Product overview

NEC Mobile Suite enables you to use your computer to update and synchronise your phone's Personal Information Manager facilities (contacts, schedule and ToDos) and also transfer files (images, melodies, contacts and MP3s) between your phone and your computer and/or delete files on your phone. This CD (containing the software and user guide) should be accompanied by a data cable that connects your mobile phone to your PC.

System requirements

The system requirements for a PC to run the NEC Mobile Suite are as follows: Operating System: Windows 2000 (SP4) Windows XP Home (SP1 & SP2*) Windows XP Professional (SP1 & SP2*) l CPU Clock Speed: >350 MHz (1 GHz or higher recommended) l Memory: 32Mbyte RAM (256Mbyte or more recommended) l Disk Space: 10 Mbytes l Monitor: 800 x 600 or better resolution, 256 colours l Port type: USB l PDF Reader: AdobeTM AcrobatTM Reader 4 or above (Downloadable from www.adobe.com)
* For Windows XP SP2, the firewall minimum configuration must allow RAS to access the Internet.

Before you can install or use the NEC Mobile Suite, you must first have installed the USB drivers.

Connection information

To connect your phone to your PC, proceed as follows: Connect the USB lead's Phone Connector to the Handset Connect the USB Connector to a USB connector on your computer Follow the on-screen instructions as described in Installation (see page 4)
Carry out the following before you start the installation process:
Read the Introduction section Connect your phone to your PC as described in Connection information on page 3
The screens shown in this section were taken from a Windows XP Home system. Screens from other systems may vary in appearance.

Installation procedure

When the installation CD has auto-run or setup.exe has been double clicked, the Choose setup language dialog will be displayed (see right). Select the required language from the list (if necessary) and click OK.
The language selected here will be the language the application will use when running.
When you have selected the required setup language, the installation wizard starts and after some preparation screens, the Welcome screen will be displayed (see right). To continue with the installation, click Next>.

The installation procedure can be aborted by selecting Cancel.
The license screen will now be displayed (see right). Press the Page Down key to read the remaining part of the agreement or click Print to print out the license agreement. If you agree with the terms and conditions of the license, click I accept the terms of the license agreement and then Next. If you do not agree, click Cancel.
If you do not agree with the terms and conditions of the license, click No and the installation wizard will terminate.
When you have agreed to the terms and conditions of the license, the Customer Information dialog will be displayed (see right). Enter your name and (if appropriate) your company. Select the required access option (all users or just the user currently logged on). Click the Next> button.
If you do not select the All users option, only the user currently logged on will be able to use the Mobile Tools.
When you have entered your user information and access rights requirements, the Choose Destination Location dialog will be displayed (see right). To select the suggested directory, click the Next> button (recommended). To select an alternative location, click the Browse button, select the required location and then click the Next> button.
It is recommended that the suggested directory location is chosen.
When you have chosen the directory for the program files, the Select Program Folder dialog will be displayed (see right). To select the suggested program folder, click the Next> button (recommended). To create a new folder, key in the required folder name and then click the Next> button. To select an existing folder, click the required folder from the list so that it is highlighted and then click the Next> button.
It is recommended that the suggested program folder is chosen.
When you have decided whether or not to create a desktop shortcut, the Start Copying Files screen will be displayed (see right). This screen displays the settings you have selected. If you wish to change any of these settings, click the <Back button until the appropriate screen or dialog is displayed, make the necessary alterations and then click the Next> button until the Start Copying Files screen is redisplayed. With the required settings displayed, click the Next> button.

When you have accepted the settings, the program files will be copied and the Setup Status screen will be displayed, showing progress (see right).
When file copying is complete, the InstallShield Wizard Complete screen will be displayed (see right). If you wish a shortcut to be created on your desktop, click the Create a shortcut on desktop tick box. If you wish have NEC Mobile Suite run when you start your computer, click on the Run NEC Mobile Suite at Windows startup tick box. To end the installation process, click the Finish button.
When you have finished the installation, a prompt will be displayed (see right) giving you the choice of starting NEC Mobile Suite now or waiting until later. Click Yes to start the software or No to leave it until later. For information on how to use NEC Mobile Suite, see Using NEC Mobile Suite on page 7.

