Chapter 1

Thank you for purchasing an HP PhotoSmart 1215/1218 color printer! Your new printer prints everything from laser quality black and white text documents to color photos. Before you get started, be sure to set up your printersee the Quick Start poster included in the box. If you need more information about setting up your new printer, see Connecting and upgrading your printer on page 109. Use your new HP PhotoSmart 1215/1218 printer to: Print photos directly from a digital cameras memory card without using your computer.

On the output tray, move the slider (visible through the output tray) toward you (away from the inside of the printer) until it stops. This disengages the photo tray. Adjust the side and front paper guides to fit close to the edges of the paper, without bending the paper. This helps the paper feed straight into the printer.
To. Load paper in the photo tray Use the printers photo tray to print on 4 x 6 inch (102 x 152 mm) photo paper. When you use the photo tray, you can leave your regular paper in the paper tray.
Follow these steps. 1. 2. 3. On the output tray, move the slider (visible through the output tray) toward you (away from the inside of the printer) until it stops. This disengages the photo tray. Lift the output tray. Load paper in the photo tray with the print side down. If you are using tabbed paper, feed or place the tabbed paper into the printer so the tab feeds in last. Lower the output tray to its original position. On the output tray, move the slider away from you (toward the inside of the printer) until it stops against the edge of the paper. This engages the photo tray. When you are finished using the photo tray, disengage it so the printer will use the paper in the paper tray.
Load a single envelope Use the printers single-envelope slot to print one envelope at a time.
Load the envelope into the single-envelope slot with the address side down and the flap on the left. Slide the envelope in until it stops.
See the picture on the printer.
To. Load a stack of envelopes You can print multiple envelopes using the paper tray.
Follow these steps. 1. 2. Pull out the front paper guide on the paper tray and slide the side paper guide as far to the left as it will go. Place a stack of envelopes into the paper tray. Load the envelopes against the right side of the paper tray. Load the envelopes address side down with the flaps on the left. Check that the envelopes are not batched together with one flap surrounding several envelopes. Be careful not to use more than 1520 envelopes. The stack should fit below the front paper guide. Use one kind and size of envelope at a time. Do not mix envelope types or sizes in the paper tray.
Adjust the side and front paper guides to fit close to the edges of the envelopes, without bending them. This helps the envelopes feed into the printer correctly.

Printing an index page
An index page, which may be several pages long, shows thumbnail views of all the photos stored on the memory card. The file name, date and index number appear under each thumbnail. Use the index number to select photos to print. This number may be different from the number associated with the photo on your digital camera. If you add photos to, or delete photos from, your memory card, you will need to reprint the index page to see the new index numbers. To. Print an index page
Date Index number File name Example of an index page
Follow these steps. 1. 2. Insert the memory card into the printer. See Inserting a memory card on page 24 if you need more information. Check that the printers LCD indicates: If this is not the setting shown on the LCD, press Cancel/No to get to this setting. 3. Press Print.

Using Your Printer on a Network
Before you set up your printer, check that your computer is fully set up, operational, and meets the minimum system requirements listed in System Requirements in your HP PhotoSmart 1215/1218 Printer Users Guide. Your HP PhotoSmart 1215/1218 printer can be shared over a network in three different ways:
Locally Shared: Share your printer from a network-connected computer by enabling printer sharing on a host computer and
connecting your printer to the parallel port of the host computer. See Locally Shared Printer Connection on page 2 for details.
Peer-to-Peer: Connect your printer to a network via the parallel port of an HP JetDirect 70X, 170X, or 300X External Printer Server. See Peer-to-Peer Connection on page 14 and consult your print server documentation for help setting up the print server.
Print Server Network Connection: Connect your printer to a network via the parallel port of an HP JetDirect External Print Server
and share the printer from a Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or NetWare 3.12, 4.11, or 5.0 server on your network. Clients print through a Windows NT or NetWare server. See Client Server Network Connection on page 19 for details.
Clients on a network do not have access to the CompactFlash or SmartMedia card slots. Clients only have the ability to print. Host computers in a locally shared configuration will have access to the card slots, only if software is loaded using the full installation method.
Locally Shared Printer Connection
In the locally shared configuration, the printer is connected directly to the parallel or USB port of a selected computer that functions as a host to other computers on the network. To locally share your printer, the printer software must be installed on the host computer and on each client computer.
USB is only supported on Windows 98, Windows Me, and Windows 2000.
Operating Systems for a Locally Shared Connection
Installation instructions for the supported operating systems can be found on the following pages: Operating Systems Windows 95, 98, Me Windows NT 4.0 Windows 2000 Host Page 4 Page 7 Page 9 Client Page 11 Page 12 Page 13
Setting Up a Locally Shared Printer
1. Set up the printer. Follow the instructions on the Quick Start poster (included in the box).
Make sure you do not have any peripheral devices, such as scanners, switch boxes, backup units, etc. installed between the printer and the computer. The printer must be connected directly to the host computer.
Install the printer software on the host computer, and share your printer on the network. See the table on page 2 to find instructions for your operating system. Install the printer software on each of the client computers. See the table on page 2 to find instructions for your operating system.

Setting Up Windows 95, 98, and Me Hosts
Installing the Printer Software on a Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me Host
On host installations, two methods may be used: Full installation includes card reader accessibility (recommended for all USB installations). Minimal installation allows print-only capability.

Full Installation

1. 2. Close or disable any virus protection programs or other software programs that are open and running on the computer, except the HP PhotoSmart Software Installer and Windows Explorer. Using the installation instructions included in the box, install the software following the instructions for your operating system.

Minimal Installation

If your computer displays the Found New Hardware Wizard, begin at step 5.

1. 2. 3. 4.

Technical specifications

Full description

HP PhotoSmart photo printer is designed to bring low-cost, photographic-quality image printing to the home environment. The HP PhotoSmart photo printer enables importing personal photographs for manipulation and inclusion in various forms of documents and can output them economically without sacrificing the quality of the original image. The most frequent uses of the HP PhotoSmart photo printer include photo enlargement, cropping, red-eye elimination, scratch removal, replication of snapshots, and the creation of greeting cards and other novelties. These uses require the support of a wide variety of media sizes. These media sizes include letter (8.5 x 11 inches), A4 (210 x 297 millimeters [mm]), and 4 x 6 inches, as well as a wide variety of media types, including photo weight papers (photographic glossy or photographic matte), special project papers, transparency, and a calendar kit. The HP PhotoSmart photo printer writing system uses two tri-chamber ink cartridges. The concentrations of the standard cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (C, M, Y, and K) inks have been reduced, and two additional chambers of very light cyan and magenta enable the HP PhotoSmart photo printer to deliver true spot colors in highlighted areas that typically have to be dithered. The cartridges are fired in a multipass print mode, allowing any combination of the six different inks to be delivered at varying intensities. Combinations of up to eight drops per pixel are used, giving the HP PhotoSmart photo printer a very large color gamut. Print times range from four to eight minutes per page for 8 x 10-inch images, one to two minutes per page for 4 x 6-inch images, and one to two pages per minute for letter-size text documents. Now Hewlett-Packard is proud to present the next generation of the PhotoSmart series color printers - model 1215. These printers feature color layering technology with PhotoRet III that allows you to place 2400 microdots at an inch, which gives you a total print quality and outstanding photo realistic images. The model supports Direct Connect Printing and easy to use "beam and print" wireless printing from cameras, PDAs, laptops, cell phones, etc. You can even use CompactFlash, Type I & II and SmartMedia memory cards. Besides, the printer is able to provide you with the speed that meets your everyday versatile printing needs with outstanding print quality.
