When using terminal extension products for laptops such as a port replicator, you may not be able to use either the port replicator or the USB port of your computer. B Quit applications other than the Palm Desktop for CLI software. If you cannot perform the HotSync operation even after following the above instructions, perform a soft reset by pressing the reset button of your CLI handheld. b For details, refer to Basic operations of your Sony CLI handheld: Restarting

The Palm Desktop for CLI software does not start or cannot be selected from the menu
B Is the Palm Desktop for CLI software properly installed on your computer? The hardware or the software of your computer may not be compatible with the Palm Desktop for CLI software. Uninstall the Palm Desktop for CLI software and reinstall.
The HotSync Manager does not start (the HotSync icon is not displayed in the bottom right-hand corner of your computer screen)
B Reinstall the Palm Desktop for CLI software.
Mail software on computer starts automatically when starting a HotSync operation
B A mail software that you do not use regularly or a mail software that is not installed is selected in Mail setup. Click the HotSync icon in the bottom right-hand corner of your computer screen and select Custom. Select Mail from conduit, click Change, start Mail setup and specify the mail software that you use regularly. B The settings of the mail software are not complete. Set the mail software properly on your computer.
I cannot perform a HotSync operation via a modem
B Check that you enter the correct phone number for the access point. B If you are using call waiting on your service line, tap Network and Phone in the Preference screen, and select the Disable call waiting check box in the Phone Setup screen and enter the correct phone number.
B If a prefix is required, select the Dial prefix check box in the Phone Setup screen and enter the correct phone number. B Check whether you can hear any noise coming from your service line. A line may be interrupted due to noises in some cases. B When using a modem other than a CF modem card, check the battery power of the modem.
B Check that your computer is turned on and the automatic shut-off setting in the power saving mode is disabled. B Check that the modem is properly connected to the service line. B Click the HotSync icon in the bottom right-hand corner of your computer screen, and check that the Modem check box is selected. B Check that the modem connected to your computer is turned on. You cannot turn on a modem with the Auto-Off feature by operating your CLI handheld. B Check that the modem is properly connected to the serial port of your computer. B Check that the Setup string setting in the Setup window of the HotSync Manager is proper. b For details, refer to the manual of your modem. B Reduce the setting for transmission speed if any problem arises only when the Speed setting in the Setup/Modem window is set to As fast as possible or some other specific speed. B Check that the Speed setting in the Setup/Modem window is appropriate for your modem. B Turn off the modem for a while and turn it on before connecting the modem.
I cannot perform an IR HotSync operation
B Check that the IR port of your computer is enabled. B An IR HotSync operation is not available if your computer does not have an IR port.
B Check that the HotSync icon is displayed in the task tray in the bottom right-hand corner of your computer screen and the HotSync Manager is running. When the HotSync Manager is running, the shortcut menu should be displayed by clicking the HotSync icon. B If you are using Windows 2000 Professional/Windows XP, click the HotSync icon in the bottom right-hand corner of your computer screen and check that the Beaming check box is selected. B If you are using Windows 98 Second Edition/Windows Me, click the HotSync icon in the bottom right-hand corner of your computer screen and check that the Local Serial check box is selected. B If you are using Windows 98 Second Edition/Windows Me, click the HotSync icon in the bottom right-hand corner of your computer screen and click the Local tab in the Setup window. Then check that the simulated port for IR communication is selected in Serial Port. B Check that Local and IR to a PC/handheld are selected in the HotSync screen on your CLI handheld. B Point the IR port of your CLI handheld directly at the IR port of your computer between 4 to 8 inches (approximately 10 to 20 centimeters) apart. Best results of beaming distance may vary depending on compatibility between devices. B You cannot perform an IR HotSync operation if the battery remaining is insufficient. After charging the battery of your CLI handheld, try the IR HotSync operation again. B Reduce the transmission speed. If you are using call waiting on your service line, tap Connection and IR to a PC/handheld in the Preferences screen. Then tap Edit, Details and specify Speed in the Details screen.
If you still cannot perform a HotSync operation
If you cannot solve your HotSync operation problem by following the troubleshooting items, follow the procedure below.
Check if any Unknown device is listed in the Device Manager on your computer.
Right-click My Computer and select Properties from the menu.
The System Properties screen is displayed.
If you are using Windows 2000 Professional/Windows XP, click the Hardware tab. Click the Device Manager tab. Check if there is a device marked with or.
Deleting the installed add-on applications in the Handbook.
The HotSync operation does not start and a message is displayed on the screen
B Move your CLI handheld away from the IR port of your computer except when performing an IR HotSync operation, as a malfunction may occur. You can also disable the IR feature by setting Beam Receive to Off from General in the Preferences screen. B If you set the IR port to search automatically for the target IR devices on your computer, follow the procedure below to disable the function.
1 Select the Start menu, Settings (except for Windows XP), and Control Panel. 2 Double-click the Infrared icon (the Wireless Link icon in Windows 2000 Professional/Windows XP). 3 Click the Sending image tab. 4 Clear the check box Send the image from the digital camera to your computer using the wireless link and click OK. icon in the task tray in the bottom right-hand 5 Click the HotSync corner of your computer screen and enable Infrared in the menu.
An error message saying there is insufficient memory appears while receiving data using the IR port
B To receive data using the IR port, the free space of your CLI handhelds memory must be more than twice the size of data to be received. If the memory space of your CLI handheld is insufficient, delete any unnecessary data after backing up data as needed. My CLI handheld activates a wrong feature when I tap a button or screen icon
B The digitizer is not correctly calibrated. Select Digitizer in the Preferences screen and adjust the digitizer. b For details, refer to Customizing your Sony CLI handheld (Preferences):