Uninstall procedure

To uninstall NEC Mobile Suite, proceed as follows: Select Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs. After a few seconds the installed program list will be displayed (see right). Select NEC Mobile Suite from the list and click Change/Remove. Follow the on-screen directions.

The NEC Mobile Suite enables you to manage your phone's multimedia files and Personal Information Manager facilities.
Phone selection (initial startup)
The first time you start NEC Mobile Suite you will have to select the phone model it will be communicating with as follows: Either double click the NEC Mobile Suite shortcut on your computer or select Start > Programs > NEC Mobile Suite. The Phone Selection dialog will be displayed (see right). Select your phone model from the list and click OK or select Auto detect.
If you decided to start NEC Mobile Suite as soon as the installation was complete, the phone selection screen (see left) will be displayed automatically.
When the phone is being auto detected, one of the Comms Service icons shown right will appear in the computer's systray (at the bottom right of its screen).

By right clicking on the Comms Service icon in the computer's Systray, the Comms service menu will be displayed. See page 25 for details of the options provided.

When you have selected your phone model or your phone has been detected, the program's main screen will be displayed (see right). Click on either the Multimedia Resource Manager, Personal Information Manager or Backup/Restore icon to start the required program. For details on using the Multimedia Resource Manager, see Using Multimedia Resource Manager on page 8. For details on using the Personal Information Manager, see Using Personal Information Manager on page 14. For details on using Backup/Restore, see Using Backup/Restore on page 24.
When NEC Mobile Suite is restarted, the last program used will be displayed in the work area.

Starting the software

To start NEC Mobile Suite, proceed as follows: Either double click the NEC Mobile Suite shortcut on your computer or select Start > Programs > NEC Mobile Suite. The NEC Mobile Suite main screen will now be displayed (see right). To change the manager program in use, click on the required icon (Multimedia Resource Manager is shown right).
Using Multimedia Resource Manager
The Multimedia Resource Manager software (shown right) allows you to transfer (copy) multimedia files (image, melody, movie and MP3 files) between your computer and mobile Drop Down Menus File Type Icons phone. It also enables you to create folders and delete multimedia files and folders on your mobile phone (but not on your computer).

Screen layout

The Multimedia Resource Manager's screen is divided into two file display areas (one for computer folders and files and one for the folders and files on your mobile phone), an image preview area (to display highlighted images), a graphic depicting the phone's remaining free memory, command buttons and drop down menu buttons.

What the software does
The basic concept is to highlight a file or files to be transferred (copied) in the source file area and click on the Move up or Move down button as appropriate so the file is displayed in the destination area. The file is not actually transferred until the Transfer command button is clicked. Files or folders on your phone can also be deleted.

Files can be transferred in both directions, transferring files to your phone first then the files to the computer.

File transfer

To transfer multimedia files between a computer and your mobile phone, proceed as follows: Ensure your mobile phone is turned on and connected to the computer (see Connection information on page 3). Start the NEC Mobile Suite software and select the Multimedia Resource Manager. Select the Image, Melody or Movies file type icon as required. Click the Get List command button. The prompt shown right will be displayed. Make sure your phone is set to the same language as NEC Mobile Suite and click Yes. The software will now detect your phone and download any relevant folders and files.

The procedure for transferring Image, Music or Movie files is the same for each file type. If you wish to display previews of your images, click the Get list with image preview option before you click Get List.
The folders and files downloaded from your phone will be displayed in the phone file list (see right). Use the respective file display area navigation controls (PC or phone) to locate the files to be transferred. Click on the file or files to be transferred (using the shift or ctrl keys for multiple file selection as normal). Selected files will be highlighted (a selected image file will be displayed in the image preview screen). Navigate to the destination folder in the other file display area. Click on Move up or Move down as appropriate. The files will now be displayed (in red) in the destination folder. Repeat the above procedure for files in other folders or for transfer in the opposite direction. Click the Transfer command button. The file transfer will take place.
When the software is started, the last used directory (folder) will be displayed. On initial start up the My Documents directory will be displayed. This is the same for both the PC and Phone files areas.
Instead of using the Move up or Move down buttons you can use your mouse to drag the files to the required area (PC or Phone). Files can be transferred in both directions. Files will be transferred to your phone first then to the computer.

