Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7K 6 MP Digital Camera (Black)6 MB MultiMediaCard, SD Memory Card, F/2.8-3.3
The FZ7 features a LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT Lens with a remarkable 12x optical zoom, equivalent to a 35 to 430mm lens on a 35mm film camera. A film camera with an optical zoom this powerful would be so big and heavy, you couldn't handle it with one hand. The FZ7, on the other hand, is small, lightweight and easy to handle. It also has Panasonic's Extended Optical Zoom. While causing minimal deterioration by using the center part of the high-resolution CCD, this function magnifies the image... If you compensate the exposure to minus, referring to the histogram and then take a picture again, it may result in a better quality picture. No highlight display
With highlight display
Histogram A histogram is a graph that displays brightness along the horizontal axis (black to white) and the number of pixels at each brightness level on the vertical axis. It allows you to easily check a pictures exposure. It is very useful if manual adjustments of the lens aperture and shutter speed are available, especially in those situations where automatic exposure may be difficult due to uneven lighting. Using the histogram feature allows you to get the maximum performance from your camera. A When the values are concentrated on the left, the picture is under exposed. B When the values are distributed evenly, the exposure is proper and the brightness is well-balanced. C When the values are concentrated on the right, the picture is over exposed. Example of histogram
When the recorded picture and the histogram do not match each other under the following conditions, the histogram is displayed in orange. When the flash is activated When the flash is closed 1 When the brightness of the screen is not correctly displayed in dark places 2 When the exposure is not adequately adjusted The histogram is an approximation in recording mode. The histogram of a picture may not match in recording mode and playback mode. The histogram displayed in this camera does not match histograms displayed by picture editing software used in PCs etc. Check for any white saturated areas with the highlight display when the auto review or review function is activated. (P39) The histogram does not appear in simple mode [ ] or motion picture mode [ ] and during multi playback and playback zoom.

Refer to P55 for the Aperture-priority AE, Shutter-priority AE or Manual exposure mode. There may be differences in the above shutter speeds in scene mode. [NIGHT SCENERY] (P61): 8 to 1/2000th [FIREWORKS] (P63): 1/4th, 2 seconds
[STARRY SKY] (P63): 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds Adjusting flash output Adjust the flash output when the subject is small or reflection ratio is extremely high or low.
1 Press 3 ( ) several times until [FLASH] appears and then press 2/1 to set the flash output.
Select [0] to return to the original flash output.
2 Press [MENU/SET] to finish.
You can adjust from [j2 EV] to [i2 EV] in steps of [1/3 EV]. When the flash output is adjusted, the flash output value appears on the upper left of the screen. The flash output setting is memorized even if the camera is turned off. In motion picture mode [ ], simple mode [ ] and [SCENERY] (P60), [NIGHT SCENERY] (P61), [FIREWORKS] (P63) or [STARRY SKY] (P63) in scene mode, you cannot adjust the flash output.
Do not look directly at the flash at close range when it is activated. Do not bring the flash too close to objects or close the flash while it is activated. The objects may be discolored by its heat or lighting. Do not cover the photo flash with your fingers or other objects.
If you press the shutter button halfway when the flash is activated, the flash icon turns red. When the jitter alert appears, we recommend using a tripod. When you take a picture beyond the available flash range, the exposure may not be adjusted properly and the picture may become bright or dark. When the flash is being charged, the flash icon blinks red, and you cannot take a picture even when you press the shutter button fully. When taking a picture with the flash, the white balance is automatically adjusted [except for [ ] (Daylight), [ ] (Flash)]. However, the white balance may not be properly adjusted if the flash level is insufficient. (P75) When the shutter speed is fast, the flash effect may not be sufficient. If you repeat taking a picture, it may not actually be taken even if the flash is activated. Take a picture after the access indication disappears. When taking a picture with the flash, we recommend removing the lens hood. In some cases it may not allow the scene to be illuminated properly. Do not close the flash soon after the flash is activated prior to taking pictures due to AUTO/Red-eye reduction etc. It causes a malfunction. The red-eye reduction effect differs between people. Also, if the subject was far away from the camera or was not looking at the first flash, the effect may not be evident. When using a conversion lens, the built-in flash setting is fixed to Forced OFF [ ]. When you set burst mode or auto bracket, only 1 picture is recorded for every flash activated.
Compensate the exposure towards negative.
Taking Pictures using Auto Bracket
In this mode, 3 pictures are automatically recorded in the selected exposure compensation range each time the shutter button is pressed. You can select the picture with the desired exposure from the 3 pictures with different exposures.
1 Press 3 [ ] several times until [AUTO BRACKET] appears, set the compensation range of the exposure with 2/1.
AUTO BRACKET
You can select [OFF] (0), [d1/3 EV], [d2/3 EV] or [d1 EV]. When you do not use auto bracket, select [OFF] (0).
The auto bracket setting is canceled if the camera is turned off. When setting auto bracket and burst mode simultaneously, auto bracket will be performed. When auto bracket is set, the auto review function is activated regardless of the auto review setting. (The picture is not enlarged.) You cannot set the auto review function in the [SETUP] menu. When auto bracket is activated, [AUDIO REC.] cannot be used. The exposure may not be compensated with auto bracket depending on the brightness of the subject. When setting the quality to [TIFF], you cannot take pictures with the auto bracket. In shutter-priority AE and manual exposure, if the shutter speed is set to more than 1 second auto bracket is disabled. When the flash is activated or [STARRY SKY] in scene mode is selected, you can take only 1 picture. If the number of recordable pictures is 2 or less, you cannot take pictures by setting auto bracket.
You can also press the shutter button halfway to finish.
When setting auto bracket, the auto bracket icon [ ] appears on the lower left of the screen. When taking pictures using auto bracket after setting the exposure compensation range, the pictures taken are based on the selected exposure compensation range. When the exposure is compensated, the exposure compensation value appears on the lower left of the screen.