I cannot find the data I created when opening it in the application
B Check that you select All in the category list in the top right-hand corner of the screen. B Check that Show Records is selected in the Security screen. B Tap Show in To Do and check that you select the Show Only Due Items check box.
I cannot re-order memos in a list
B If you cannot manually arrange the order of the memos in the Memo Pad list screen, select Preferences from the Options menu. Then check that Manual is selected for the Sort by field. B The settings of the display order in the Palm Desktop for CLI software cannot be synchronized. Even if memos are arranged alphabetically in the Palm Desktop for CLI software, the notepad on your CLI handheld automatically re-orders the synchronized memos in accordance with the Memo Preferences setting.
An event created in the Date Book application cannot be listed in the week view
B In the Week view, you cannot select overlapping events that have the same start time. If you have two or more events with the same start time, select the Day view to view overlapping events.
I cannot transfer a vCard data created with the Address application on my CLI handheld
B The vCard data created with the Address application on your CLI handheld cannot be read by the Palm Desktop for CLI software because of its format ver3.X. When you want to transfer Address data to the Palm Desktop for CLI software on your computer, perform a HotSync operation (the vCard data created with the Palm Desktop for CLI software can be read by the Address application on your CLI handheld). When you transfer vCard data to a device other than a CLI handheld, the data may not be displayed properly on the device if the data version is not supported.
B Tap General in the Preferences screen and check that Beam Receive is set to ON. B Make sure you point the IR port of your CLI handheld directly at the IR port of the target device. B The distance between the devices is not proper. Make sure the distance between your CLI handheld and the target device is 4 to 8 inches (approximately 10 to 20 centimeters). Best results of beaming distance may vary depending on compatibility between devices.
The error message is displayed for insufficient memory when I receive data by beaming
B To receive data using the IR port, the free space of your CLI handhelds memory must be more than twice the size of data to be received. If the memory space of your CLI handheld is insufficient, delete any unnecessary data after backing up data as needed. I cannot exchange data using the Bluetooth function
B If you have renamed a target Bluetooth compatible device registered on your CLI handheld, the device may be listed in the previous name when you detect target Bluetooth compatible devices. In this case, follow the procedure below.

1 Tap the Menu icon from the Bluetooth Preferences screen. 2 Tap Disable device name cache from the Options menu. 3 Detect target Bluetooth compatible devices.