Create a folder

You can use Multimedia Resource Manager to create a new folder on your phone (but not on the computer) as follows: Ensure your mobile phone is turned on and connected to the computer (see Connection information on page 3). Start the NEC Mobile Suite software and select the Multimedia Resource Manager. Click the Get List command button. The prompt shown right will be displayed. Make sure your phone is set to the same language as NEC Mobile Suite and click Yes. The software will now detect your phone and download any relevant folders and files. Navigate in the Phone file display area to where you wish to create the folder and click New Folder or rght click and select New Folder from the pop-up menu. A folder icon will be displayed with the title of New Folder. Key in an appropriate name and press Return. Click the Transfer command button to create the folder.
If you wish to display previews of your images, click the Get list with image preview option before you click Get List.
The user can change a new folder's name at any time (before clicking the Transfer button) by clicking on the folder itself or pressing F2. After the folder is transferred to the Phone its name can no longer be changed using the NEC Mobile Suite.
Deleting a file or folder
You can delete files or folders on your phone (but not on the computer) as follows: Ensure your mobile phone is turned on and connected to the computer (see Connection information on page 3). Start the NEC Mobile Suite software and select the Multimedia Resource Manager. Click the Get List command button. The prompt shown right will be displayed. Make sure your phone is set to the same language as NEC Mobile Suite and click Yes. The software will now detect your phone and download any relevant folders and files. Navigate in the Phone file display area containing the folder or files to be deleted and select them. Click the Delete button or right click and select Delete from the pop-up menu. Click the Transfer command button. The selected folder or files will be deleted.

Renaming files

When a file or folder is marked for transfer it is displayed in red. At this point you can rename it as follows: Either click on the marked file or folder name, or press F2. Key in the required name and press the Return key. The renamed file or folder will be transferred when the Transfer button is selected.

Marked files

When you try to mark a file for transfer one of the following conditions may occur:

Size of file too big

If the size of a particular file exceeds the allowed size for a specific file type the prompt shown right will be displayed. The file will be highlighted as shown but will not be marked for transfer.

Long file name

If a file's name exceeds the number of characters allowed, the name will be truncated to the appropriate length and it will be marked for transfer.
Digital right management (DRM) files
DRM files are protected by copyright and cannot be transferred (either to your Phone or PC). When the user tries to mark a DRM file for transfer a warning message will appear (see right) and the file will not be marked.

Corrupted files

If a file is corrupted a warning message will be displayed (see right) and the file will not be marked (a file can get corrupted in various ways, for instance when downloading it from a site or when is affected by a virus).

File name already exists

When a file is marked for transfer and its name already exists (both on the PC and the Phone) the file name will be changed automatically and marked. For example, a file name of 2d48a84A.jpg will be changed to 2d48a84A[1].jpg

File menu

The File menu (see right) consists of the following options:

New Folder

Performs the same function as the New Folder button.

Delete

Performs the same function as the on-screen Delete button or the Delete key on your computer's keyboard.
Performs the same function as the Move up button.
Performs the same function as the Move down button.

Get Resource List

Performs the same function as the Get List button.

Transfer

Performs the same function as the Transfer button.
Closes Multimedia Resource Manager.

View menu

The View menu (see right) consists of the following options:

Only one of these options can be selected at any one time and the perform the same function as selecting the file type icons.

Refresh

Reloads the contents of the current PC area directory.
Using Personal Information Manager
The Personal Information Manager works in one of five modes, enabling you to update and synchronise your phone's contact information (shown right), schedule and ToDo list.

Mode Selector

Although the screen layout for each mode is different, the mode selector icons and file drop down menu remain common between them. To change between modes, click the relevant mode selector icon.
Although the information in each mode is different, the basic concept is to download the relevant data from your phone to the computer then edit or add information to it and subsequently upload the altered data back to your phone.

