072 VENUE

CLUB BLACK

herning, DENMARK
EUROPE/MIDDLE EAST/AFRICA
Like the proverbial stone seeking its equally proverbial pair of birds, I ew into rhus at the end of September with an agenda: to visit the home turf of Martin Professional and TC Group. Both companies are headquartered within the orbit of Denmarks second largest city, and operate in the same markets, whilst avoiding the inconvenience of being in direct competition with each other, making my murderous ambition a little less covert. The lucidity of their relationship is demonstrated with a visit to Martin Professionals impressive headquarters, where within a substantial showroom, an array of Martin xtures (own on Euro Truss) visually impact what amounts to a mini-theatre, and TC Groups products Tannoy and Lab.gruppen handle the audio aspects. When people are coming in here, theyre getting a total impression. Its not just light; its smoke and sound and video. You have to stimulate all the senses, reveals Martins Project Manager Anders Birch. It made good sense to us to work together with TC Electronics, he continues. I think Martin sees themselves as one of the top players in the market, and TC is one of the top players in their market, and of course since were [geographically] pretty close, and we sometimes have the same customers, it made sense. Tannoy has a very nice sound; it is smooth and not harsh like some other PA speakers, so it made good sense for us. Lab.gruppen too, its both. We need to have known brands. Birch goes on to explain that the objective of the showroom is to

inspire rather than direct. Its an opportunity for people to see the possibilities, mentally work them into the space they are designing, and push the process in exciting directions, which leads us nicely into Club Blacks story. It is another Anders, Anders Mrk who spent the best part of a year conveying his vision for Club Black to Martin Professional. Interestingly, Martin handles several projects each year in Denmark where they offer a full integration service; not just lighting design. It is this part of the business that has further strengthened the professional relationship between the two rhus companies. Particularly central to this are Anders Birch and TC Groups Jonas Olsen, who looks after Installation and Pro Audio Sales. For many years, in Denmark, the clubs have been lacking money, so they havent spent a lot. But then a year or so ago, a few of our customers wanted to make something extraordinary. And we made a club in Vejle, which is south of rhus, and at the beginning of this year we made Club Black in Herning. The owner out there called me up and said, I want to do something thats not been seen in Denmark before. He came here to our showroom for inspiration, and I went out there to give him some inspiration, and we were starting to get into
the right path. But I could see that he was not completely satised, it had to be a bit more extraordinary, explains Birch. Achieving the extraordinary meant relying on some proven nightclub products and adding some less typical xtures to the installation. The club is split into various stages, sectioned by retractable fabric screens and room splitters, which offers operational exibility. The space at the rear of the club is referred to as Club Raw. Bold design touches such as collections of red re extinguishers, which hang from the walls, and a custom built Club Black motorbike, characterises the dcor. The desire for sophistication and differentiation is clear. A host of Martin Professional dynamic lighting xtures centre on each of the two danceoors. Nine Martin smartMAC moving head proles, six Martin Mania SCX600 scanners, two Martin Atomic 3000 DMX with colours and a Martin RGB Laser 1.6 animate the main room. Further effects are provided by a Martin Jem Hydra multi-headed fog generator and a Martin Jem K1 Hazer. Control comes from Martin LightJockey. The sound system here is dominated by TC Groups product family, with Tannoy speakers, Lab.gruppen amplication and Lake processing. Two full range, 3-way VQ60 loudspeakers supply an incredible

amount of power to what is quite a small space. We wanted a deep club sound, explains Mrk. So the deep frequencies were very important. You can feel the bass. Its very important when you go to a club that you dont only hear the high frequencies, but you get the deep bass. And therefore I contacted Martin, and they said Tannoy is probably the best for your request. In answer to Mrks request, two Tannoy VS 218DR subwoofers have been specied to strengthen the bass frequencies. Capable of extending the frequency response of the system to below 30Hz, their ability to deliver deep and powerful bass at high pressure levels with extremely low distortion and power compression helped to satisfy Mrks discerning request for a full club sound. This is further appeased by six Tannoy V15, 2-way speakers, each capable of SPLs reaching 132dB. Four Lab.gruppen PLM 10000Q Powered Loudspeaker Management systems, which combine Lake processing and Lab.gruppen power, handles digital signal distribution, drive processing, power amplication, load verication and performance monitoring. Not bad for one box. In Club Raw, the sound system has been recycled, and is made up of a collection of JBL and Mach speakers, with Ecler amplication. A further nine Martin Mania SCX600 scanners have been installed here, as well as four Martin MAC 250 Krypton proles, two Martin Atomic 3000 DMX with colours and four Martin Wizard Extreme rapid moving discharge lights. A Martin Jem Hydra fog generator and a Martin Magnum 1200 smoke machine add to the atmosphere. Control again comes from Martin LightJockey. Three DJ stations have been established in Club Black; two static and one portable. Each is furnished with three of Pioneers critically

acclaimed CDJ-2000 players, amounting to a total of nine in the whole venue, with Pioneer DJM-800 mixers for each. It is further evidence of the owners commitment to investment in leading technology, and equips the club very well for special guests that the events programme regularly nds room for. Mrks vision was to create a high-class club and he has invested in the kind of equipment necessary to project such ambition. He wanted more than that though, and consulted with Birch in a bid to achieve this. After some thought, Birch put forward the idea of what could be viewed as an architectural lighting solution, for a club environment. Throughout the club, full RGB LED strips with an IP rating of 65, making them capable of withstanding the perils of spilled drinks and answering a want for sustainability, have been infused into the clubs architecture. This provides a colour-changing wash around the peripheral areas of the club, which means it can take on different guises and personalities depending on the occasion. We started thinking, not so traditionally, but in another way to how you normally do in a nightclub, reveals Birch. So we found these LED xtures, which are actually exible, but here they are mounted in a straight line. I brought it to him (Mrk) and asked: What about this one? Do you see any ideas? You can do this, blah, blah, blah. And he said: Ah, thats perfect!. I explained that it was quite expensive, but never mind. With the club environment, with water splashing everywhere, we had to nd something that could withstand this. So its actually outdoor xtures, used indoors, mainly because of this environment. Normally you would maybe buy some cheaper products and hide it under where it wont come into contact with too much water, and when its destroyed, just replace it. Its not a sustainability way of thinking. The lack of colour scheme (everything is painted black) at Club Black, in some ways makes for a technology purists dream. Almost everything that entertains the eye is created by lighting and effects, whilst the ear is kept amused by a power-punching sound system. Plans are already afoot for TC Group to supply Tannoy V15s at the back of the venue - in Club Raw - which will allow Mrk to fully realise a dream that is already an enviable reality.