I forgot my password and my CLI handheld is locked
B You must perform a hard reset on your CLI handheld. If you perform a hard reset, your CLI handheld will be restored to its initial state and data or installed applications will be deleted. b For details, refer to Basic operations of your Sony CLI handheld:
I forgot my password and my CLI handheld is not locked
B You can use the Security function to delete the password, but all private records will be deleted. To back up all the data including private records, perform a HotSync operation before you delete the password. Then restore your private records saved on your computer by following the procedure below.
1 Tap Password in the Security screen. The Password dialog box is displayed. In the dialog box, tap Lost Password to delete the password. The password and all private records are deleted. 2 Perform a HotSync operation to restore your private records.
I cannot copy/move data between a Memory Stick media and my CLI handheld
B Check that the write protect tab of the Memory Stick media is not set to LOCK. B The free space of your CLI handhelds memory is insufficient. To copy/move data from a Memory Stick media to your CLI handheld, the free space of your CLI handhelds memory must be at least equal to the size of the data. If the memory space of your CLI handheld is insufficient, delete any unnecessary data after backing up data as needed.
The message Please insert the Memory Stick media is displayed when a Memory Stick media is inserted into the Memory Stick slot
I forgot my password / I cannot use a Memory Stick media
B The Memory Stick media is not recognized correctly. Eject the Memory Stick media and try inserting it again.
I cannot start applications on a Memory Stick media
B The free space of your CLI handhelds memory is insufficient. To start an application on a Memory Stick media from the Application Launcher screen, the free space of your CLI handhelds memory must be at least equal to the size of the application. If the memory space of your CLI handheld is insufficient, delete any unnecessary data after backing up data as needed. B Specify the location where the application is to be installed as Memory Stick media and check that HotSync operation is performed properly. When it is installed properly, copy or move the application from the Memory Stick media to your CLI handheld using the CLIE Files application.
My CLI handheld cannot read data on a Memory Stick media
B When you use the installation tool in the Palm Desktop for CLI software to save data on a Memory Stick media, the data will be stored in the folder /PALM/Launcher. However, you cannot locate the folder with some applications on your CLI handheld. In this case, copy the data from the Memory Stick media to your CLI handheld using the CLIE Files application. b For details about reference folders of each application on a Memory Stick
media, refer to About files stored on Memory Stick media in the CLI Application Manual installed on your computer. For any third-party application, contact the developer of the software.
Use Memory Stick Import/Memory Stick Export application to install data from your computer to Memory Stick media.
My CLI handheld does not recognize a Memory Stick media or an error occurs
B Eject the Memory Stick media and try inserting it again. B If the terminal part of the Memory Stick media is dirty, your CLI handheld cannot read the data. Wipe the terminal with a soft cloth, such as a cotton pad. B You cannot use a Memory Stick media that is formatted in a device other than your CLI handheld. Please format it on your CLI handheld. B When the battery of your CLI handheld is running low, data on a Memory Stick media may not be displayed. Recharge the battery of your CLI handheld.
I cannot make a backup of certain data on my computer with a HotSync operation
B You cannot make a backup of the following applications or data using the HotSync operation. Applications or data installed from a Memory Stick media or beamed. Some applications and driver files added later, or some data in applications. For details on applications that cannot be backed up, refer to the manuals of each application. If you want to make a complete backup, use the Memory Stick Backup application. b For details, refer to Backing up your Sony CLI handheld data: Backing
I cannot play the music once I have reached the limit of playback
B You cannot play audio files that have date expired or reached the limit of playback, and ATRAC3plus format files.
MP3 files cannot be read or played
B Check that the MP3 files are copied in the folder PALM/Programs/ MSAUDIO on the Memory Stick media. B Check that the file format is supported by your CLI handheld. b For details on file formats supported by your CLI handheld, refer to Audio
B Audio files encoded in VBR (Variable Bit Rate) cannot be played on your CLI handheld. Check the information of the audio file in the About Track screen, and if the bit rate of the audio file is 0 kbps, the file is encoded in VBR. b For details on file formats supported by your CLI handheld, refer to Audio
The next track cannot be found
B If you enable shuffle mode and disable repeat mode when playing music, the next track cannot be found if the final track is being played. In this case, select REP ALL and then search for the next track.
The sound stops suddenly
B Check that the remaining battery supply is sufficient. B Wipe the terminal with a soft cloth, such as a cotton pad.
My CLI handheld does not respond to a remote control operation
B Set the HOLD switch on the remote control to off.
Connecting to the computer SonicStage 1.5 does not recognize my CLI handheld even when it is placed in the cradle
B Check that the cradle is properly connected to your computer. B To check in/out audio files, a MagicGate Memory Stick media is required. Make sure you are using a MagicGate Memory Stick media. B Start the NetFront application and tap the menu icon. Tap NetFront Settings in the Options menu and check the settings for image display. Images, Animations: Set the checkbox to on. B The files may not be compatible with the NetFront application. The file formats compatible with the NetFront application are GIF (including animation GIF), JPEG, PNG, and MNG. B The file size may be too large.
All or some website contents are not displayed
B You cannot view the website content that are not compatible with the NetFront application such as Macromedia Flash resources. B NetFront may not be able to display certain websites designed for your computers browser software. b For details, refer to NetFront in the CLI Application Manual installed on
your computer.
B The website page size may be too large. In addition, HTML tags or page construction may affect its availability.
Internet connection takes too much time to download the contents of websites
B Connecting to the Internet using another Internet service provider or access point may improve the access time. Connecting during off-peak hours may also improve download time.
I cannot access a certain website
B Check that you enter the correct URL. Make sure you differentiate - (hyphen) from _ (underscore), or 0 (number) from O (alphabet) correctly. B To enter (tilde) in the URL: display the numeric keyboard and tap ~. Note that the appearance of (tilde) on screen varies between the computer and your CLI handheld. B When you access the website using bookmarks, the URL saved as the bookmark may be changed. Try to find the updated URL by entering the URL of the upper directory. B While the NetFront application is running, tap the Menu icon, select NetFront Settings from the Options menu, and check the proxy settings. Contact your Internet service provider for information about proxy, address, and port settings. B The message Memory is insufficient is displayed. Re-start the NetFront application. If the problem cannot be solved by re-starting, perform a soft reset. B Download files or saved pages cannot be deleted. You cannot delete files using the NetFront application. Use the CLIE Files application to delete files.
I cannot use e-mail (CLIE Mail)

B Wait for a while and retry. B With some service providers, you may have to first receive a mail before you can start sending mails. Send a mail within three minutes after receiving a mail (A time limit to send mails may vary depending on your service provider.) B With some service providers, you may not be able to send mails due to security systems. B If you start CLIE Mail from CLIE Camera S while the battery power of your CLI handheld is insufficient, an error message is displayed and you may not be able to send mails. In this case, select Send Later and quit CLIE Camera S. Start CLIE Mail from the Application Launcher screen and send mails.