Contacts mode

You can use the Contacts mode of the Personal Information Manager as follows: Ensure your mobile phone is turned on and connected to the computer (see Connection information on page 3). Start the NEC Mobile Suite software and select the Personal Information Manager. Select the Contacts mode (if necessary). If you wish to make any changes to the phone's group resources (melody, picture or LED colour), select Download or File>Download from Phone from the drop down menu. The phone's contact data will be loaded on to the PC. Make any changes to existing contacts or group information or select New to add a contact. When you have made all the required changes and/or additions, select Upload or File>Upload to Phone from the drop down menu to transfer the data.

Group control functions

The following functions are available within the Group details area:

All groups

When the All groups option is selected, all contacts available will be displayed in the Contact names area.

No groups

When the No groups option is selected, only contacts not associated with any group will be displayed in the Contact names area.

Individual group

When an individual group is selected, the contacts within that group will be displayed in the Contact names area.

Melody

If you have downloaded your phone's resource list (File>Download from Phone) this list will contain the melodies you can associate with the currently selected group. The melody displayed in this field will be played each time a call is received by a particular contact or contact belonging to a group that has this melody defined.

Picture

If you have downloaded your phone's resource list (File>Download from Phone) this list will contain the pictures you can associate with the currently selected group. The picture displayed in this field will be shown each time a call is received by a particular contact or contact belonging to a group that has this picture defined.
If you have downloaded your phone's resource list (File>Download from Phone) this list will contain the LED colours you can associate with the currently selected group. The LED colour displayed in this field will be the one shown each time a call is received by a particular contact or contact belonging to a group that has this LED colour defined.

Reset groups

Selecting this option will clear the Melody, Picture and LED fields for all groups.

Renaming a group

To rename a group, double click on the current group name and then key in the required new name.
Contacts control functions

Apply/Cancel

If you make any changes to the contact details, click Apply to save them or Cancel to abort them.

New/Delete/Delete all

To create a new contact, click New. To delete the currently selected contact, click Delete. To delete all contacts from the selected group, click Delete all.

Change group

You can change the group of the selected contact(s) by dragging and dropping them to the required group in the group list.

Change field

Multiple fields can be updated on multiple contacts at the same time. With two or more contacts selected, you can make changes to the Group, Melody, Picture and LED fields. All other fields are disabled.
No changes are sent to the phone until File>Upload to Phone is selected.

The next time you turn on your phone after the phonebook data has been uploaded to it, there may be a time delay before the standby screen is displayed. The time delay depends on language settings and the amount of data uploaded.

Schedule mode

You can use the Schedule mode of the Personal Information Manager as follows: Ensure your mobile phone is turned on and connected to the computer (see Connection information on page 3). Start the NEC Mobile Suite software and select the Personal Information Manager. Select the Schedule mode (if necessary). Select Download or File>Download from Phone from the drop down menu. The phone's schedule data will be loaded on to the PC. Select an existing schedule in the Viewer and use the Schedule Settings control to update it. Click Apply to save the changes or Cancel to abort the changes. To create a new schedule, click New and then use the Schedule Settings to set it up. Click Apply to save the changes or Cancel to abort the changes. When you have made all the required changes and/or additions, select Upload or File>Upload to Phone from the drop down menu to transfer the data.

The red outline around a date on the calendar indicates the current date whilst the blue fill indicates the current schedule date. The Description field contains a user defined title for the schedule (it will be displayed on your phone's screen at the scheduled time). The Date, Time and Recurrence fields are self-explanatory. The Reminder melody box must be ticked before a melody can be assigned to a schedule. If the Private box is ticked, a security code must be entered on your phone before you can access the scheduled event.
By clicking on the column titles in the Viewer, the column details alternate between ascending or descending order.

Show daily/Show all

Show daily displays all events of the selected date in the Schedule Viewer whilst Show all displays all existing events.

New/Delete

To create a new schedule, click New. To delete the currently selected schedules, click Delete.

