I originally got this scanner to run under Windows 98. It worked adequately, although I never could get a good scan on photos. (this is an actual correspondence with their tech support, please read the bottommost first) no comment ever heard of a company selling DRIVERS?

The Umax 3400 is a good solid scanner that is excellent value for money. Simple interface. easy to set up flimsy lid

1. Click on Start, Programs, Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0. 2. Click the Start from Scratch button from the welcome screen (far top right).
3. Click the Cancel button on the New popup window.
4. Click the File menu, Import, D-Link USB Video Capture Device. 5. Adjust the brightness, contrast, hue, and saturation if desired by using the slide bars on the right of the D-Link USB Video Capture Device window. 6. Click the Capture Still Image button (bottom left of the D-Link USB Video Capture Device window).

7. Click the File menu, then Save.
8. Provide the File name on a flashdrive or other folder for future use. 9. Repeat steps 4 through 8 to capture other images and save them to your folder 10. Close Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0.

3. Select the quality of scan you need, 100-150dpi is normally good enough for most color photos.
Drag the corner of the scanning box to encompass the entire or portion of the glass where you photos are located. Note, the PREVIEW option does not work so make sure the box is large enough to accommodate your total image.

Select the Folder Icon, then navigate to the location on hard or flashdrive to place scanned images. Do this on each scan operation. Select the image type, JPEG is recommended. DO NOT SELECT PREVIEW Option Select SCAN and wait for the scanner to respond and sweep the images.

After scanner sweeps, the image is stored in location specified earlier and you are ready fo another scan DO NOT try to use the Preview option, it will f and abort the entire process.

Astra 3400 / 3450

The New Umax Scanner in the Series Astra Umax Systems GmbH present two new scanners: the Astra 3400 and Astra 3450. These scanners set new standards in scanning speed. The Astra 3400 creates a prescan within 15 seconds. This is captured by the 14-bit A/D-converter that combines 42-bit colour depth (output) with a resolution of 600 x 1200 dpi. The Astra 3450 includes a transparency cover for scanning negatives and slides. The dimensions also have been reduced. With a slender size of 460 x 295 x 80 mm and weighing only 2,6 kg, it is at least 1 kg lighter and 2 cm smaller all around than its predecessors. Astra 3450 Another new feature is an additional Scanner button, which offers Power Saving. This is supplementary to the three conventional buttons: Scan, Copy and Custom. Bundled Software

The VistaScan driver 3.7 is fully TWAIN compatible with two interface modes. In the beginner mode the driver will automatically apply the most appropriate settings and execute the scan. For the more demanding user VistaScan offers the advanced mode. Here all settings can be set to ones own liking. Resolution, descreen options, filters (like sharpen or blur), multiple scan settings and several colour balance tools are adjustable. VistaScan includes two features, VistaAccess and VistaShuttle for significantly improved usability. VistaAccess is added to the toolbar, providing quick and easy access to scanning functions right from the desktop. VistaShuttle helps you to create greeting cards, add images to any email, making colourful wallpaper or screen saver. The Astra 3400/3450 features the exclusive Intelligent Imaging Process Engine (IIEP) which automatically optimizes images and text. This technology is activated through configuring the push buttons in Vista Access, and will allow ou to produce results at the push of a button. The Astra 3400/3450 are bundled with Adobe PhotoDeluxe Home Edition (full Version) 3.0 for PC and 2.0 for Mac and NewSoft Presto! PageManager (full version). Adobe PhotoDeluxe is an image editor with a wide range of functions for editing and manipulating pictures. Presto! PageManager is a powerful drag-and-drop software tool for printing, copying, emailing, faxing and OCR (optical character recognition). Also included is NewSoft Presto! PageType (full version, PC) for scanning in and filling out pre-printed forms. Caere OmniPage LE OCR is an optical character recognition application, scanning text documents with 99% accuracy into word processing applications as computer-editable text. With the UMAX copy utility (PC), the scanner, together with a printer can be used as a copier, with an look-alike interface to a normal photo-copier. The copy utility is designed for making multiple copies of an original.

By using the scan driver the crop function will adjust the scan frame automatically to the image. Kodak MagicMatch: Accurate Colour Scans MagicMatch, the Kodak Colour Management System, offers calibrated scanner profiles that meet the ICC standard. The colour is consistent from scanner to screen display and to printer. By choosing the auto adjustment, Kodak MagicMatch is activated and outputs perfect pictures with a standard setting. For scanning slides and transparent originals, the Astra 3450, including a transparency cover, is the right choice. The built-in fixed light source in the cover scans up to 4 x 5 transparencies or 4 slides at a time.
