Lame product This remote control is awful, bulky and hard to fix on the car panel. Besides, when controlling an iPod with the optional module.

A Helping Hand
We show you how to make a Nokia hands-free kit and Sony CD player talk to the Minis Words: Matthew Robinson multi-function steering wheel. Photos: Paul Wager
s were sure you already know, new laws came into force in December that prohibit you from touching your mobile while youre on the move. This presents most drivers with a problem a full-on, fully integrated kit is a lot of expense, and if you change the car or phone a few months down the line you can face another big bill. So what do you do if you want to have a hands-free kit in your Mini which works without you having to take your hands off the wheel and without having holes

Youll Need

This is by no means a difficult job. Once the screws holding the centre console in place are removed, everything else is a simple plug-in upgrade, so dont panic if youre not an auto-electrician. In fact, if youve removed the Mini radio before then you should be able to do this job in under an hour. Youll need a crosshead screwdriver and also a Torx screwdriver to remove the console. A multifunction steering wheel isnt a necessity but is neater than fitting the Sony stalk however, the stalk is again a very simple fit and can be easily removed when necessary.
drilled everywhere? Simple just give Connects2 a call. The Kingswinford-based company specialises in getting aftermarket car electronics to talk to the various vehicle protocol codes in different makes of car. Its been doing kits for BMWs for some time now, and it was a natural progression to focus on the Mini. This installation is incredibly neat, as not only does it give you a plug-in hands-free phone facility, but it also uses the display on a Sony stereo to display your phonebook and call details, >

Before Starting

If youre planning on working on your car yourself, the first rule is be prepared. Goggles, gloves and a decent set of overalls should all be in your garage. Use them. If youre not completely confident in your own ability to complete any task safely, dont even start it. Leave it to the experts. Also double-check to see if what you are about to do will affect the cars warranty in any way.

GoMini 97

all controlled by the buttons provided on the Minis multifunction steering wheel. Recently, Sony has started to supply head units to Mini dealerships as an optional extra, so this is a relevant upgrade for many owners. Its a good idea to upgrade your ICE systems head unit anyway, as you can get CD, the sound quality will be better with an aftermarket unit, and the extra functions will give more flexibility with your music. The system also mutes out whichever source (CD, radio etc) you are using at the time and puts the call through the speakers, returning to your music the minute you hang up. It can also activate the system if youve got the head unit switched off when a call is made. While it is quite possible to use an HCA20 HF kit for Sony Ericsson phones, or even a CARK120 for later pop-up Nokia phones with the Sony unit, our installation used the popular Nokia CARK91 kit in conjunction with a Sony Xplod CDX-CA680X head unit and Connects2s own box of tricks, which does all the translating for the electronics. |

Stalks

Whats In The Box
If your Mini doesnt have the factory-fitted multifunction wheel, its pretty expensive to have it retro-fitted and its really not a DIY proposition. This doesnt mean you cant take advantage of this clever hands-free kit though, as Connects2 has designed its interface to work with the Sony RM-X4S joystick controller (25 approx). Offering 11 functions, it comes with a self-adhesive base which makes it easy to install anywhere you like on your steering column or dashboard.

Nokia CARK91 hands-free kit with Connects2 Sony/Nokia 300 interface kit Sony Xplod CDX-CA680X 200-250
Connects2s silver box contains all the coding necessary to talk to the BMW bus system. The unit is programmed with the information it needs to talk to factory-fit column stalks from Ford, Vauxhall, Rover, BMW, Renault and others. And if your Mini doesnt have the multifunction steering wheel, then the Connects2 interface will also work with the Sony RM-X4S stalk. The kit also contains the coding necessary for three different types of car kit, so if you change from a Nokia mobile to a Sony-Ericsson phone, all you need to change in your car is the hands-free kit phone cradle, as the Connects2 interface can be kept as it is. In simple terms, what the unit does is take the coded inputs from the Minis multifunction steering wheel, then turns that code into the equivalent commands for a Nokia phone. It then turns information from the phone into Sony code, so that it can be displayed on the head unit. Think of it as an electronic language translator, doing all communicating and giving you nothing but the plain English in return. Connects2 has calibrated the systems so that they work according to how many buttons you have on the wheel for example, the Sony RM-X4S stalk has 11 function buttons, while the Minis wheel has just six. This is achieved by using different mapping for each car/kit combination, so that you dont lose any functionality due to the lesser numbers of buttons. You get the same accessibility of functions, but they require different button selections according to the car. Finally, almost all your of phones features can be accessed and used through the wheel-mounted controls, but theres one thing the Connects2 kit wont do it has not been programmed to display SMS messages. It will tell you that you have received a message, but to read or reply to it youll have to stop, which is a welcome safety feature. Theres no point having a hands-free kit if you crash while trying to type C U l8r on the M6.

The other two screws are in the bottom of the two cupholders at the front of the console. Remove these and the silver struts should now be loose enough to allow access to the two screws which hold the factory radio in place.

98 GoMini

First job is to get the factory radio out. Start by removing the four screws at the top of the two silver upright struts.
The other ends of these silver struts are held in place by the base part of the console, which youll need to loosen in order to allow some movement of the struts. Prise out the electric mirror switch, which is held in place by two metal clips at the front edge and you can access the two screws located below it.
Remove the screws and you can simply slide out the radio, being careful not to scratch the console with the sharp edges of the metal casing. Youll find a white connector plugged into the back of it which youll need to unplug.
Push the wiring loom for the Connects2 interface up through the passenger side of the centre console, plugging one end into the back of the Sony head unit and the other into the original connector. Then slide the new unit into place. Dont worry, the plugs are designed so that they only go together the correct way.

GoMini 99

Because the Sony stereo is a standard DIN-sized unit, its slightly smaller than the non-standard Mini factory radio, so we used a plastic adapter plate from Autoleads (available from Halfords and all good car audio dealers). The silver and black style of the Sony CDX-CA680X blends in well with the Mini console, and the unit looks right at home in the car.
With the new unit installed, we mounted the Nokia phone cradle on the left-hand side of the centre console using a damage-free clip-on bracket from the Swedishmade Brodit Pro-Clip range (go to www.nemesisgb.com). These sturdy brackets are simple to install without drilling any holes, and can easily be removed when you change the car.
The microphone for the phone kit is best placed next to the clock housing in the roof. Remove the clock by simply squeezing either side of the plastic casing, easing it out with your fingernails. Feed the wire through the opening, clip the clock back into place, and run the cable back to the Nokia control box. We fed it under the headlining and then behind the rubber door seal, which can simply be pulled away to allow access.
With the hands-free kit, the Connects2 interface and the new Sony stereo all plugged in, here it is the finished article. Scroll through your names using the volume buttons on the back of the Minis steering wheel, then make a call using the source button. Theres absolutely no need to take your hands off the wheel at all during the whole process.