Start the NEC Mobile Suite software and select the Personal Information Manager. Select the ToDo mode (if necessary). Select Download or File>Download from Phone from the drop down menu. Click Apply to save the changes or Cancel to abort the changes. To create a new ToDo, click New and then use the ToDo Settings to set it up. When you have made all the required changes and/or additions, select Upload or File>Upload to Phone from the drop down menu to transfer the data.

The Description field contains a description of the task. The Start date and Due date settings are self-explanatory. The task's Category can be set to Business, Personal or Other. The task's Priority can be set to High, Low or Normal. The Done tick box should be selected when the task is complete. If the Private box is ticked, a security code must be entered on your phone before you can access the task.
To create a new task, click New. To delete the currently selected task, click Delete.

Notepad

You can use the Notepad mode of the Personal Information Manager as follows: Ensure your mobile phone is turned on and connected to the computer (see Connection information on page 3). Start the NEC Mobile Suite software and select the Personal Information Manager. Select the Notepad mode (if necessary). Select Download or File>Download from Phone from the drop down menu. The phone's notepad data will be loaded on to the PC. Select an existing Notepad in the Viewer and update it in the Notepad Settings area. Click Apply to save the changes or Cancel to abort the changes. To create a new Notepad entry, click New and then use the Notepad Settings to set it up. Click Apply to save the changes or Cancel to abort the changes. When you have made all the required changes and/or additions, select Upload or File>Upload to Phone from the drop down menu to transfer the data.

The Description field contains a description of the note that will be displayed on your phone's screen when viewing the Notepad. The remaining text area will contain the note itself.
Use this control to create a new folder on your mobile phone.

You can use the Bookmark mode of the Personal Information Manager as follows: Ensure your mobile phone is turned on and connected to the computer (see Connection information on page 3). Start the NEC Mobile Suite software and select the Personal Information Manager. Select the Bookmark mode (if necessary). Select Download or File>Download from Phone from the drop down menu. The phone's Bookmark data will be loaded on to the PC. Select an existing Bookmark in the Viewer and update it in the Bookmark Settings area. Click Apply to save the changes or Cancel to abort the changes. To create a new Bookmark entry, click New and then use the Bookmark Settings to set it up. Click Apply to save the changes or Cancel to abort the changes. When you have made all the required changes and/or additions, select Upload or File>Upload to Phone from the drop down menu to transfer the data.

The Description field contains Bookmark's title. The lower text area will contain the URL itself.

View Menu

This menu (see right) allows you to select any of the PIM modes (Contacts, Schedule, ToDo, Notepad or Bookmark).
A maximum of 10 folders can be created, and in each one the maximum of 50 Bookmarks can be created. 50 Bookmarks can also be created in the "root" (where the two bookmarks are in the above sample screen).
The file drop down menu (see right) is common to all Personal Information Manager modes.
Erases all data from the application.
Opens a.pim file previous created by one of the three modes within Personal Information Manager.
Saves all data from the current mode to a.pim file.

Save as

Same as Save, only you can choose another name for the file.

Download from Phone

Transfers all data relevant to the current mode from your phone into Personal Information Manager.

Upload to Phone

Transfers all data relevant to the current mode from Personal Information Manager to your phone.