Depending on the TV model, pictures may not be displayed on the full screen. Motion pictures cannot be played back. To play back motion pictures, connect the camera to the TV with the AV cable (supplied). You may not be able to play back MultiMediaCards.
Using the MC Protector/ND Filter
The MC protector (DMW-LMC52; optional) is a transparent filter which affects neither the colors nor the amount of light, so it can always be used to protect the cameras lens. The ND filter (DMW-LND52; optional) reduces the amount of light to approximately 1/8th (equal to adjusting the aperture value 3 increments) without affecting the color balance.
1 Attach the hood adaptor.
Do not hold the MC protector/ND filter too tightly. When taking pictures with the flash using the MC protector or ND filter, vignetting effect may occur. If the MC protector/ND filter are dropped, they may be destroyed. Be careful not to drop them when attaching them to the camera. You can attach the lens hood when the MC Protector and ND Filter are attached. You cannot attach a conversion lens or the close-up lens to the hood adaptor. The lens adaptor (DMW-LA2; optional) is necessary to attach a conversion lens or close-up lens. MCuMulti-coated NDuNeutral Density
2 Attach the MC protector 1 or the ND filter 2.
You cannot attach the MC protector and the ND filter at the same time. If the MC protector/ND filter are tightened too much, you may not be able to remove them. Do not tighten them too much.

Full description
The FZ7 features a LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT Lens with a remarkable 12x optical zoom, equivalent to a 35 to 430mm lens on a 35mm film camera. A film camera with an optical zoom this powerful would be so big and heavy, you couldn't handle it with one hand. The FZ7, on the other hand, is small, lightweight and easy to handle. It also has Panasonic's Extended Optical Zoom. While causing minimal deterioration by using the center part of the high-resolution CCD, this function magnifies the image to give you total zoom power of 17.5x - roughly equivalent to a huge 1680mm lens on a 35mm camera. Jitter from shaky hands is one of the main reasons why cameras produce blurry images. Lumix cameras help solve the problem of unsteady hands with advanced MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer technology. The DMC-FZ7 has a built-in gyrosensor that detects any hand movement and relays a signal to a tiny microcomputer inside the camera, which instantly calculates the compensation needed. A linear motor then shifts the Optical Image Stabilizer lens as necessary to guide incoming light from the image straight to the CCD. You won't even notice it working-all you'll see are the outstanding results! High-Sensitivity Mode helps suppress motion blur by automatically setting the ISO sensitivity to 1600, which increases the shutter speed. It also lets you take clearer, sharper shots in dim lighting without using a flash. The FZ7 features a large, 2.5" diagonal LCD and the Power LCD function. Simply touch the Power LCD button and the display becomes about 40% brighter for easier viewing on sunny days. The FZ7 also has the world's first developed High-Angle LCD feature, which makes it easier to check the LCD when you're holding the camera high to shoot over a crowd. The large LCD lets you check the focus, frame the shot, and use functions like 25-thumbnail display and Calendar View in comfort, with no eye strain. Also, Panasonic aligned the electronic viewfinder and LCD along the same line of sight to minimize differences in the images you see when framing shots. You can snap off up to 14 consecutive shots at a swift 3 frames per second in Standard mode. The FZ7 also has Unlimited Consecutive Shooting, so you can keep on shooting until the SD Memory Card is full. The joystick on the back of the camera gives you quick, easy and accurate manual focusing. You can also use the Manual Focus Assist function, which helps you set a perfect focus by magnifying the center of the LCD image and displaying a bar graph of the focal distance and depth of field. The joystick also makes it easy to manually adjust the exposure and focus. You can set the aperture, shutter speed and focus with your thumb while framing the shot on the LCD monitor. Press and hold down the joystick, and you can also instantly change four key settings - white balance, ISO sensitivity, image size, and image quality - while viewing the subject on the monitor. There's no need to switch to the menu screen.