A CSV file is a standard format file used to enable data importation and exportation between different software applications.
Clears the three fields of the Group Default Settings for all the existing groups and resets the group names (to the default ones).
Closes Personal Information Manager.
Importing from a CSV file
Select File>Import>Import from CSV. The setup screen (shown right) will be displayed. Either key in the location and name of the CSV file to be imported, or click Browse to select the required file. Select the character that separates the fields. If the first line of the file to be imported is a list of the fields' names make sure the The file has a Header line (first one) check box is ticked. Click Next>. When you have selected a file, its separator character and set up the field name definition, the field mapping screen will be displayed (see right). This screen enables you to define which of the CSV files fields you are importing correspond to your phone's PIM fields (a procedure known as mapping). If you wish to place the first field in the CSV Values column against the first field in the PIM Fields column, and the second CSV Value against the second PIM Field and so on, click Default Mapping. If you wish to map the CSV Values manually, select a field in the CSV values column in the From table. If you wish the field to be placed in the next available space in the Mapped From column in the To table just click >>. If you wish to place the field against a specific PIM Field in the To table, select the required PIM Field before you click >>. When you have mapped the CSV fields correctly, click Next>. When the CSV fields have been mapped, the importing progress screen (shown right) will be displayed. This screen has a status bar to show overall progress and also indicates which contact record is being imported. If a problem is detected whilst importing a contact record, a warning will be displayed. The problems that will cause such a warning are an empty field or a field with incorrect contents (i.e. a numeric field that contains text). When a warning is displayed, you must either select Force which means the field will not be imported or Skip which means the complete contact record is not imported. When either Force or Skip have been selected the import will resume. If the check box Apply to all the warnings of the type is ticked, all warnings of the same type (empty fields or incorrect ones) will be handled in the same way from then on. For example, if the situation in the above screen occurs and the user ticks the check box and then clicks the Force button, all <pinyin> fields will be ignored.

If the The file has a Header line (first one) check box is not ticked, the first line will be interpreted as a contact's record.
To change the order of the PIM Fields in the To table, select the required field and press the up or down arrows to the right of the table to move the selected field. Individual fields can be removed from the Mapped From column by selecting them and clicking <<. To remove all fields from the Mapped From column, click Erase Mapping.
When importing is complete, a log of the process will be displayed (see right). The log screen has a detailed list of the warnings and at the end shows the number of records imported, skipped and the number of warnings. Click Finish to exit.

Exporting a CSV file

Select File>Export>Export to CSV. The setup screen (shown right) will be displayed. Either key in the location and name of the CSV file to be exported, or click Browse to select the required file path. Select the character that will separate the fields. If you wish the first line of the file to be exported to contain the fields' names make sure the The file has a Header line (first one) check box is ticked. Click Next>. When you have selected a file name and location, the file's separator character and set up the field name definition, the final status screen will be displayed (see right). This screen shows the complete file path, the number of records (contacts) exported and if the process was concluded successfully. Click Finish to exit.

Using Backup/Restore

The Backup/Restore facility (shown right) provides a way to save all the data from your phone into a file on a PC. This data can be restored (inserted back into the phone) at any time. As it can be seen Contacts, Schedule, ToDo, Melodies, Pictures, Movies, SMS/EMS and i-mode, are the available data for this operation.

Backup

Select which kind of data you wish to back up by ticking the boxes on the left side of the screen. The Select All option will tick all boxes. Click Backup (or select File>Backup) and a Save As screen will be displayed. Select the name and location of the backup file and click Save to initiate the backup process. The right side of the Backup/Restore screen monitors progress. When the backup is complete, all the ticked boxes on the Backup side will be also ticked in the Restore side.

Restore

Click Open (or select File>Open), and select the required backup file. After confirming the file, all the boxes corresponding to the backed up data will be ticked. Untick items if they are not to be restored and click Restore (or select File>Restore). The right side of the Backup/Restore screen monitors progress.

Comms Service menu

The Comms Service menu (shown right) contains the following information and options:

XXXX connected on COMx

This indicates which phone model (XXXX) has been detected and to which port (COMx) it is connected. If no phone is connected the text "No phone connected" will be displayed.
Personal Information Manager
This option starts Personal Information Manager.
Multimedia Resource Manager
This option starts Multimedia Resource Manager.
Personal Information Manager, Multimedia Resource Manager and Backup/Restore can all be running at the same time.

Backup/Restore

This option starts Backup/Restore.

Phone selection

This option allows you to select the required phone model.

Configure COM port

This option allows you to manually set the COM port used to communicate with your phone. By default all existing COM ports are listed. When the user connects a phone using a USB port, this last is added to the list. The list is only updated when the user accesses it.
This option enables you to verify the software version of each NEC Mobile Suite module, the Comms Service and the NEC Mobile Suite itself.
This option closes the Comms Service, along with the NEC Mobile Suite if it is running.
